Nowadays everyone seems to think that they know English. Many people speak it but few speak
it really well. Practice is necessary in speaking English well.
Reading is also one of the things that will help you to speak English better. Read whenever you
can and whatever you like! Read papers and Internet sites that you like in English every day. Then,
you will see that the number of known words is increasing and you are able to speak with more
skills. Then you will have made the foundations and a good basis of English. It is not good to stop or
get stuck there.
Going to England or an English-speaking country is a good choice, but many people cannot
afford it. If you cannot go, reading and speaking with your friends will also help you to practice your
English. However, I think it is very good to visit some English-speaking country to see and test your
knowledge in everyday life. You will understand the everyday usage of the language in its natural
environment. There your level of English is going to improve even faster. Your ability to speak
English is better. Nothing can match the excitement and happiness when a native speaker tells you
that your English is very good!
Finally, in order to speak English well, you must be persistent and do it every day. It is like
playing the piano. Pianists play it every day and so should you. Include English in your life and you
will see where it is going. Practice, practice! Read, write and improve your language skills and you
are on your way when you will be able to speak it with more and more confidence!
24. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. How to Improve Your Language Skills
B. Speaking English
C. How to Speak English Well
D. Practice, Practice!
25. What does the writer suggest about the reading
A. Trying to improve your vocabulary.
B. Keeping on reading when you have time.
C. Stopping when you have a good basis of English.
D. Looking up every unknown word when reading.
26. The main idea of the last paragraph is that ______.
A. We should play the piano every day
B. Speaking English is fun and entertaining
C. If we’ve learned to read and write, we’ll certainly be able to speak
D. We should practice English every day to improve our speaking skills
27. According to the passage, what may make the author excited
A. Reading papers and Internet sites.
B. Having a good basis of English.
C. Going to an English-speaking country.
D. A native speaker’s praise.
C
In my ninth-grade writing class last year,I met a cowboy who saved his town,a strict father
who demanded his son earn straight A’s,and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her
parents rejected the love of her young life.More than once,I found myself wondering just how my
students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question: “Why is writing
important?” Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be
interpreted as a thesis(论点 ) statement.I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the
question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing,in and of
itself, simply didn’t strike them as important. This would have to change.
As a new unit started,I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of
their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments,
a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop,I only required that the piece meet
the specifications of its genre(体裁 ) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The
students took on diverse topics and turned in stories,10 to 20 pages each, with characters that
broadened my view and touched my heart.
I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However,
my students demonstrated something more important to me.When the final bell rang in June, I
walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance—the
ability to connect people,to put us in another’s skin,to teach us what it means to be human.
28. Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 1
A. Ninth graders. B. Students’ parents.
C. Modern writers. D. Fictional characters.
29. Why did the students perform poorly in writing their first essay
A. They were not given enough time.
B. They had a very limited vocabulary.
C. They misunderstood the question.
D. They had little interest in the topic.
30. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Mixed. B. Amazing. C. Similar. D. Disturbing.
31. What does the author’s experience show
A. Teaching is learning. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Practice makes perfect.
D
In the first half of the twentieth century,Karl von Frisch, a scientist who studied animal
behavior, changed our impression of honey bees by discovering the “waggle(摇摆) dance”,which
may not be considered as a language , but a form of communication. It was one of our first
understandings that bees do something like what we call “thinking”.
Clint Perry,a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent much time studying how
bees think. He gave bees a choice between landing on a place above a black bar(横木 ) or a place
below it.If they landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the place
below the black bar, they found a terrible drink. He made the test harder or easier by moving the
landing places farther from or closer to the black bar.But bees also had the choice of avoiding the
task if they weren’t sure they would succeed.Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was
difficult and gave it a try when it was easy.
Perry pointed out that we can’t know for sure from tests like this whether bees are actually
judging by their own knowledge or simply quitting the task because of an unhappy connection with
the terrible drink.
Scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. No one is
suggesting that bees are as smart as humans,at least not when it comes to things like memory and
language. But learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our
own brains deal with information.
We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world. There are a lot of small
creatures flying around in the garden.Who knows what those tiny minds might be able to do
32. Why does the author mention Karl von Frisch in the first paragraph
A. To introduce a famous scientist.
B. To change the impression of bees.
C. To show early study of bees’ thinking
D. To stress the importance of bees’ study
33. How did Clint Perry make the task difficult
A. By setting more choices.
B. By giving challenging orders.
C.By making landing places farther.D.By reducing the sweet level of the drinks.
34. What is Clint Perry's attitude to the result of the research
A. Supportive. B.Uncaring C.Doubtful. D.Uncertain.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Insects’ thinking ability will improve.
C.Study on insects’ brains has a long way to go.
B. The number of small insects will increase.
D.Insects’ life habits will be a focus of research.

13.【答案】B
【听力原文】M: So let go over the key points again. First clothes. You need to make sure you wear the right kind
of uniform. Perhaps your suit is perfect for a graduation ceremony, but is it the right one for work Select the
clothes that match the look you want. If you need to buy some new clothes then get used to wearing them for at
least two days so that you don’t feel too awkward or self conscious. It’s okay if they are not brand new, but it’s not
if they limit your performance. Next remember, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
Walk in confidently and look as if you really want the job. When you sit down, sit up straight, keep your hands
open and relaxed on your lap, don’t cross your arms or legs. However, a good first impression is not enough. You
need to be smart when answering questions. If asked about the reason for quitting your last job, never criticize your
past employers or bosses. It’s the kiss of death. Try to answer from a perspective like your personal development.
It’ll show that you have matured and are ready to learn.

the campus store. Don’t worry about the price — club members get 30% off. Plus, you can enjoy special meal rates
at the school canteen.
M: Cool. How about practice times
W: Mainly on weekends. Most sessions are at the East Gym — you can take bus No.5. If practice ends after 8 p.m.,
we cover your taxi fare.

65.【答案】Hi Coward,
I’m sorry to know that you have trouble adapting yourself to senior high school. However, the situation is easy
to change if you take my suggestions into consideration.
First of all, why not communicate with your teacher face to face By doing this, your teacher will know your
inner thoughts and help you solve this problem. What’s more, if I were you, I would be engaged in various kinds of
activities held by class actively. More importantly, it would be a good idea if you made some friends with common
interests. If you do this, you can share happiness and sadness with them and help you get to know them to get rid of
loneliness at high school.
I hope you will find these ideas useful, and fit in well with your new school. Look forward to your early reply.
