One of the best memories I have from my childhood is the time my mother read to me. When it was cold outside, we sat on the couch late at night with the fire blazing in the fireplace. I leaned against her shoulder and watched the lines on her face disappear as she used her voice to imitate the characters in the book.
It could have been her time to relax after taking care of children and a husband all day, but instead, she would smile when I slipped out of my bed and came tiptoeing back into the living room after everyone else was asleep. Being the youngest of 11 children, sometimes, it was easy to get lost in the crowd, and I cherished those moments; I could sit close to her and know it was just my time.
My mother’s lines would melt away during those moments because she wasn't thinking about cooking, cleaning, disciplining, or paying the bills. When she read Cinderella to me, she would make me feel the transition from ashes to riches because she was using her imagination to feel it, too.
When I became a busy parent with my children, I understood my mother’s sacrifices for sharing that late-night story time with me. But, somehow, I think she needed it as much as I did.
Years later, I had the opportunity to visit an elementary school recently to read to the first-grade class for National Children’s book week. Besides helping a child develop a love for reading, it is a beautiful way to be close to your children and instills a sense of security they never forget. It’s when the parent focuses on the child without distractions, and a child can feel that. I did. For a moment, we aren’t adults with all the answers and rules, but someone lost in a story with our children.
Reading and letting our imagination travel is not just for children, either. When I am at my busiest and feel the most stressed in my life, I find a book and let myself get lost for a
while. The difference between reading a book, hanging out on your iPad, or lounging in front of the television to relax is that when you read a book, the story can be what you imagine it to be, and you can learn as fast or as slow as you want to. I like that.
What impressed the author most
A.His mother read to him during his childhood.
Mom warmed him with the fire in the fireplace.
They sat on the couch enjoying the TV series.
He imitated the characters in the book.
What made the author have contradictory feelings
He slipped out of his bed and tiptoed to mum.
He did everything when others were asleep.
He was always lost in the crowd.
He stole mum’s time to relax but enjoyed it.
Which is the benefit of reading together according to the passage
It helps kids perform well in elementary school.
It helps kids form a sense of security.
It helps parents focus on reading without distractions.
It helps adults find answers and rules.
What is the passage mainly aimed at
Calling for kids to read more classical literature. B.Promoting the idea of parent-child reading.
C.Advertising for National Children’s book week. D.Relieving everyday stress.
C
What is your ideal garden Perhaps you’re thinking of beautiful flowers, inviting paths and insects eating the plants. While it sounds odd, insects are necessary to holistic(整体的) gardening, a gardening method that uses native plants to better our local ecosystems.
“As we think about garden design, we often start with the color palette, the amount of sunlight and the soil conditions,” says Mark Konlock, Director of Horticulture at Green Bay Botanical Gardens. “The holistic approach takes those concepts and adds another layer to provide value for insects and other parts of the ecosystem.” This begins with choosing plants that have evolved in your local conditions.
“With natives, you’re able to reduce the amount of upkeep and have plants that stand
extreme conditions, like drought or wet soils,” he explains. “Once those plants are established, you don’t have to water them, fertilize them or use pesticides.” Looking at the big picture, those benefits overflow into the environment. An example is plants that like wet soil; they can be added to a rain garden to filter ( 过滤) the groundwater and reduce runoff. And when you don’t use pesticides in the garden, you can focus on letting insects grow.
Of course, tolerating all kinds of insects takes some effort. “We’re used to avoiding insect damage in our gardens, so it takes a bit of retraining our minds to help us see the value of letting those insects eat the plants,” Mark says. Chewing insects serve as prey for other members of the ecosystem, such as birds, and in many species, those that survive the larval stage develop into pollinators ( 授粉者) that we like to see. As pollinators continue losing habitat, it becomes more vital to assist them, as they’re responsible for one-third of our food supply.
What is an advantage of holistic gardening
It can make plants more inviting. B.It can enhance local ecosystems.
C.It can popularize gardening. D.It can control the reproduction of insects.
What does the underlined word “upkeep” mean in paragraph 3
Design. B.Improvement. C.Decoration. D.Maintenance.
What do we know about native plants from the text
They are beneficial to the environment.
They are sensitive to various pesticides.
They can help to filter the drinking water.
They need more light compared to foreign plants.
What message does the last paragraph mainly convey
A.Birds are responsible for our food supply. B.Pollinators face threats of losing their habitats.
C.People should avoid insect damage in gardens.
D.Insects play an important role in the food chain.

How many different emotions do you think you can communicate to people with your face Do you have the same facial expressions as the people from different cultures Read this passage to find out what scientists have just discovered about this topic.
New research suggests that there are only four basic facial expressions of emotion. However, how these expressions are interpreted (解释) might depend on where you are from.
Research by scientists from the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Glasgow has challenged the traditional view of how the face expresses emotions. It was widely believed that six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust) were expressed and recognized across different cultures. However, the University of Glasgow’s work now suggests that the human face only has four basic expressions of emotion. This is because some pairs of emotions are impossible to distinguish( 辨别). Fear and surprise, for example, both share wide open eyes. The facial expressions for anger and disgust also look the same.
So if our faces are only able to express four basic emotions, how do we communicate a much more complex kind of feeling The study found that the way expressions are interpreted is different in different cultures. However, while looking at how people from the East and West look at different parts of the face during facial expression recognition, scientists found that although there are some common features across cultures, the six basic facial expressions of emotion are not recognized universally.
What interests people about the cross-cultural aspect of the research This work leads to understanding which emotions we share and appreciating our differences.
What did the University of Glasgow find
A.Six basic emotions greatly influence our character. B.Six basic emotions can be recognized.
C.It is easy to tell from the basic facial expressions.
D.Some of the six facial expressions are similar.
Which group may be the four basic facial expressions of emotion
Sadness, fear, anger and surprise. B.Anger, sadness, fear and happiness. C.Happiness, surprise, sadness and fear. D.Disgust, happiness, anger and sadness.
What can we learn according to Paragraph 3
Basic facial expressions are not universal.
Facial expressions can’t show complex feelings.
Western people have more kinds of facial expressions.
The way to express emotions changes with time.
Which is the proper title for the passage
What Does Your Face Say B.How Do We Communicate C.What Are the Six Basic Emotions D.Do We Have the Same Expressions

What is volunteer travel
Volunteer travel involves taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity helping others. Typically, the volunteer activity takes place in a foreign country, but some opportunities can involve national or regional projects. 36
Charitable interests often go far beyond national boundaries. People in developed countries become interested in the struggles of people in less developed countries. 37 Volunteer travel is a way to combine a visit to a new location with meaningful work that has a direct impact on communities in other parts of the world.
38 Historically, church groups made up a large part of this market. Once a year a religious organization or church would organize a trip to another country. 39 For example, it would be to help build a school in an impoverished(贫困的)area, or dig wells so a village would have clean water, or engage in hundreds of other projects that would impact those less fortunate. As international travel became easier and the Internet made communication between countries much easier, the interest in volunteer travel increased.
40 Volunteering in other countries has become as accessible as browsing a website and signing up. Instead of traveling with a group that is organized at the volunteers home base, the volunteer may join a group that gathers at the worksite from all over the world. This sort of volunteer travel is sometimes referred to as voluntourism or vacanteerism.
A.The primary purpose of the trip was very specific.
B.This type of travel has been an option for many years. C.Educational institutions also made volunteer travel an option. D.Sometimes, donating money is not enough to satisfy the need to help.
E.The Internet has helped make community service in general more popular.
F. These trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or non-profits.
G.A new trend is that for-profit tour operators arrange group travel around volunteer opportunities.

It was our first time exploring a foreign country on our own, without a tour guide
leading the way. My friend Doris and I had a week-long tour there and believed we could explore this town alone then. After breakfast, we confidently started the trip. After a full day of exciting exploration, the sky turned from clear blue to gray, with dark clouds gathering.
As we walked along the ancient street to our hotel, raindrops began falling. Everyone around us took cover. “Should we take a taxi ” I asked aloud, the rain being so loud that I had to raise my voice. “It’s only a ten-minute walk, and let’s go much faster,” Doris shouted back.
I found her explanation of directions only confused us, however hard she tried.
As the rain and wind increased, we quickened our pace. The ancient street was soon covered with deep water that quickly made our shoes totally wet. Suddenly, the big thunder sounded! Dusk had turned into total darkness, which was only interrupted by the sudden lightning from the sky. Finally, we realized we had been walking for a much longer time than it should have taken us to reach the hotel. We had taken a wrong turn somewhere. We were lost! What’s worse, both of our cell phones were powered off, so we couldn’t call for help, and the street was empty.
Shocked, we headed back down the street, wishing to find the right direction. It was still raining cats and dogs. Our clothes and bags were completely wet. Later looking out into the darkness through the shrubs ( 灌木) along the street, we realized we had come to a residential neighborhood. “Let’s just wait for a minute,” Doris said.

Years ago, I was given a task of organizing a conference in the south of England. I chose a five-star hotel owned by Rochester as the venue. Susan, the receptionist, helped me arrange everything perfectly. Once when we were chatting, I asked Susan if she’d ever met Mr. Rochester. She said “Yes.” Shortly after Mr. Rochester bought the hotel, he made an appointment to see the hotel manager, when he arrived, the first person he met was Susan who was cleaning the carpet. He chatted with Susan for 30 minutes before keeping his appointment with the manager. He spent all day at the hotel talking with each member of the staff from the top guy to the lady who cleaned the toilets. Six months later, Mr. Rochester paid another visit. Susan had been promoted to receptionist, but he recognized her immediately and addressed her by name. He even
remembered that she had a little girl and what her name was. Now I don’t believe that Richard Rochester has that good memory. He must have written a lot of notes after his first visit and read them over again before that second visit. It’s time-consuming, but it shows the importance he places on human relationships. I think that’s one of the secrets of his success.
