四、阅读理解
On Aug 27, the Guilin Karst In Guangxi was listed in “The Second 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites” by the International Union of Geological Sciences, reported China Daily.
How does karst topography come into being 1. Rainfall: As the rain falls down, it picks up CO2 from the atmosphere, which dissolves (溶解) in the raindrops. 2. Soil: When the rain hits the ground, it picks up more CO2 into the soil, and become a weak solution of carbonic acid (碳酸溶液). 3. Limestone: The bedrock beneath the soil is made up of limestone (石灰岩), which is a soft rock that can be eroded (侵蚀) by acidic water.
4. Cracks: When the acidic water flows down the cracks from the ground, it “eats” the bedrock and the cracks become wider and wider. This allows even more acidic water to pass through.
6. Stalactites versus Stalagmites: As the acidic water seeps (渗) through the ceiling, it leaves some rocks untouched, producing stalactites (钟乳石) that hang down. As water drips to the floor, it loses CO2 creating minerals (矿物质) that build up into stalagmites (石笋). 5. Underground rivers and lakes: After the acidic water arrives underground, they continue to “eat” the bedrock, creating caves as well as underground rivers and lakes.

A.Limestone. B.Cracks. C.Soil. D.Acidic water.

Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day interest (利息).
Then a kind old lady called Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (暴力的) man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was scared of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with Douglas. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.
Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross on the heel (脚后跟) of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!
“He’s heard about my ________,” I thought. “And he wants it!”
That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. There was a spirit inside the ball that could answer people’s questions about the future.

In the story Snow White, the jealous queen decides to kill Snow White once and for all with an apple dipped in deadly poison (毒). Thanks to seven helpful dwarfs and a handsome prince, Snow White recovery one lives happily ever after.
But the queen didn’t need to go to all that trouble. In fact, apples-along with many common fruits we eat-are already poisonous! But don’t worry. The yummy fleshy part won’t harm you. It’s only the seeds you need to avoid.
Apple trees belong to a plant family called Prunus. This group also includes peaches, plums and cherries. The seeds of all these fruits carry a chemical called amygdalin. Inside an animal’s stomach, amygdalin turns into a strong poison called cyanide (氰化物). And cyanide can make people and animals very sick, or even kill them.
Still, don’t worry if you get down a few apple seeds by chance. Each seed has only a very tiny amount (数量) of poison. You’d have to eat a large bowlful of seeds to feel any influence. And you’ d need to chew (咀嚼) them well-the hard, shiny coating of apple seeds keeps the poison locked inside.
Unchewed seeds usually pass right through and come out whole in your poop. But cows and other animals often chew up seeds along with the fruit, so they can get sick from eating apples and plums that fall to the ground.
Why would a tree make poisoned seeds ________! Amygdalin tastes terrible. It’s also found in leaves and other parts of fruit trees. If a deer or cow eats apple leaves, it experiences a nasty taste and an upset stomach so animals soon learn to leave those trees alone. Thanks, amygdalin!
Want proof If you bite into an apple seed, you’ll notice an awful taste. That’s the amygdalin. The apple tree doesn’t want you to chew up its seeds. It wants you to spit them out, so they can grow into new trees. Go right ahead!
Mirror mirror, on the wall, who’s the cleverest fruit of all

③the influence of the poison is weak if you eat only a few seeds

Tips on How to Study Smarter
Having good study skills is always helpful. And it’s more important in the present situation, where online classes are growing. Students are likely to learn without a teacher or parent watching over. So you will have to manage your time and study more on your own. 56
◆Practice practice, practice! Musicians, practice their instruments. Athletes practice sports skills. 57 If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice. In one study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored better than those who studied in the normal way.
◆Test yourself. Before big tests, you may often cover up the notes, and then try to recall them. This practice can help nearly everyone. You can put questions down on one side of the paper and the answers on the other side. Try to test yourself in the way the teacher asks questions. Teachers often dig deeper. 58
◆Learn from mistakes. A secret of science: Mistakes help understanding. If you don t find out what the answer is, you’re wasting your time. Checking the answers can make your study time more efficient. 59 You can then focus on what you get wrong. In fact, mistakes are actually a primary key to learning.
◆ 60 Students know some good study skills, yet many of you don’t actually do these things. Often you fail to plan ahead. So do make plans. And try to stick to a routine, too. For example, you can have a set time and place where you do schoolwork and study. And get enough sleep — not just the night before the test but for weeks or months on end.
A.You can add more skills.
B.They don’t just ask easy questions.
C.Friends can test each other.
D.Here are some tips to develop good study skills.
E.The same should go for learning.
F.Check to see if you are right.
G.Make a plan and stick to it.

When I studied at the Overseas Family School in Singapore, we held an activity called MAD Week in early April. “MAD” stands for “music, art and drama”. It is like a kind of art festival for students to perform themselves in front of people and enjoy the magic of art.
At the beginning of MAD Week, we had to wear a hat to school. To my surprise, most of the students made creative hats by themselves. Some girls chose to work as a team and wore hats that looked like ice cream. One boy made a really tall hat that he could hardly wear! As for me, I used paper, feathers and even candies to make my hat creative.
I joined the “MAD Hat Parade”, too. Groups of students and teachers walked with their fantastic hats. It was great fun taking pictures with them, and I was so glad to have a “MAD Hat Day” like this. It’s really a good way for students to show their creative ideas and be interested in the arts.
