Modern organic(有机的)farming was developed as a response to the environmental harm caused by the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers(化肥)in conventional agriculture, and it has plenty of ecological benefits(生态效益). In other words, the idea behind organic farming is to use no chemicals. Farmers must use natural methods to make plants grow strong and protect them from insects. It is believed that without chemicals, these plants will make better food for humans. But the idea is bigger than that. Organic farming respects all plants and animals in the environment. This kind of farming should improve nature’s health.
Fertilizers are chemicals that give plants strength. If a farmer grows the same plant over and over in the same place, the soil will lose its ability to feed the plant. The farmer must add fertilize to help the soil. Organic farmers do not add fertilizer. They will rotate crops(轮作谷物)or use animal manure and plant compost(堆肥)to make the soil rich again. Compost is made from plant material that has broken down into soil. It has all the food a plant needs to grow.
Pesticides are also avoided. These are chemicals that kill pests like bad insects or animals. Organic farmers have other ways to deal with pests because pesticides kill good animals and insects that protect the plants. Foxes and snakes eat the mice. Some insects like ladybirds eat the bad insects. And of course, there are weeds(杂草). These are the plants that farmers do not want because they steal growing space from the good plants. To stop weeds, organic farmers can scrape(刮除)the soil several times. Eventually, the weeds will die.
Organic farming usually needs a lot of human labour to do the job of chemicals. This is one reason that organic food costs more. But when we think about the health of the earth, its plants, and its animals, perhaps it is worth it. In the end, a healthy planet means that we will be healthy as well.
1. From the passage we know that organic food may be ________ than inorganic food.
A. tastier B. cheaper C. more expensive D. more beautiful
2. The meaning of the underlined word “pesticides” in Paragraph l is ________.
A. a chemical used to kill insects
B. something to make soil rich again
C. the waste matter from animals
D. some materials to make plants grow
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Organic farming can make us and our earth healthy.
B. Plants with chemicals make better food for humans.
C. Soil needs all kinds of fertilizers to keep plants growing.
D. It’s wise to grow the same plant again in the same place.

It’s late fall in the Arctic (北极的) Ocean. Ice begins to form on top of the water, making it difficult for the white whales to find open areas to come up for air. “They have to come up to breathe,” says Donna Hauser, a marine biologist (海洋生物学家) at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. “That’s a more difficult job, and they have to find openings in the ice.”
The white whales know it’s time to leave for warmer waters. So the group of about a hundred white whales heads south toward the Bering Sea, a body of water separating the United States and Russia.
Halfway through their journey, the while whales find themselves swimming between two ice floes (浮冰). Suddenly, they hear a large splash (溅泼声). A white whale’s main enemy-an orca(虎鲸) — has appeared and is swimming toward the white whales. Luckily, orcas aren’t as good at swimming through ice floes as white whales are, giving the white whales time to speed up and swim away.
The white whales are safe, for now. “But before getting to their destination, they must pass through the Bering Strait connecting the Arctic Ocean with the Bering Sea-before the narrow (狭窄的) waterway freezes over,” Hauser says. “Otherwise, their path south could be blocked (阻挡).”
The white whales finally make it to the Bering Strait, which hasn’t yet frozen over. After a few more days of swimming, they arrive at the Bering Sea. The white whales will rest, hunt, and play here until April, when they’ll swim back north. There, the females will give birth to baby white whales in the spring. When ice spreads across the Arctic Ocean again, those babies will follow their families south and begin their first long journey.
4. Why do the white whales leave the Arctic Ocean
A. They need to go south to hunt.
B. They have to get enough air.
C. They want to breathe fresher air.
D. They are afraid of the cold weather.
5. What may help the white whales get away from from the orca
A. Brave fights. B. Swimming skills.
C. Large ice floes. D. Their smaller bodies.
6. What does “their destination” in the fourth paragraph refer to
A. The Bering Strait. B. The Bering Sea.
C. The Arctic Ocean. D. The United States.
7. When will the white whales leave the Bering Sea
A. In January. B. In February. C. In March. D. In April.

On a cold night in New York, a policeman was on duty. He walked along a quiet street and checked the shops that had closed for the night. Then he came upon a man outside a store. Before he could say a word, the man started talking.
“It’s all right, officer,” the man said. “I’m just waiting for a friend. We made a date to meet here. ” He explained that he and his friend had eaten dinner at this shop exactly 20 years ago. “I’ll be on my way,” the policeman said. “Hope your friend comes around all right.” He then continued walking down the street.
20 minutes later, another man showed up. “Is that you, Bob ” the man asked. “Is that you, Jimmy ” Bob responded. Bob was happy to be looking at his old friend again. However, he couldn’t help but notice that Jimmy seemed much taller. “I grew a bit after I was 20,” Jimmy said. “Hey, I know a place. It’s not far from here, and we can talk there.” Bob agreed, and they started walking.
When they stepped under the light of a shop, the two men turned to look at each other. Bob stopped suddenly and cried, “You can’t be Jimmy! Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change the size of a man’s nose. ”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one, ” said the tall man. “You have been under arrest (被捕) for the last ten minutes, Bob. Also, here’s a note from Officer Jimmy. ” Bob unfolded the piece of paper handed to him.
8. Bob explained to the police officer on duty _________.
A. why he was outside a closed store

Have you ever washed your clothes without detergent (洗涤剂) I’ve been doing this since early May. In the summer, most of my shirts and T-shirts only get dirty with sweat. So, a fast wash with pure water is all that is needed. It’s not 1 costs—detergents are not expensive. It’s all about reducing plastic pollution.
Many detergents have microplastics in them. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic. They are 2 (little) than five millimeters across. Also, washing clothes causes them to shed (脱落) tiny plastic fibers (纤维). These fibers are also a kind of microplastic. These tiny pieces of plastic end up being washed into 3 sea. 4 fish take in them, they enter the human food chain (食物链). This is bad for the environment, sea life and us humans. It’s time to make a 5 (decide) to never use detergents. It’s a matter of 6 (person) choice, but meaningful and great.
Clearly, plastic pollution will not disappear overnight. But we can choose 7 (reduce) the use of plastics slowly. We can try to reuse plastics in our daily lives. Over the past few months, people around us 8 (take) some action to help do it. Last month, a “green” market 9 (hold) in a neighborhood in Shanghai’s Jing’an District. People there brought empty, used plastic bottles to the market. They 10 (fill) their bottles with a detergent provided by a detergent producer. Such events can help reduce the need for new plastic bottles.
All in all, we can take small steps each day to help the environment. And I hope that one day, clothes made from “green” materials will become popular. This will help to further reduce plastic pollution from laundry.

If you dream of becoming a spaceman after you grow up, get started now! A spaceman needs a strong body and mind. See here what spacemen are able to do. They have many abilities that may make you amazed.
Spacemen are able to live upside down. They do this not just during sleep. They also do this when eating and going to the toilet. Before they fly into space, they have lots of practice. Each upside-down training lasts for 20 days.
Spacemen aren’t only drivers, but repairers and scientists. They have to know every part of the spaceship and how it works. If something goes wrong, they must know how to make it work again. Also, they do scientific experiments in space.
Spacemen know how to live in the wild. They take a knife, a gun and some dye (染料) with them into space. If they land in forests, the knife and the gun can protect them from wild animals. If they fall into the sea, the dye colours the water around yellow. This can help people find them easily on the sea.
Spacemen can’t get dizzy (眩晕的). A spaceship is not a plane. When it goes up, the extra gravity force can break people’s bones. Spacemen must have strong bodies for this. They can’t get a headache or be sick. With many things to take care of, they’ve got no time for sickness.

The Person Who Has Influenced Me Most
My mother is the person who has influenced me most. She is nearly forty years old and works in a local bank.
She is always the first to get up and the last to go to bed in my family. She has to do all the housework. My mother is full of love. Whenever she has some time left, she will always work as a volunteer in the hospital or visit the children who have lost their parents. She often makes every effort to help children in need.
I think my mother is the greatest person in the world and I will follow her example and help people who need help.
