辨析invent/discover/find/find out
(1)invent意为“发明,创造”,主要指“通过想象,研究,劳动等创造出前所未有的东西”,尤指“科技上的创造发明”。
(2)discover指发现或偶然发现本身就存在但未被认识的事物。
(3)find强调找的结果,即“找到”,通常指偶然发现。
(4)find out指经过观察、调查,把某事物搞清楚,弄明白。

Step 5 问题探究 (8分钟)
1.被动语态主要在下面几种情况中使用:
(1)不知道或没有必要说明动作的执行者是谁时。
如:Such books are written for children.这些书是为儿童写的。
(2)强调动作的承受者(这时可带由by引起的短语)。
如:The book was written by Mo Yan.这本书是莫言写的。
(3)出于礼貌等方面的考虑不愿说出动作的执行者是谁。
如:He was asked to give a talk about how to learn English well.他被要求做一个如何学好英语的演讲。
2.被动语态的注意事项:
(1)“主语+连系动词+表语”的句子没有被动语态。
(2)there be结构没有被动语态。
(3)主动句中宾语是反身代词的没有被动语态。
(4)句子是主谓结构时,没有被动语态。也就是说,不及物动词没有被动语态。
(5)有些不及物动词加介词构成及物动词短语,如果变被动语态,不能把动词后的介词丢掉。
如:He looks after his younger sister.→His younger sister is looked after by him.他照看他妹妹。
(6)在主动语态中,在make,hear,see,watch,notice等词后跟省略to的动词不定式,但在被动语态中,to不可省略。
如:We saw a stranger enter the hall.→A stranger was seen to enter the hall by us.我看一个陌生人进入了大厅。

(1)辨析happen和take place
①happen常指具体事件的发生,特别指那些偶然的或未能预见的“发生”。
如:The earthquake happened suddenly.地震突然发生了。
②take place通常指“(某事)按计划进行或按计划发生”。
如:Great changes have taken place in China.中国发生了翻天覆地的变化。
take place还有“举行”之意(本课即是如此)。
如:The meeting will take place next Friday.会议将在下周五举行。
(2)smell的用法
可以作名词,也可以作系动词。常见的这类词有look,sound,feel,taste等,后接名词或形容词作表语,感官动词作系动词使用时是没有被动语态的。
