  Part 2
Suddenly, a player and I crashed into each other.Pain raced through my body.My knee hurt badly .[7]The team gathered around, looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin , and my team was behind by 10 points.
“[8]I don’t think I can play anymore , coach,”[9]I said quietly as the doctor put an ice pack on my knee.
“No way,” the coach replied sharply .“We’ve got no more players!”
“What about Paul?” someone suggested.
“Paul?” said the coach.“He can’t play!”
“Give him a shot, coach!” I said.“What have we got to lose?”
“That’s right,” another player said.“We’re losing anyway.Let Paul play!”
“Let me try, coach! I won’t let you down !” Paul said.
“OK, OK!” the coach finally agreed.“Don’t let us down, Paul. It’s your time to shine.”
Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court.[10]And clearly, all the extra hours that he’d spent practising alone paid off . The other team just couldn’t keep up with his energy and speed. He made shot after shot, and the crowd couldn’t stop clapping and cheering.
When the game ended, our team had won by two points.
“Well,”said the coach as he hit Paul on the shoulder , “you’ve just earned your place on the team, big guy!”

My sister Megan was babysitting at the Quinns’ house. It was around
ten o’clock on a Friday night, Megan was watching TV and a loud knock
on the door surprised her.
Megan spied through the peephole and saw a middle-aged man
standing in the entryway.
  “Who is it?” she asked.
  “Your brother Ben.”
Megan realised the man had mistaken her for his sister. She replied,
“Mrs Quinn can’t come to the door right now.” She thought of our
mother’s warning: Never open the door for a stranger while you’re
babysitting.
“The truth is I’m babysitting,” she said through the screen. The
words were out of her mouth before she remembered her mother’s second
warning: Don’t advertise that you’re alone.Megan quickly added, “Mrs
Quinn will be home soon.”
“It’s awfully cold out here. Can I wait inside?” The man asked.
Megan hesitated.“Couldn’t you come back in a little while? Mrs
Quinn left a number for me to contact her,” she said.“I’ll call her and see
what she says.”
The smile vanished from the man’s face.“You’re going to leave me
outside to freeze to death in the meantime? Wait until she finds out you
wouldn’t let me in! You’ll be in so much trouble!” With the words he
left.
A little after eleven, Mrs Quinn came back home.Megan bit her
lip.“I didn’t have any problems with the girls. But later your brother came
to the door, and I was afraid to let him in.When I told him I wasn’t going
to open the door, he got really mad at me and left.I’m sorry.”
  Mrs Quinn frowned.“My brother? I don’t have a brother!”
Megan was proud of herself for following her instincts (本能).She
had kept Mrs Quinn’s kids — and herself — safe that night. It was a
valuable lesson for my sister and for me.
