Shared Mobility: Making Travel Easier for All
Shared mobility services, such as carshares and bikeshares, have positive effects on the
environment. However, access to these services is not equal for everyone. Research shows
that shared mobility services are more commonly available in wealthier urban areas. Most
users tend to be younger, wealthier, and physically able. To build a sustainable transportation
system, it is essential to make these services inclusive for all people.
Some cities have introduced programs to support low-income residents. These programs help increase the use of shared vehicles and reduce dependence on personal cars. Recently, about 70% of micromobility programs in the US have taken measures to better serve disadvantaged groups, such as accepting cash payments and offering non-smartphone booking options.
Still, many barriers remain. Surveys indicate that people in rural areas and those with lower incomes encounter more obstacles when trying to use bikeshares. Cost, lack of familiarity, and limited availability are common problems, as illustrated in the Figure.
Non-profit organizations are also playing an important role. For example, Shared Mobility Inc., a Buffalo-based NGO, provides free e-bikes to underserved communities and organizes training sessions to promote cycling culture and safety. Mobitwin in Belgium supports elderly people and those with limited mobility by providing affordable rides booked via telephone. Similarly, Tim Carsharing in Austria offers vehicles suitable for wheelchairs and provides child seats upon request.
In conclusion, understanding different needs and making services more adaptable are key steps toward fair and sustainable urban transportation.

On a recent weekday, I sent an Instagram message to a friend of mine, an art adviser in New York named Stephen Truax, to chat about an exhibition. Instead of messaging me back in the app, he texted me to say that he'd blocked Instagram on his smartphone during daytime working hours.
Impressed, I asked him how he was accomplishing such a feat. Truax said he was using Opal, an app that makes your smartphone a little more like a so-called dumbphone(功能机). He said that several of his friends swore by the app, and so he had begun using it, too. I took this word of mouth as evidence that it might actually work. I downloaded it without any particular optimism, considering my phone addiction an incurable case.
Opal, I found, provides something like gentle parenting for your smartphone habits: you set up a daily schedule of which apps to block, and then the app guides you into sticking with it. As the app suggested, I set up a recurring “Work Time” block from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. and selected every social app I ever use. At the scheduled time, those apps go gray on my home screen and remain that way all day.
Every time I'm frustrated that I can't look at Instagram on my phone, I just think, surely I, a human adult, can wait a few more hours to see my friends' dog photos—5 P.M. isn't that far away. Crucially, Opal also allows users to suspend the block for short periods of time without feeling like failures; when the scheduled break time elapses, the blockage automatically continues.
I find comfort in the fact that my mind feels clearer after a full workday without scrolling social media, and an added bonus is that once the block ends I can mainline all the good posts that I missed. As Truax told me, “The flood of content that happens after dinner is wild.” The addiction is not cured, perhaps, but at least it's finally managed.

Clothing, water bottles, takeout containers, cutting boards—it's challenging to keep up with the growing number of items that expose us to tiny plastic particles. Now some tea bags have joined the list. In a 2024 study, scientists found that brewing(冲泡) tea with a tea bag made from the plastic polypropylene(聚丙烯) released about 1.2 billion small pieces of plastic per milliliter of tea.
Tea bags are made from various types of materials, including paper, flexible plastics and a new kind of material called biodegradable plastics. Tea bags made from paper will theoretically shed fewer microplastics when compared with plastic versions, said Hailey E. Hampson, a postdoctoral fellow who studies microplastics. But it's not always easy to figure out what your tea bag was made from.
Of the 12 tea companies we contacted for this article, six responded. They all said that their tea bags were free of microplastics, mainly because they were made from paper or other plant-based materials. However, even paper tea bags aren't guaranteed to be plastic-free, Dr. Hampson said. Some may be sealed(密封) with flexible plastics like polypropylene, or have a plastic coating on the string.
Microplastics can enter our blood and tissues from the food we eat and the air we breathe. But figuring out if those exposures harm health has been challenging. Scientists have found potential links between microplastic exposures and health conditions like cardiovascular(心血管的) disease and cancer. But these studies have limitations, and it's unclear if the microplastics themselves caused these health effects.
Dr. Hampson said, briefly putting your tea bag in room temperature water, then discarding that water before brewing, can help reduce the microplastics in your tea. Placing the bag under running water might help remove some plastics, too. Just be aware that this method might extract some of the flavor from your tea. What's more, choose the right tea. Drinking loose-leaf tea is probably the best way to limit your exposure to microplastics.

Not long ago, you had to physically hand over cash to buy something. You witnessed it exit your wallet. You sensed it. But with payment services Klarna or Clearpay, you can now pay for a new phone in three instalments(分期付款) and barely notice the difference. This isn't just a shopping habit; it's a reflection of how we relate to money today. We are becoming increasingly free of the emotional burden of spending. Additionally, our mental health is being profoundly affected by this quiet shift.
The popularity of Buy Now, Pay Later(BNPL) plans has skyrocketed. They promise freedom and flexibility, but the ease of use can trick our minds. When payment is divided into smaller payments, we are wired to feel less emotionally drained. Although the £15 payments seem insignificant, they quickly add up. Psychologists found that when the act of paying is separated from the act of purchasing, we experience less “pain of paying”, which makes us more likely to overspend. In societies where digital credit is easily accessible but financial education is limited, this behaviour can fall into lasting debt. Stress over money doesn't stay in the bank. It follows us into our homes, our relationships, and even our sleep. Research from multiple countries has shown that personal debt is strongly associated with depression, anxiety, and even suicide(自杀).
That's why we need to talk about money more often—not just how to make it, but how we feel about it—in families, schools, workplaces, and therapy rooms. Therapists should be able to ask about financial stress with confidence. Financial education ought to be treated as essential in schools. Additionally, we should normalize debt-related conversations to relieve people's feelings of isolation and shame. Financial stress can make you feel helpless. But by addressing the emotional side of money and building healthier habits, we can move from crisis to confidence.
We live in a world where money is invisible. But the emotional burden it takes is very real. If we start noticing that cost, we might finally treat money not only as a resource, but as something deeply psychological.

In the debate over whether housework is a distraction or a lesson for life, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In the debate over whether housework is a distraction or a lesson for life, I firmly believe that engaging in housework is not a waste of time but an essential lesson for life.
First and foremost, doing housework helps develop crucial life skills. Tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and organizing not only teach us self-reliance but also instill a sense of responsibility. Moreover, housework fosters time-management abilities. By balancing academic duties with household chores, we learn to prioritize tasks and use our time efficiently.
In conclusion, housework is a meaningful practice that equips us with practical skills and prepares us for future challenges. Embracing it is undoubtedly a step toward becoming well-rounded individuals.
In the debate over whether housework is a distraction or a lesson for life, I lean towards the view that housework can be a distraction.
For us students who are already burdened with mountains of homework and engaged in various activities, the time occupied by housework means that we have less opportunity to delve into knowledge, expand horizons or participate in meaningful social events. It is as if the time for our personal growth and enrichment is being gradually eroded by the never-ending cycle of household chores.
In a nutshell, although housework is an unavoidable part of daily life, it does often act as a distraction that hinders us from fully focusing on and enjoying other more fulfilling aspects of life.

With every step I took, my legs shook like a baby deer's, their power gone after climbing the rocky path for hours. My mind was full of bad thoughts. You are too heavy and weak and silly for even trying this impossible climb. The worries had begun long before when I first joined this trip, back when I was still happy about six months without drinking. My advisor had said this might be too hard, but I wanted to show I could change my life.
Now, standing on this dangerous mountain side, all that hope seemed foolish. The thin air made breathing difficult, and my uncomfortable shoes already hurt my feet. I watched jealously as the other twenty-eight climbers, mostly skilled walkers much younger than me, moved up the path easily. Their happy calls to each other only made me feel more alone.
During our first break, one leader quietly talked to me. “Your bag is too heavy,” he said, looking at my full backpack. But it wasn't just the bag's weight slowing me down. It was years of mistakes, broken words, and lost friendships that I'd stupidly thought I could forget at the mountain's bottom.
As night came at camp, I stayed awake hearing the others sleep, my body hurting from tiredness. The freezing cold made my old knee problem worse, and whenever I tried to rest, I imagined falling down the rocky hill. Now, just an hour into the final climb, my eyes couldn't see clearly from tiredness and held-back tears. The leader watched me, looking worried, but I couldn't face him.
Sarah, the trip planner, appeared like a dream in the early morning darkness. When I weakly said I wanted to stop, she didn't answer right away. Instead, she looked at me carefully, making me want to disappear. Finally, she spoke, her voice clear over the loud wind: “The man who wrote to me months ago spoke about making life better on his own. Is that man really giving up now?” Her question hit me hard.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Sarah's words echoed in my mind as I forced myself to take another step.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I finally reached the summit, the rising sun painted the sky gold. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sarah’s words echoed in my mind as I forced myself to take another step. The cold wind cut through my clothes, but her belief in me warmed my heart. I focused on putting one foot in front of the other, counting each movement. With each movement, my confidence grew. Though my legs still ached, the pain became my motivation. The guide beside me nodded approvingly when I passed the next resting spot without stopping. Looking up at the winding path ahead, I realized the summit was closer than I thought.
When I finally reached the summit, the rising sun painted the sky gold. Tears filled my eyes as I looked at the incredible view—clouds floating below us like a white ocean. Sarah came over and put a hand on my shoulder. “I knew you could do it,” she said simply. At that moment, I understood something important. The mountain hadn't changed; I had. As we took group photos, smiling with windburned faces, I realized this journey wasn't just about climbing a mountain. It was about learning that our greatest limitations are often the ones we place on ourselves.
