Two years ago, Holmes participated in Back to School Bash. He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from
the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.
Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”
Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”
What do we know about Holmes two years ago
He had only one job. B. He earned a lot as a barber.
C. He offered free haircuts to the poor kids. D. He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.
The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that .
Holmes is very strict with the kids
Holmes also learns a lot from the kids
being a fluent reader needs plenty of practice
many kids have trouble in reading a storybook
What can we learn from the last Paragraph
Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.
Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.
Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.
Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.
What is the best title for the text
The Storybook Barber B. Back to School Bash
C. Reading Counts A Lot D. Care About the Kids
C
“Is the glass half empty or half full ” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
However, is this necessarily a good thing Recent studies indicate that it all depends. There is such a thing as too much positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that
many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological problems.
Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
So my simple advice to you is to do what gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be.
Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
Why does the writer mention the glass at the beginning of the text
To give some evidence. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present an argument. D. To explain his ideas.
What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
What is the main idea of paragraph 3
The cause of overly positivity.
The prevention of overly positivity.
The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
Which of the following may the writer agree with
Positivity is the key to success.
We needn’t stay positive all the time.
There isn’t such a thing as overly positive.
Positivity always does a harm effect to our lives.
D
One of the greatest killers in the Western world is heart disease. The death rate from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more attention to reducing stress in their work.
However, Western health-care systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the U.S. health-care system is spending large sums of money on the surgical (外科的) treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis (强调) on treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a
few years ago are now performed every day in U.S. hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery.
Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people, some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money away from the question of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery even on patients for whom an operation is unnecessary — because the equipment and expert skills are there. A government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only 15 percent of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than 100,000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.
What effect has modern technology had on medicine
It has reduced the costs of medical treatment.
It hasn’t helped save any patients.
It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgery.
It has helped educate people about the prevention of heart disease.
What does the underlined word “recover” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Boost. B. Spring up. C. Get back. D. Absorb.
The author would agree that .
more money should be spent on the prevention of heart disease
heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditions
modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than before
the public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease
Which would be the best title for the passage
The Greatest Killer in the West B. Heart Disease: Treat or Prevent
C. Old Technology and Heart Surgery D. Heart Surgery: Advantages

The zero-effort holiday workout (锻炼)
Build fun activities into your time away and you may even burn off the extra calories (卡路里) you eat. Try to be active for at least two hours a day.
Go for an evening walk. Take a leaf out of the book of people in southern Mediterranean countries and go for a walk when it’s a bit cooler. Try to make it a daily routine while you’re away. It’s a pleasant way to experience local life. 36
Get in the water. Don’t just relax at the water’s edge but go for a swim from time to time, play games or just walk in the water. 37 Or if that all sounds a bit too cold and wet, rent a rowing boat, or go sailing. Messing about
on the water burns calories and exercises your muscles (肌肉) more than being on dry land.
Fly a kite. 38 It will give your upper body a great workout as you struggle with that kite and run to
keep it in the air or follow it down when it falls to earth.
Fly a Frisbee ( 飞盘). 39 And if you play Frisbee on a sandy beach, you’ll be working those leg
muscles that much harder.
40 Have a daily competition in the swimming pool, such as swimming between people’s legs or
making the biggest splash, or a week-long badminton tournament. And make sure you make it as simply as possible.
Play ball games.
Hold a family Olympics.
You may never think of it as an exercise.
This is an excellent activity for a windy day.
And you’ll feel spiritually and physically refreshed.
You’ll get your heart rate up every time you run or jump for that plastic plate.
Simply standing in the water is a good workout thanks to the action of the water.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was
small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking
from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

A Remarkable Person I Admire
The person I admire most is Tu Youyou, a Chinese pharmacologist born in 1930. Her greatest achievement is discovering artemisinin, which saves millions from malaria. She even won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
What moves me is her perseverance. In the 1970s, with poor resources, she and her team tested over 2,000 recipes and never gave up after failures.
Tu’s story inspires me deeply. When I struggle with studies, her spirit pushes me to keep trying. I learn that success needs hard work and I’ll follow her to chase my dreams.
读后续写参考答案:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can
change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the
cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the
runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t
take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

W: Hello, everyone. I have great news to report. Recently, Alice Green was given a higher position in our company with higher pay. Congratulations to her! As her boss, I’ve seen her work for our company for a number of years, and things have gone quite well. First, she helped our sales department increase sales by 200% last year. Before that, we only earned 1,500,000 dollars a year. We have advertised and promoted our products at trade shows, on TV and in the newspaper, and customers really enjoyed our products and they were satisfied with our service, too. Our company has become better known, not only in our area but also in other cities. All of us know that what people say about our business to their family and friends is most important to our company. Any high technologies can’t compare with it. Besides increased sales, Alice has established a good working relationship with her colleagues. She recognizes others’ abilities and respects others’ opinions. I believe she has the ability to lead the sales department in the right direction. Therefore, she deserves the promotion and pay raise. OK, let’s welcome Alice Green to speak to us.
