(1) Lead-in (5 mins)
What does the picture mean to you
Technology is evolving fast.
Show a timeline of daily life (e.g., communication: letters → smartphones; transportation: bicycles → shared bikes). Ask:
"What has changed in people’s lives What made these changes possible "
Design Intent: Activate prior knowledge about inventions and their influence.
(2) Video Analysis: "Life then and now" (15 mins)
Activity 1: First Viewing
Play the video "Life then and now" focusing on inventions. Students note down 3 key inventions shown.
Activity 2: Discussion
Ask: "Which invention in the video has the biggest impact on your life Why "
Design Intent: Highlight the role of inventions in transforming daily life.
1 What differences between the lives of ancient people and ours do you know
1 There are many diferences. Ancient people lived in caves or simple huts(木屋), while we live in comfortable houses and buildings. They hunted animals and gathered fruits for food , but we have diferent kinds of food from supermarkets. They mainly travelled on foot, while we have cars , trains , and airplanes to travel.
2 What caused these differences
The main reason for these differences is the development of science and technology.
(3) Image Discussion: Common Inventions (15 mins)
Activity 1: Pair Work
Show images of common inventions (smartphone, compass, computer, wheel,). Students discuss:
1 What are these inventions
2 How have they changed our lives
Activity 2: Class Sharing
Volunteers present their ideas, e.g., "A smartphone helps people communicate and get information quickly."
Computers have changed the way people work and increased productivity.
The invention of the wheel made the transportation of heavy and large objects more efficient.
The compass dramatically changed the way humans travel, making long joureys and expeditions safer and easier
Design Intent: Connect inventions to students’ daily experiences.
(5) Summary (5 mins)
Summary: Review key vocabulary and the role of inventions.
Design Intent: Prepare students for the next lesson’s reading.
四. Homework(2 mins)
Review the key words, expressions, sentence patterns and grammar in today’s lesson.
Make five sentences with the grammar in today’s lesson.
五. Teaching Reflection(3 mins)
Assess if students could correctly identify key inventions from the video.
Note difficulties in comparing past and present lifestyles (e.g., limited vocabulary).
Evaluate whether the word cloud effectively helped students predict the passage theme.
