In 2006,the 24 solar terms were listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in China, and they were added to the UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list in 2016.
The 24 solar terms are a knowledge system about time. They show the sun moves between the Northern Hemisphere(半球) and the Southern Hemisphere. In December, the sun is in the Southern Hemisphere. When June comes, the sun is in the Northern Hemisphere. After the 24 solar terms achieved recognition(认可) from UNESCO,an organization which spreads the cultural heritage of the 24 solar terms was set up.
“We want to spread and protect traditional culture as well as develop it in a creative way,” said the leader of the organization. Some experts did research, gave speeches and wrote books. Some groups organized some shows and competitions. A winner of the second place of a competition produced a long painting describing some customs related to each term.
“When creating this painting,I realized 24 solar terms affected people’s lives. For example,in many places, people have the custom of celebrating the beginning of winter. When winter comes, agricultural activities end,so people wear new clothes to greet each other. It means many folk customs are closely related to agricultural activities,” he says.
“Neixiang County,Henan Province, has a history of giving a performance of dachunniu(beating the spring cow) to celebrate the beginning of spring. It also means the beginning of spring ploughing (耕地) .Farmers do their work according to the 24 solar terms,” he adds.
