How can you do calculations (计算) quickly These days, you can easily use a calculator.
But how about people in ancient times In the very beginning, the cleverest among them thought of using stones and seashells. Then, around the 2nd century B. C. , they invented the abacus. Some researchers consider the invention to be the world’s oldest “calculator”. In China, people used abacuses to do calculations for thousands of years.
The abacus is usually made of wood.It has many beads (珠子). Each rod (竿)stands for a different digit (数位). The rightmost is ones, the second is tens, the third is hundreds, and so on. Each bead in the central area has a value.
In the past, the use of the abacus was taught in all schools. It was considered to be an important skill that everybody needed to pick up. Wherever there was a need for calculations, an abacus would come into sight.
Today, abacuses are no longer widely used. Perhaps you have never seen one. However, we can still feel the important roles they once played. Abacuses have become a symbol. Think about what is happening in many families: kids come home, throw away their schoolbags, jump onto the sofa, get lost in the world of the small screen and become couch potatoes. Kids are crazy about screens and games, suffer from shortsightedness and become lazy thinkers. Now, parents need to take responsibility for family education to help shape the future for their children.
On Jan l, the Law on Family Education Promotion(《家庭教育促进法》)), the first of its kind in China, came into effect. It was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on Oct 23, 2021. The law says that parents or other guardians of minors(未成年人的监护人)should be responsible for family education. They are encouraged to educate their children properly-- morally(道德上), physically and psychologically(心理上).
According to the law, parents and guardians mustn’t place too much pressure(压力)on their children. Parents and guardians should carefully organize time for minors to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure minors don’t become addicted to the Internet,
The law also says that parents or other guardians should not use violence(暴力) to control their children. They should not discriminate(歧视)against youth according to their gender or physical condition. For example, some parents might value boys more than girls or discriminate against disabled children.
The law also gives special mention to stay-at-home children in the countryside. They may be left alone while their parents go to work in cities. It asks local governments to keep a close eye on such families, and help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be responsible for their children’s education.
"Family education is very important for the future of the country, " says Sun Hongyan, head of youth and children research at the China Youth and Children Research Center. "Now, with the introduction of the new law, family education is no longer just a family matter but a state affair (事务). "
When parents fail to educate their children properly, they might be breaking the law. Although punishment and detention(拘留)for parents were dropped from the final version of the law, they will be given a warning.
4. What does the first paragraph try to show
A. Family education is not a problem in China.
B. Parents should be children’s direct guardians.
C. It’s terrible for children to be crazy about games.
D. The facts make it necessary to carry out the law.
5. Which of the following are mentioned in the new law
a. Parents shouldn’t beat their children.
b. Parents shouldn’t get addicted to the Internet.
c. Parents shouldn’t organize time for minors to relax.
d. Parents shouldn’t treat their daughters or sons differently.
e. Parents shouldn’t place too much pressure on their children.
A. abc B. abd C. ade D. ace
6. According to the law, we know that the government should try to ________.
A. offer jobs for local workers in local areas
B. help local children left alone go to school
C. ask local workers to take their children with them
D. stop local workers from leaving their home town
7. What may happen to parents if they break the law
A. They may be warned. B. They may get arrested.
C. They may get punished. D. They may be separated.

Great work is work that makes a difference in people’s lives, writes David Sturt, Executive Vice President of the O. C. Tanner Institute, in his book Great Work: How to Make a Difference People Love. Sturt insists, however, that great work is not just for surgeons or special - needs educators or the founders of organizations trying to eliminate poverty(贫穷)in sub - Saharan Africa. The central theme of Great Work, according to Sturt, is that anyone can make a difference in any job. It’s not the nature of the job, but what you do with the job that matters. To prove this, Sturt tells the story of an excellent hospital cleaner named Moses.
In a building filled with doctors and nurses doing great life—saving work, Moses the cleaner makes a difference. Whenever he enters a room, especially a room with a sick child, he impresses both patients and parents with his optimism(乐观)and calm, introducing himself to the child and,Start writes, speaking “some words about light and sunshine and making things clean.”He praises on any progress he sees day by day (“you’re sitting up today, that’s good.”) Moses is no doctor and doesn’t sit pretend(假装)to be, but he has witnessed hundreds of sick children getting well from painful surgery, and parents take comfort from his encouraging words. For Matt and Mindi, whose son McKay was born with only half of a heart, Moses became a close friend. As Sturt explains, “Moses took his born talents (his sensitivity) and his practical wisdom (from years of hospital experience) and brought them into a powerful form of patient and family support that changed the critical—care experience for Mindi, Matt and little McKay.”
How do people like Moses do great work when so many people just work That was the central question raised by Sturt and his team at the O. C. Tanner Institute, a consulting(咨询)company specialized(专营)in worker recognition(认可)and rewards system.
O. C. Tanner carried out a complete Great Work study that included surveys to 200 senior executives(高管), a further set of surveys to 1, 000 managers and workers working on projects, a study of 1. 7 million accounts of award - winning work (in the form of nominations for awards from corporations(公司) around the world), and one - on - one interviews with 200 different makers. The corporations(公司)around the world, and one-on-one interviews with 200 different makers. The results of the study showed that those who do great work refuse to be stopped by the constraints of their jobs. They are especially able to think about their jobs without any boundaries, they don’t consider their jobs as a list of tasks and responsibilities(责任)but see their jobs as chances to make a difference. No matter, as Moses so ably exemplifies(例证), what that job may be.
8. According to Sturt, which of the following is TRUE
A. It’s not the nature of the job, but what you think that makes a difference.
B. Anyone in the world has duty to reduce poverty and change the world.
C. Anyone can make a difference in people’s lives no matter what kind of job he does.
D. Surgeons, special—needs educators and founders of organizations can succeed more easily.
9. According to this passage, how does Moses, a common hospital cleaner, make a difference in people’s lives
A. By keeping optimistic and calm when facing patients and their parents.
B. By showing his great duty and rich working experience while working.
C. By showing his pity and kindness to patients when entering their rooms.
D. By pretending to be a doctor or nurse when entering a room with the sick.
10. What can we infer from the passage
A. Great work is work that makes a difference in people’s lives.
B. Those who do great work see their jobs as chances to make a difference.
C. Moses makes a difference through his sensitivity and his practical wisdom.
D. If a boss has trouble knowing his workers well, he may ask O. C. Tanner for advice.

Did you look out of a window today Many glass factories make windows. They mix old and new glass together for this. Machines heat the sand mixture to a very high temperature. Then they pour the melted glass into a tray (托盘). This tray moves between rollers to make the glass flat. The trays make the glass into a window shape. It is slowly heated and cooled more than one time to make it stronger. It is very hot in a glass factory. People can’t work there, but machines can. Machines do much of the work in making windows because the heat does not hurt them.
A machine can also be used to make glass bottles. It melts glass and puts it into a mold in the shape of a bottle. Air goes into an opening in the bottle shape. Then the glass cools and becomes hard. The bottle must be heated and cooled again very slowly to make it stronger. If it is heated and cooled too fast, the glass will break. Glass bottles are very helpful, they are often used everywhere to hold drinks and food. They are good for storing things so that we use all of the time. As you can see, many things can be made out of glass. Next time you look out of a window or drink from a glass, think about where it came from!
1.What do glass factories use to make windows
2.How can we make the glass flat
3.Why can’t we heat or cool the bottles too fast
4.What can we use glass bottles to do
5.Try to give the passage a suitable title.

I like style A very much. I think wearing such school uniforms can make us look not only smart but also sporty. And we may feel energetic when we wear them. I like the colours as well. It’s good for boys to wear blue and black. They are a good match. They can make us feel less stressed. And red is also a good colour for girls. Red makes us feel full of energy. It can make us take actions easily.
