A delicate world
Learning Objectives
By the end of the class, you will be able to:
find out what happened to Macquarie Island;
use mind maps and tables to present humans’ actions, purposes and the results;
talk about how similar situations can be avoided in the future.

_______( Native inhabitant / Non-native species) introduced to Macquarie Island ______( helped / attacked ) native birds, and led to a __________( subtle / substantial) reduction of bird population and even the extinction(灭绝) of parakeets. In addition, non-native species ate and devastated(摧毁) the native vegetation. All of this played a part in ____ ___________( upsetting /cheering ) the natural harmony of the island. But now the island’s ecology(生态) is on the road to _________ ( destruction / recovery) with human efforts.
Task 1:Read the passage quickly and find out what happened to Macquarie Island.
Activity 2 Fast Reading
Non-native species introduced to Macquarie Island attacked native birds, and led to a substantial reduction of bird population and even the extinction(灭绝) of parakeets. In addition, non-native species ate and devastated(毁灭) the native vegetation. All of this played a part in upsetting the natural harmony of the island. But now the island’s ecology(生态)is on the road to recovery with human efforts.
Activity 2 Fast Reading
Let’s read it together.
Part 1 Para 1: the chaos caused by the invading species on Macquarie Island
Part 2 Paras 2-3: the conservation of Macquarie Island
Part 3 Paras 4-6: a brief introduction to Macquarie Island
Task 2: Read the passage quickly and match the main idea of each part.

1.Who do you think is responsible for the chaos on Macquarie Island, and why
humans’ careless behaviors
humans’ improper measures
Since it is we humans that are to blame for the ecological problem with the island, we must shoulder the responsibility to make efforts to recover the ecology of it.
Activity 4 Post Reading
2. From this story, do you know how similar situations can be avoided in the future Discuss in groups and share your ideas.
Raise the awareness of protecting the natural ecosystem.
Be aware of the potential impact that human activities can have on ecosystems.
Avoid unnecessary huaman intervention.
Think twice before action when tackling problems.
Maintain the balance between humans and nature.

Activity 4 Post Reading
Macquarie Island takes on a long, thin shape,1. is because of strong
winds and 2. (storm) seas. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its native
inhabitants existed in perfect harmony with their natural habitat for thousands of
years. In 1810, humans arrived on the island with rats and mice unknowingly.
These animals quickly took over the island, 3. (bring) disasters to birds. Unfortunately cats intended to control rats and mice 4. an appetite
for birds, too. Later, rabbits 5. (introduce) but they led to greater
damage to the island. Experts came up with a plan to release a virus 6. (kill)
the rabbits, but afterwards, they developed an immunity 7. the virus, and their
8. (number) exploded once again. This incident made 9. clear that the
rat, mouse and rabbit problem needed solving once and for all. I am here to tackle
this problem. I brought trained dogs to remove the last 10. (remain)
invading species. I hope we humans owe it to the island to give it a happy ending.
