Task 2: Read the following two passages, and finish the related exercises.
Victor Hugo once said, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” Up to now, nobody has been able to create laughter like Charlie Chaplin. He brightened the lives of millions through two world wars and the hard years in between. He made people laugh at a time when they felt depressed, so they could forget their difficulties.
Not that Charlie’s own life was easy. He was born to a poor family in 1889. His parents were both poor music hall performers. To make money, Charlie learnt to sing as soon as he could speak, and dance as soon as he could walk. Such training was common in stage families at that time. Every member of the family performed to help make money. Then his father died, and Charlie found the door of happiness closed to him. Despite all the challenges, Charlie struggled to his feet like an iron man and spent his youth looking after his sick mother and his brother. By his teens, Charlie had, through his humor, become one of the most popular child actors in England. No one was bored watching him—he made everything funny.
As time went by, Chaplin began making silent films, where the story was told only through body language and gestures. Usually, Chaplin appeared in these films as the Little Tramp, a poor man with a moustache, large trousers, worn-out shoes, and a small, round hat. He walked around stiffly with a walking stick as if he held a magic wand that always has the capability of turning sadness into joy. Even though the Little Tramp was considered a failure in life, he was still full of kindness and hope. Chaplin once said, “As an actor, my pain may be the reason for somebody’s laugh. But as a friend in life, my laugh must never be the reason for somebody’s pain.” He also said, “The process where we pursue happiness is like the journey where a ship sails, only buffeted its way through the wind and waves, can the ship witnesses the sunrise tomorrow!”
Charlie Chaplin wrote, directed, and produced the films he starred in. In 1972, he was given a special Academy Award, which became known as an Oscar in later years, for his contributions to the film industry. He lived in England and the USA, but spent his last years in Switzerland, where he died in 1977. The spirit he left to us is like the light in the window that tells others there is a caring and sharing person inside.

Sammie, 14, knows there’s nothing worse than feeling left out. For years, she’s been helping kids who feel lonely make friends. What she was doing was running the Buddy Bench program. She started it when she was in the third grade, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The idea was that anyone at school who was feeling lonely could sit on the “buddy bench.” The idea quickly caught on. The bench brought kids together. Since then, Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches.
Sammie got the idea for the Buddy Bench program at summer camp in 2017. She thought it would be cool to have a buddy bench in her school, so when she got home, she presented the idea to her principal, her teachers, and her parents.
Getting approval for the project was just the first step. However, it wasn’t too long before he met with a lot of small challenges, like money,” Sammie says. To reduce costs and be eco-friendly, Sammie burst into an idea that he could make the bench out of recycled material. So she rallied her community to gather bottle caps. Sammie received encouraging responses. With people working together in an orderly way, she soon collected more than 1,200 pounds of bottle caps.
Sammie says the effort has helped her overcome personal challenges. “I used to be really, really shy,” she says. “I’m definitely more outgoing now.” She has also learned to acknowledge her limits, and to take breaks when working on a big project.
“You don’t have to be an adult to make a difference,” she says. Even small acts of kindness can be powerful. “It can make someone’s day and lead to a chain reaction,” she adds. “You never know. Just be kind, in general.”
① Why did Sammie start the Buddy Bench program
A.She desired to make friends. B.She felt lonely since childhood.
C.She sought to show her kindness. D.She wanted to help lonely children.
② How did Sammie overcome the financial challenge
A.By getting approval from adults. B.By collecting waste materials.

④ Which of the following may Sammie agree with
A.Never too old to learn. B.Every coin has two sides.
C.Roses given, fragrance in hand. D.Time and tide wait for no man.
Task 3: writing task in groups
Group work: can you write 3-4 sentences to describe a hero in your eyes, using some writing technique you learned. Then share your work with other classmates. Some examples are given below:
Sammie is as warm as a sunshine, doing everything in her power to make lonely heart warm
The buddy bench is like a bridge that connects lonely hearts together
