Prediction
Festivals can tell us a lot about the cultures of different countries. Watch the video and finish the following exercises.
Yi Peng Lantern Festival is celebrated in Chiang Mai, Thailand. During the festival, you can see different styles of lanterns and special parades around Chiang Mai. On the evening of the full moon in the 12th Thai lunar month, people light hundreds of paper lanterns and launch them into the air. This is a way to let bad memories go and make a wish for the future.
In Sweden, the winters are long and cold. There are only six hours of daylight in Stockholm, its capital city, and 24 hours of darkness further north. As a result, the Swedish people like summers very much and celebrate Midsummer’s Day. This festival is traditionally held on the Saturday between 20th and 26th of June. People hold parties, singing and dancing around a midsummer pole traditionally called a “maypole”.
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday which lasts for three days, beginning on 31 October and ending on 2 November. Throughout the country and beyond, people take some time to remember loved ones who are no longer alive. Traditions include visiting graves with flowers and gifts for the dead, eating sweet bread, and telling stories about dead family members or friends. Believe it or not, the Day of the Dead is not a sad festival. Many Mexicans sing and dance at this festival, believing that the souls of the dead return every year to visit their loved ones.
