What is the video about
The novel is written according to a true story. After the end of the Second World War, Hemingway moved to Cuba(古巴), where he met the old fisherman Gregorio. In 1930, Gregorio accidentally saved Hemingway in the storm. Since then, they formed a firm friendship, and often went fishing together.
Writing background
The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea, short heroic novel by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1952 and awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. It was his last major work of fiction. The story focus on an aging fisherman who spent his entire life at the sea and struggled for his life against bad luck, big fish, sharks and the sea itself.
The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago. After coming in empty-handed for 84 days, Santiago attempts to catch a huge fish. On the 85th day, unexpectedly, he hooks a giant marlin. With all his great experience and strength, he struggles with the fish for two days and finally lashes it to his boat. However, Santiago’s exhausting effort goes for naught. Sharks are drawn to the marlin. Although Santiago manages to kill a few, the sharks eat the fish, leaving behind only its skeleton.
