Nick Torrance, a junior in high school, suffers from muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩 症), and attends school in a specialized wheelchair. The muscle disease prevents him from accomplishing many everyday tasks, such as carrying his books and putting things away in his locker(储物柜). So he had a fellow student assigned to help him. But Amy Smith, the school’s occupational therapist(治疗师), thought that being able to do something simple like opening his locker on his own would be empowering.
Amy initially thought they would be able to buy a device to help. But searching online turned up nothing that could meet their needs—everything needed a keycode or some other physical action, things her disabled student couldn’t do. After the outside search for a method came up short, she looked within the school itself for an answer. Amy turned to the school’s robotics instructor.
The instructor, in turn, suggested that two of his most capable students take on the project: Micah Stuhldreher and Wyatt Smrcka. They took first place in a national robotics competition, so they were a natural choice to tackle the locker door problem with a robotics solution. Micah and Wyatt wasted no time getting down to work and for an hour each school day, the boys brainstormed, built, and rebuilt various versions of the device until they landed on the perfect solution one year later.
Like in any device development, it took a lot of trial and error for Micah and
Wyatt to make something that would work for their target audience. For example, they initially built a locker-opening button, but Nick wasn’t strong enough to push it, so they replaced it with a sensor.
Now, between classes Nick steers(驾驶,控制) his electric wheelchair to his locker and waves his hand over a sensor on the arm of the wheelchair. A few seconds later, the locker door swings open. Another wave closes the door. Nick can make it with ease—it may be a small thing, but it gives him a sense of independence.
24. Why did Amy Smith want a device
A. To help treat a muscle disease.
B. To inspire a robotics invention.
C. To encourage cooperation at school.
D. To increase her student’s confidence.
25. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A. Nick can open and close the locker without sitting in his wheelchair now.
B. The brilliant boys wasted no time and tackled the problem immediately.
C. Amy helped Nick by buying a device which can open the locker.
D. The success of the device came through numerous failures.
26. With a sensor in his wheelchair, Nick can ______.
A. move around easily B. put his things away
C. open and close his locker D. continue his schooling
27. According to the passage, which words can best describe Micah and Wyatt
A. Caring and passionate. B. Talented and ambitious.
C. Sensitive and insightful. D. Humble and warmhearted.

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labour through your work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语) as “Get up , John ! You’ll be late for work again !” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can make your life fit it better. Habit can help. Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(打乱) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to . If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam(精力) and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn(哈欠) and stretch . Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.
28. Which of the following causes family quarrels
A. Familiar monologues.
B. Not knowing each other’s energy cycle.
C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.
D. Attempts to control the energy of other family members
29. If you want to work better at your low point in the morning, you should .
A. change your energy cycle B. overcome your laziness
C. go to bed earlier D. get up early than usual
30. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will .
A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work
B. help you to control your temper early in the day
C. enable you to get your energy on your routine work
D. keep your energy cycle under control all day
31. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Change Your Habits B. Save Your Energy
C. Daily Energy Cycle D. Temperature-and-Energy Peak
D
Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead a better way of doing things. All these, however, remains true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes efficient, people are able to conduct one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets(小器具), such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory.
Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the
supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.
It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.
32. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to _______.
A. live a better life B. look for better methods
C. change ways of living D. accept technology and advance steadily
33. The author explains “efficiency comes with a price” by _______.
A. describing a process B. using examples
C. following time order D. making classification
34. What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.
B. People review the past with great regret.
C. People’s attitude decides the use of technology.
D. Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.

Family traditions are things that families do together on a regular basis. 35 They can be repeated daily, weekly, monthly or once a year. It is important for families to observe their traditions even as their children get older. Here are reasons to observe family traditions:
Family traditions create good feelings and special moments to remember. They are fun things to do. 36 These are the memories that will last a lifetime.
37 Being a part of a family is more than living in the same home or having the same last name. It is about relationships and family bonds. Since family traditions are something you do together, they strengthen the bonds you have between each other creating a stronger sense of belonging to the family.
Family traditions help teens a lot when they are trying to figure out who they are, which job teenagers often do. A family encourages a teen to be a part of it and its traditions provide a strong foundation for teens to stand on. 38
39 Every day teens face some very difficult issues. Knowing that they are secure and have a family to turn to is a powerful tool to use against negative peer pressure, drug use influences, etc.
A. Family traditions offer teens a sense of security.
B. Family traditions help parents inform their children of the family’s values.

Do you think you’re a good listener Chances are you do. But studies show that most people seriously overestimate their ability to listen. The truth is we are generally not good at listening, and our listening comprehension declines as we age.
Why aren’t we good at listening One reason concerns the speed at which we think. The adult brain can process up to around 400 words per minute. This means during a conversation an average person thinks more than three times faster than he speaks. Therefore, we can easily think about something else while someone is talking to us, allowing our mind to wander or get sidetracked. Thinking about how you will reply while someone is still talking is one of the most common barriers to effective listening.
Another factor that contributes to our poor listening is our ever-decreasing attention span (持续时间). According to a study conducted by Microsoft, in 2000 — around the time the mobile revolution began—the average human attention span was 12 seconds; by 2013, it had fallen to 8 seconds! Our mobile devices provide constant distractions, which can be very destructive to listening. Test results have shown that being interrupted by a cell phone lowers listening comprehension by 20 percent.
Interruptions and distractions can cause a dramatic decline in listening ability—but they don’t have to. More and more people now realize that listening is a skill that can be developed through practice. Learning to observe a speaker’s body language and emotions, for example, can improve our active listening. Even the simple act of note-taking or making eye contact can help us stay focused while listening.
The rewards of effective listening are many. Research suggests that people who are good listeners make better leaders. And a recent study indicates that employees who don’t believe their bosses are listening to them are less likely to offer helpful suggestions and new ideas. As Dr. Ralph Nichols once said, “The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.”
40. According to Paragraph 2, why is it easy for us to get distracted during a conversation
41. What has caused the decrease of our attention span
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The decline of listening ability caused by distractions is sharp, and it is hard to be prevented.
43. Please introduce the rewards that effective listening brings to you.
