David Brown is known as the world’s fastest completely blind runner. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.
Brown says he was “living in fear for a number of years” — until he discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he attended the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.It was at that time that he knew he wanted to compete himself.
Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10.99 in the men’s 100-meter dash to take home the gold.
Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over time.He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured because he couldn’t see the ball coming.“I took the opportunity to run on the playground, and realised I had some speed there,” he says.

He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running.Brown was one of the 25 winners of an essay contest that got to attend the event in Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome obstacles, noting that as he grew up he struggled with depression.
It’s crucial to be in sync with your running partner. His new partner Steward says he doesn’t have to slow down when running with Brown, because he’s fast.A 10-or 11-second race doesn’t require much speaking, Steward says, beyond the occasional cues.

Three teenage tennis stars have been amazing crowds at this year’s US Open (美国网球公开赛). One of the athletes has left the contest because of an injury, but two others have reached the semi-finals, after defeating many famous players.
Leylah Annie Fernandez is a 19-year-old Canadian, who is small compared to many other players, and has a different playing style. She often hits the ball early, trying to make it difficult for her opponent (对手) to reach it. So far, Fernandez’s style is working wonderfully. She defeated Naomi Osaka, who’s ranked (排名) third in the world. She also defeated the world’s #5 player and #17 player.
Earlier this year, 18-year-old British athlete Emma Raducanu was ranked #339 in the world. But people began to notice when she made it to Wimbledon’s fourth round this summer. On Monday, Raducanu beat American Shelby Rogers, who had just beaten the world’s #1 female, Australian Ash Barty. Yesterday, Raducanu faced #11 Belinda Bencic who won the gold medal at this summer’s Olympics. Raducanu managed to defeat Bencic 6∶3, 6∶4. She has now reached the semi-finals.
Carlos Alcaraz, an 18-year-old from Spain, entered the US Open ranked #55 in the world. On the tournament’s fifth day, he defeated the world’s #3 player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in a 5-set match. On Sunday, he beat Peter Gojowczyk in another 5-set match, becoming the youngest player ever to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open. On Tuesday night, Alcaraz was forced to give up in the middle of a match because of an injury in his right leg.
Many people believe that being young and unknown gives these players more freedom, since they’re playing without much pressure. Because no one expected them to win at all, no matter how far they go, they’re making progress. Many older players warn that even though it’s exciting to see young players do great things, the pressure of continuing to play well can be very difficult. They point to a long history of young players who started off strong, but had trouble continuing to play at the same level.
8.What do we learn about the young players?
A.Leylah Annie Fernandez is slow in action.
B.Emma Raducanu has made big progress.
C.Carlos Alcaraz has reached the semi-finals.
D.Shelby Rogers has beaten Emma Raducanu.
9.Which of the following probably has left the contest?
A.Leylah Annie Fernandez.
B.Emma Raducanu.
C.Carlos Alcaraz.
D.Shelby Rogers.
10.Why do the young players perform well according to the last paragraph?
A.They are not famous.
B.They practice very hard.
C.Their opponents aren’t strong.
D.Their opponents don’t work hard.

A.By telling some stories.

A company testing driverless cars has received permission from the state of California to operate the vehicles without backup drivers. The tests will be carried out by Cruise, the self-driving car company owned by General Motors.
Cruise reported last week that it got a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to let the self-driving cars travel on their own.The company plans to have them operating in San Francisco by the end of this year.
Cruise is still just testing its self-driving vehicles. But it plans to offer ride-sharing services in major cities across the United States in the future.Until now, testing was only carried out with human backup drivers in all Cruise vehicles.Rules required the backup drivers to be inside the cars and ready to take control of the vehicles if necessary.
Cruise has completed enough testing to feel that it is now ready to safely operate the cars without humans, said company spokesman Ray Wert.Wert said that Cruise will go neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood in San Francisco and launch the driverless vehicles slowly before spreading to the whole city.It will also hold community meetings to answer people’s questions about the program.
“We understand that this is a trust race as much as it is a technology race,” Wert told The Associated Press.“This is absolutely about making sure that we’re doing this with San Francisco.”
The approval in California followed a similar decision in Arizona.Arizona state officials approved a request by Waymo, a company owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., to open its ride-sharing service to the public in vehicles without human drivers. The service was launched last week in the city of Phoenix.
Steven Shladover is a research engineer at the University of California, Berkeley.Shladover says the latest moves by Waymo and Cruise are the next logical steps as the technology progresses.
“I don’t see them as revolutionary steps, but they’re part of this step-by-step progress toward getting the technology to be able to work under a wider range of conditions,” he said.
12.What will Cruise be allowed to do?
A.Produce driverless cars.
B.Begin to test driverless cars.
C.Provide ride-sharing services in America.
D.Let their driverless cars run by themselves.
13.What’s Ray Wert’s attitude to Cruise’s driverless cars?
A.Curious. B.Worried.
C.Confident. D.Surprised.
14.What do we learn about Waymo?
A.It is more traditional than Cruise.
B.It has progressed faster than Cruise.
C.Its driverless cars aren’t safe enough.
D.Its driverless cars haven’t hit the road.
15.What does Steven Shladover think of the latest moves by Waymo and Cruise?
A.They are unbelievable.
B.They involve great risks.
C.They are not surprising.
D.They are not successful.
Ⅱ.阅读七选五
One girl said, “My biggest challenge is self-esteem. 16 I feel ugly.” If you ever feel this way, you’re not pared to the models we see in movies and magazines, we all feel ugly.
17 But if your self-confidence or lack of it comes from how you look, you’ve got serious problems. If you don’t have the “look” or body type our society has stamped “ideal”, so what?
The fact is, there are lots of kids with big noses and unfashionable clothes that are full of self-confidence. 18 Obviously, there’s so much more to healthy self-worth than beauty and biceps.
Embrace the way you look naturally.Even if you don’t find it beautiful right now, there’s always someone who will.Seriously!
19 — and do not care so much about your appearance.Oprah Winfrey said it best: “You have to change your perception (看法).It’s not about weight — it’s caring for yourself on a daily basis.”
Author Susan Tanner, who was once an insecure teen with a bad case of acne, never forgot the lesson her mother taught her.“You must do everything you can to make your appearance pleasing, but the minute you walk out the door, forget yourself and start concentrating on others.” 20
When all is said and done, learning to like yourself is a choice. It may not seem that way, but it is.It’s a matter of learning to get your security from within, not from without — or from what others say about you.
A.Just be your personal best.
B.This is good advice for all of us.
C.There are too many beautiful people.
D.The important thing is feeling good physically.
E.It’s wrong to judge a person by his or her looks.
F.There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best.
G.And there’re many well-dressed kids who have no self-confidence at all.

discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he
attended the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.It was at that time that he

Three teenage tennis stars have been amazing crowds at this year’s
US Open (美国网球公开赛). One of the athletes has left the contest
because of an injury, but two others have reached the semi-finals, after
defeating many famous players.
Leylah Annie Fernandez is a 19-year-old Canadian, who is small
compared to many other players, and has a different playing style. She
often hits the ball early, trying to make it difficult for her opponent (对
手) to reach it. So far, Fernandez’s style is working wonderfully. She
defeated Naomi Osaka, who’s ranked (排名) third in the world. She
also defeated the world’s #5 player and #17 player.
Earlier this year, 18-year-old British athlete Emma Raducanu was
ranked #339 in the world. But people began to notice when she made it to
Wimbledon’s fourth round this summer. On Monday, Raducanu beat
American Shelby Rogers, who had just beaten the world’s #1 female,
Australian Ash Barty. Yesterday, Raducanu faced #11 Belinda Bencic
who won the gold medal at this summer’s Olympics. Raducanu managed to
defeat Bencic 6∶3, 6∶4. She has now reached the semi-finals.
Carlos Alcaraz, an 18-year-old from Spain, entered the US Open
ranked #55 in the world. On the tournament’s fifth day, he defeated the
world’s #3 player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in a 5-set match. On Sunday, he
beat Peter Gojowczyk in another 5-set match, becoming the youngest
player ever to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open. On Tuesday night,
Alcaraz was forced to give up in the middle of a match because of an
injury in his right leg.
Many people believe that being young and unknown gives these
players more freedom, since they’re playing without much pressure.
Because no one expected them to win at all, no matter how far they go,
they’re making progress. Many older players warn that even though it’s
exciting to see young players do great things, the pressure of continuing
to play well can be very difficult. They point to a long history of young
players who started off strong, but had trouble continuing to play at the
same level.

A company testing driverless cars has received permission from the
state of California to operate the vehicles without backup drivers. The tests
will be carried out by Cruise, the self-driving car company owned by
General Motors.
Cruise reported last week that it got a permit from the California
Department of Motor Vehicles to let the self-driving cars travel on their
own.The company plans to have them operating in San Francisco by the
end of this year.
Cruise is still just testing its self-driving vehicles. But it plans to offer
ride-sharing services in major cities across the United States in the
future.Until now, testing was only carried out with human backup drivers
in all Cruise vehicles.Rules required the backup drivers to be inside the
cars and ready to take control of the vehicles if necessary.
Cruise has completed enough testing to feel that it is now ready to
safely operate the cars without humans, said company spokesman Ray
Wert.Wert said that Cruise will go neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood in
San Francisco and launch the driverless vehicles slowly before spreading to
the whole city.It will also hold community meetings to answer people’s
questions about the program.
“We understand that this is a trust race as much as it is a technology
race,” Wert told The Associated Press.“This is absolutely about making
sure that we’re doing this with San Francisco.”
The approval in California followed a similar decision in
Arizona.Arizona state officials approved a request by Waymo, a
company owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., to open its
ride-sharing service to the public in vehicles without human drivers. The
service was launched last week in the city of Phoenix.
Steven Shladover is a research engineer at the University of
California, Berkeley.Shladover says the latest moves by Waymo and
Cruise are the next logical steps as the technology progresses.
“I don’t see them as revolutionary steps, but they’re part of this step-
by-step progress toward getting the technology to be able to work under a
wider range of conditions,” he said.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
One girl said, “My biggest challenge is self-esteem. 16 I feel
ugly.” If you ever feel this way, you’re not pared to the models
we see in movies and magazines, we all feel ugly.
17 But if your self-confidence or lack of it comes from how you
look, you’ve got serious problems. If you don’t have the “look” or body
type our society has stamped “ideal”, so what?
The fact is, there are lots of kids with big noses and unfashionable
clothes that are full of self-confidence. 18 Obviously, there’s so
much more to healthy self-worth than beauty and biceps.
Embrace the way you look naturally.Even if you don’t find it beautiful
right now, there’s always someone who will.Seriously!
19 — and do not care so much about your appearance.Oprah
Winfrey said it best: “You have to change your perception (看法).It’s
not about weight — it’s caring for yourself on a daily basis.”
Author Susan Tanner, who was once an insecure teen with a bad
case of acne, never forgot the lesson her mother taught her.“You must do
everything you can to make your appearance pleasing, but the minute
you walk out the door, forget yourself and start concentrating on
others.” 20
When all is said and done, learning to like yourself is a choice. It
may not seem that way, but it is.It’s a matter of learning to get your
security from within, not from without — or from what others say about
you.
A. Just be your personal best.
B. This is good advice for all of us.
C. There are too many beautiful people.
D. The important thing is feeling good physically.
E. It’s wrong to judge a person by his or her looks.
F. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your best.
G. And there’re many well-dressed kids who have no self-confidence at all.

19. D 下句建议我们不要太在乎自己的外表,我们应该在乎的是健
