My sister Kimberly and I build our own spacecraft (航天器) and launch (发射) them. We started our spacecraft project as a family three years ago, with our mom and dad. Making the spacecraft was the biggest part. We brain-stormed ideas together, designed (设计) it, bought the materials, and then built it ourselves. So far, we’ve done three launches.
It’s fun to learn. But building and launching a spacecraft is a lot of work. We have to do everything by a certain time, plan it, and test everything. We can’t expect someone else to fix problems that come up. We have to fix them ourselves.
In 2016, we were invited to the White House Science Fair to present our project to President Obama! We got the call the day before April Fool’s Day, so we thought it was a joke. We were so excited when we later realized it wasn’t. When we got to the State Dining Room, a lot of people wanted to take photos with us. Then a ton of cameras were set up. Reporters started interviewing us, and then President Obama walked in. We were nervous as we waited our turn to talk to him. But when he spoke with us, our nervousness faded. He was really nice. We shook his hand, and he asked a lot of questions about how the spacecraft worked.
Sometimes people have doubted that we two girls had the power to do all this on our own. But a project like this is not about how old you are; it’s about how much hard work you put into it. This is what we want to tell girls: Science is something we can all get into. And it’s fun!

How has technology changed our lives for the better TIME will tell you! The magazine has picked its 100 best inventions of 2021. Here we present you some of the most creative examples.
The Learning Passport
Many schools have closed their doors since the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠疫情) broke out. Home school has been difficult for some students because of slow internet service. To make matters worse, some students don’t even have an internet connection at home. The Learning Passport has a solution. The project offers browser-or-app-based (基于浏览器或手机应用的) classes. These classes do not require a consistent (持续的) internet connection. Instead, students download their lessons when there is internet connection. They can then complete the lessons later, offline.
Blue Jeans Go Green
Jeans are a fashion favorite. Every year more than 4.5 billion pairs are sold around the world. But the production of jeans is harmful to the environment. To color them, factories use synthetic indigo dye (合成靛青染料). During the process, the chemicals in the dye cause water to become polluted. Bio-technology company Huue has created bacteria (细菌) that can turn natural sugars into indigo dye—without having any negative environmental impacts.
Battery Swapping for EVs
Electric-vehicles(EV) are popular these days. However, they still face a major problem: they can take several hours to charge (充电). This is inconvenient for many drivers. One answer to this problem lies in battery-swapping (电池替换). When an EV pulls into one of these battery-swapping stations, its depleted (耗尽的) battery is removed, and a full charged one replaces it. American company Ample has designed a universal battery. It works with all types of EVs.

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said “the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone, which makes me unusual. Anyway, the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1
The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to her classmates or friends at school. If the phone didn’t appear, would she have anything to talk about
Point 2
The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life.” says a woman who once had an accident in her car. Trapped inside, she managed to call the ambulance (救护车) to save her.
Point 3
The mobile takes away our private time. It allows the marketing manager of any company to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4
The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says. “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near — but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”
Point 5
The telephone allows us to reach out beyond(超越) our own lives. Today we can talk to several strangers at the same time on chat lines (At least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). Actually, we can talk across the world. And, with the phone, we can also surf the Internet.
(1). What does point 1 try to tell us
A.People communicate less because of the creating of the telephone.
B.People communicate more since telephone has been created.
C.People communicate more because of more traffic.
(2). Which points show that telephones have improved people’s life
a. Point 1. b. Point 2. c. Point 3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5.
A.b, c B.a, d C.b, e
(3). In the writer’s opinion, we can know that ________.
A.people in separate offices can be friends with the help of mobile phones
B.the telephone is changing our lives like other pieces of technology
C.people can talk to some strangers at the same time through the phone
(4). Which of the following best shows the writer’s opinion towards mobile phones
A.Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.
B.Mobile phones make life easier while leave little secret to people.
C.Mobile phones help people deal with the things that happen suddenly.
(5). What’s the best title for this passage
A.Phone Power
B.How to Use Phones
C.Advantages of Phones
