If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.
Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress. Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that
Let’s not forget about peer (同龄人) pressure. All high school students meet with it at some point in their lives.
High school can be a place where students are made fun of, singled out and pointed at.
My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.
I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious. That’s
exactly why I know that the focus I give to my future is important in leading me to a career that will allow me to contribute (贡献) to society.
What is the author’s attitude to high school students’ working part-time
He is against it. B. He feels proud of it.
C. He considers it worth a try. D. He thinks it does them good.
What does the author think of today’s adults
They are proud of high school students.
They expect too much of high school students.
They are more stressed than high school students.
They don’t fully understand high school students.
What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Stress. B. Schoolwork. C. Part-time job. D. School life.
What is the text mainly about
The roles of the youth in today’s society.
The stressful life of high school students.
The way to deal with stress of school life.
The differences between parents and high school students.

Should We Fear Maths
How good are you at maths Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split the bill after a meal, to calculating your household bills. But many dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real
sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing (令人沮丧的), but this maths anxiety is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said
they worried maths classes would be difficult. Psychologists (心理学家) have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that articulating your fears can loosen their hold on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a
threat. Ideally, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
What do we know about maths from Paragraph 1
It is less useful in our daily life.
It is a subject that all of us love it.
The anxiety about it depresses many people.
The worries about it perfectly reflect our ability.
What does the underlined word “dread” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Like. B. Fear. C. Overcome. D. Challenge.
How does the author express maths anxiety in Paragraph 2
By listing numbers.
By giving examples.
By making comparisons.
By explaining definitions.
What attitude should we take when facing maths
A. Different. B. Negative. C. Opposite. D. Positive.
D
The measure of a good night’s sleep is usually based on two things—the amount of time spent sleeping and the quality of that sleep. But now researchers say there is a third thing that matters even more than the other two when it comes to keeping good sleep habits, and that is having a regular bedtime.
A study has found that going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day have an important effect on one’s health. Adults who stick to a regular bedtime tend to weigh less, have lower blood sugar and reduced risk of heart disease.
The researchers studied the sleeping habits of 2,000 adults with an average age of 69. They found that people with greater irregularity (无规律) in their sleep patterns tended to go to sleep later at night, feel sleepy and sleep more during the day, and experienced reduced light exposure. These people were also more likely to be stressed. Among the three kinds of sleep problems, sleep regularity was the most strongly associated with health.
Of course, there are many people for whom this may be impossible, such as night-shift workers or those with
late-night duty. But for those who don’t have mandatory (强制的) reasons to stay up late, they should make an effort to go to bed at the same time every night. Skip the late afternoon coffee. Get off the phone. Try this calculator to figure out the best bedtime.
As Matthew Walker, a scientist, wrote, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” Surely that’s reasonable enough to go to bed on time.
32 What can we infer from the research
People feel more stressed when they grow older. B. The old often have less sleep.
C. Adults enjoy sleeping late. D. Regular bedtime does good to our health.
Which of the following influences health most
Reduced light exposure. B. Sleep regularity.
C. Sleeping during the day. D. Sleeping later at night.
According to the author, those who don’t have to stay up late should .
Avoid the late-night duty. B. Skip the late-night coffee.
C. Get off the phone while working. D. Try to sleep at the same time each night.
What’s the best title for the text
The Importance of Sleep B. Ways to Have a Good Sleep
C. Regular Bedtime for Your Health D. The Suitable Time for Sleep

Going from middle school into the freshman year of high school is a big change. 36
Be open to new friendships.
High school is all about experiencing new things, including new friendships. Getting to know people you haven’t met before is a great way to broaden your horizons (眼界). 37 Simply sitting with a new person at lunch can
be enough to get the ball rolling.
Explore the campus.
For most people, going off to high school means heading off to a new campus. 38 They might be able
to show you round the campus, which will make you have more confidence as you go on with your freshman year.
Get organized.
Academically speaking, high school and middle school are very different. 39 You can buy a planner
(记事簿) and spend a few minutes each night going over the notes you took in class that day. Staying on top of your studies will make the transition (过渡) from middle school to high school much easier.
40
While there’s no need to plan every day for the next three years, it can’t hurt to make notes of classes you want to take or activities you’d like to try. Believe it or not, the three years goes by really fast. Having a plan in place will help you make good use of your high school experience.
A Create a three-year plan
Be open to new experiences.
If you are nervous, start small.
Try to get as organized as possible so you can stay on top of your work.
That way, you’ll have a better idea of some of the things you can expect.

根据第二段中“Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that (许多学生在高中时就开始了他们的第一份工作,所以现在你每天早上都要上学,然后是在家
和工作中的责任。当你在那里把工作都完成的时候,你太累了,无法完成你的作业,但你熬夜去完成作
业,第二天回到学校感觉很困。这有什么好处?)”可知作者反对课后做兼职。故选 A。
根据第二段中“Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress.(成年人经常告诉我们,我们不知道什么是压力。但我们有自己的压力水平。)”以及第四段“My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not
include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.(我想说的是:高中生的压力比成年人想象的要大得多。
根据最后一段中的“I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the
responsibilities are serious.
根据文章第一段“If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.(如果有人问我现在的学生是什么感觉,我可能会这样回答他们:在当今社会做学生并不总是容易的。)”以及第二段第一句“Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress.(成年人经常告诉我们,我们不知道什么是压力。但我们有自己的压力水平。)”可知作者作为学生也很不容易,也有要面对的压力;文章下文作者详细阐述了高中生面临的来自学业、兼职、同辈和校园欺凌等各方面的压力,同时还将其与成年人的压力做了对比。由此可知,全文主要围绕高中学生充满压力的生活展开,因此 B 项“The stressful life of high school students.(高中生紧张的生活。)”

The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Psychologists (心理学家) have been trying to work out why mental
arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that
articulating your fears can loosen their hold on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat.
A. Different. B. Negative. C. Opposite. D. Positive.
C 29. B 30. A 31. D

根据划线词下文“when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. (他们不得不处理数字和数值,感到真正的担忧和困惑的时刻)”可知,此处是指许多人害怕与数 字打交道的时刻,所以 dread 意为“害怕”,和 B 选项“Fear”同义。故选 B 项。
【30 题详解】

Of course, there are many people for whom this may be impossible, such as night-shift workers or those with late-night duty. But for those who don’t have mandatory (强制的) reasons to stay up late, they should make an effort
to go to bed at the same time every night. Skip the late afternoon coffee. Get off the phone. Try this calculator to figure out the best bedtime.
As Matthew Walker, a scientist, wrote, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” Surely that’s reasonable enough to go to bed on time.
What can we infer from the research
People feel more stressed when they grow older. B. The old often have less sleep.
C. Adults enjoy sleeping late. D. Regular bedtime does good to our health.
Which of the following influences health most
Reduced light exposure. B. Sleep regularity.
C. Sleeping during the day. D. Sleeping later at night.
According to the author, those who don’t have to stay up late should .
A. Avoid the late-night duty. B. Skip the late-night coffee.
C. Get off the phone while working. D. Try to sleep at the same time each night.

G 37. C 38. F 39. D 40. A
根据上文“Going from middle school into the freshman year of high school is a big change. (从初中到高一是一个很大的挑战。)”可知,本句提出了话题“新生入学是一个挑战”,而下文中出现了小标题,说明这里需要一个过渡句承上启下,G 项“Here are some ways to help you deal with anxious feelings and prepare for the first year.(以下是一些帮助你处理焦虑情绪并为第一年做好准备的方法。)”是一个总起下文的句子,且句中“help you deal with anxious feelings and prepare for the first year(帮助你处理焦虑情绪并为第一年做好准备)”是对上文中“挑战”的应对,符合语境。故选 G 项。
根据上文“Getting to know people you haven’t met before is a great way to broaden your horizons (眼界). (结识你从未见过的人是拓宽你眼界的好方法。)”可知,与陌生人接触是可以增加人脉的方法之一,而空后内容 “Simply sitting with a new person at lunch can be enough to get the ball rolling.(仅仅是和一个陌生人共进午餐就足以让事情开始发展。)” C 项“If you’re nervous, start small.(如果你紧张,从小事做起。)”
They might be able to show you round the campus, which will make you have more confidence as you
go on with your freshman year.(他们可能会带你参观校园,这会让你在大一的时候更有信心。)” F 项“If you worry about the unknown, reach out to the school and see if someone can help.(如果你对未知的事情感到担心,那就联系学校,看看是否有人能帮你。)”
根据上文“Academically speaking, high school and middle school are very different. (从学术上讲,高中和中学有很大的不同。)”和下文“You can buy a planner (记事簿) and spend a few minutes each night going over the notes you took in class that day. (你可以买一个记事本,每天晚上花几分钟复习你当天在课堂上做的笔
记。)”可知,本段主要讲述在学习方面初高中的不同,作者也给出具体的建议:对于学习要有所整理。D项“Try to get as organized as possible so you can stay on top of your work.(尽可能地组织起来,这样你就可以随时掌握你的学习。)”符合语境,其中“as organized as possible(尽可能有条理)”与小标题“Get organized.(要有条理。)”
根据本段内容“While there’s no need to plan every day for the next three years, it can’t hurt to make notes of classes you want to take or activities you’d like to try. Believe it or not, the three years goes by really fast. Having a plan in place will help you make good use of your high school experience.(虽然没有必要为未来三年的每一天做计划,但把你想参加的课程或想尝试的活动记下来也无
A 项“Create a three-year plan.(制定一个三年计划。)” 故选 A 项。

Just then, Mrs. Green walked over and patted his shoulder gently, saying, “Take it easy, Jim. I believe in you. ” When his name was called, Jim took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. The audience was quiet. He sat down, put his fingers on the strings, and started playing. Soon, the sweet music filled the hall.
After the performance, Jim walked off the stage with a big smile. Many classmates came over to praise him, saying his playing was wonderful. A boy named Mike even asked if he could teach him to play the guitar. Jim nodded happily. That day, he made his first friend in high school. He realized that Mrs. Green was right — showing his talent could help him connect with others. From then on, Jim became more confident and open. He started talking to his classmates and even joined the school music club, where he found more friends who shared his passion for music.
