Cao Xueqin was a great writer during the Qing Dynasty, and best-known as the author of A Dream of Red Mansions, one of the Four Great Classic Chinese Novels.
Cao was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Cao’s great-grandfather, grandfather and his father were appointed in succession by the Emperor Kangxi as the Commissioner of Imperial Textile in Jiangning, stationed in today’s Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province.
But the good luck of the Cao family suddenly came to an end when a new emperor came to the throne. In 1727, the family’s properties were confiscated (没收) in a political struggle and the whole family was forced to move to today’s Beijing.
Cao had received very good education during his childhood and became an excellent poet and painter as a teenager. However, after the downfall of his family, he lived in poverty for the rest of his life in the western suburbs of Beijing. In later years, he could hardly make a living by selling his paintings, but he declined the recommendation by some friends to become a painter in the imperial court. Instead, he spent more than 10 years writing A Dream of Red Mansions.
Some of his friends said that every word written by Cao in the novel was soaked with “tears and blood” and a decade’s hardship Cao had endured in writing this novel was simply “intolerable and unimaginable”.
The novel tells the stories about four rich and prominent feudal families from their peak days to their decline. At the heart, there is a tragic love story about Jia Baoyu, the chief protagonist of the novel, and his younger cousin Lin Daiyu. But the novel goes far beyond that. It also portrays a galaxy of vivid, distinctive characters, describes the debauched (堕落的) lives of the noble class, offers a number of original and beautifully written poems, and reveals the corruption, political struggles and inhumanity of the feudalistic social system.
After its publication, the novel was so popular that many Chinese scholars devoted their lifetime to studying Cao’s work and later they developed a so-called Redology school.
24.What does the underlined sentence “Cao was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Cao had very wealthy parents. B.Cao was born into a poor family.
C.Cao had an unhappy childhood. D.Cao was fond of making money.
25.What can we learn from Cao Xueqin’s personal life experience?
A.Life is full of ups and downs. B.Where there is life, there is hope.
C.Misfortune may be an actual blessing. D.Every change is a change for the better.
26.Which words best describe Cao Xueqin according to the text?
A.Intelligent and practical. B.Optimistic and confident.
C.Generous and kind-hearted. D.Hardworking and strong-willed.
27.What is the sixth paragraph mainly about?
A.Why A Dream of Red Mansions is popular. B.How Cao wrote A Dream of Red Mansions.
C.The contents of A Dream of Red Mansions. D.The background of A Dream of Red Mansions.

FOOD WASTE
Will you eat everything in your lunch box today? If not, what will you do with what’s left over? Save it for another time or throw it in the bin? A new report by the United Nations estimates (估计) 17 percent of all the food produced around the world gets wasted each year. That means 931 million tons of wasted food! Most of the waste — 61 percent — happens in households, while food services such as restaurants and cafés make up 26 percent and shops make up 13 percent, the UN found.
“Many countries haven’t yet known how much food they have wasted, so they don’t understand how serious the problem is,” said Clementine O’Connor, from the UN Environment Program and co-author of the report.
Food waste is also bad for the environment. The UN Environment Program estimates that wasted food is responsible for 8-10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (排放).If food waste was a country, it would have the third highest greenhouse gas emissions in the world, after only the US and China.
The report found food waste in homes wasn’t limited to higher income countries such as the US, UK and Australia.Food waste researcher Professor Brian Roe, from Ohio State University in the US, said food was also sometimes wasted in poor countries because they didn’t have refrigerators.
Professor Brian Roe said household and cultural habits could contribute to waste at home, including “buy one, get one free” deals.Meanwhile, “use by” or “best by” dates on products could also be causing people to throw away food.People could be throwing out food because they think it is unsafe to eat, when in fact the date only shows when quality might decline.
28.Where does most of food waste happen?
A.At home. B.At cafés.
C.At shops. D.At restaurants.
29.Why does the author compare food waste to a country?
A.To tell us greenhouse gas emissions are very serious.
B.To tell us the US produces the most greenhouse gas.
C.To show food waste is common all over the world.
D.To show food waste does harm to the environment.
30.What did Professor Brian Roe try to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The harm of food waste. B.How food waste happens.
C.Why we shouldn’t waste food. D.The ways to reduce food waste.
31.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.Why Do People Waste Food? B.Where Do People Waste Food?
C.Food Waste Is A Serious Problem D.Food Waste and the Environment
D
Not only does AI do better than humans in what were uniquely human skills, but it also enjoys uniquely nonhuman abilities, which make the difference between AI and a human worker. Two particularly important nonhuman abilities that AI possesses are connectivity and updatability.
The benefits for human society are likely to be huge.AI doctors could provide far better and cheaper healthcare for billions of people, particularly for those who currently receive no healthcare at all.Hopefully, thanks to AI technology, in the future a poor villager in an underdeveloped country might come to enjoy far better healthcare via her smartphone than the richest person in the world gets today from the most advanced urban hospital.
Similarly, self-driving vehicles could provide people with much better transportation services, and in particular reduce mortality (死亡率) from traffic accidents.Today close to 1.25 million people are killed annually in traffic accidents (twice the number killed by war, crime, and terrorism combined).More than 90 percent of these accidents are caused by very human errors: somebody drinking alcohol and driving, somebody texting a message while driving, somebody falling asleep at the wheel, somebody daydreaming instead of paying attention to the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated in 2012 that 31 percent of fatal crashes in the United States involved alcohol abuse, 30 percent involved speeding, and 21 percent involved distracted drivers.Self-driving vehicles will never do any of these things.Though they suffer from their own problems and limitations, and though some accidents are inevitable, replacing all human drivers by computers is expected to reduce deaths and injuries on the road by about 90 percent.
It would therefore be madness to block automation in fields such as transport and healthcare just in order to protect human jobs. After all, what we ought to protect is humans — not jobs.Displaced drivers and doctors will just have to find something else to do.
32.What do we learn about AI doctors?
A.They will charge much higher. B.They will reach more patients.
C.They will offer individualized service. D.They will replace human doctors soon.
33.How does the author prove the benefits of self-driving vehicles?
A.By telling some stories. B.By listing some numbers.
C.By giving some examples. D.By answering some questions.
34.How many people’s lives would be saved every year if self-driving vehicles were used?
A.About 0.26 million. B.About 0.38 million.
C.About 0.75 million. D.About one million.
35.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To give an argument. B.To provide a solution.
C.To draw a conclusion. D.To make a suggestion.

A.It’s wise to buy nothing on this day.
B.Each country has its own shopping festival.
C.Many people are surprised how difficult this actually is.
D.The idea of Black Friday has also spread around the world.

Joy, a ten-year-old boy who loved nature, is always ready to help others, whether animals or humans. For example, he is always keeping water in a large basin in his yard for watering the birds and other animals.
One noon, he was playing on the grass in a bushy garden after school. He enjoyed the chirping (叽喳叫) birds, colourful butterflies, and two squirrels playing on the coconut trees. It was their own free kingdom, and Joy felt like an outsider. He decided to give them space to enjoy freely.
So he found an open grass and lay down, feeling like sunbathing on a greeny beach.Under the hot sun, Joy covered the eyes with his soft palms (手掌).His mind flew and thought about his class teacher Miss Shyla’s homework task — to do a good deed every day.
Joy stretched out his hands, fed the squirrel some crazy biscuits and played with it.He felt the tiny eyes of a squirrel upon him.And just then, Joy saw a big rat spying on him from a hole.Upon seeing the big rat, Joy rose to his feet before it silently moving and running towards the hole. Finally, he failed to find the rat and the rat hid into its hole.Joy lay down again.
As he enjoyed the greeny beach and the sight of the blue sky, he couldn’t help but thought, “What a wonderful and blessed world it is! We humans should allow the animals to live as they wished.”
Suddenly, a tiny bird fell to the ground before his eyes. The bird shook several times and then lost consciousness (知觉).Joy jumped up and tried his best to wake the bird up, but failed. He thought the bird had fainted (晕倒) because of the heat.He couldn’t bear to see the little creature suffer and decided to take care of the bird.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Joy picked up the bird and rushed back home.

At last, the bird came back to life and opened its eyes.

M:Sorry, I have forgotten John’s address.
W:You forgot again! It’s 1343 King Street.
(Text 2)
M:The car is very nice.Did you buy it last month?
W:No, I rented it for a holiday last week. And my own car I bought three years ago is still good.
(Text 3)
M:Your skirt is quite beautiful in color, isn’t it?
W:Yes, I bought it at a sale for half price. It cost me 12.
(Text 4)

M:I hear you are going to drive to New York this weekend.
W:Oh, I’ve changed my mind.
M:What?
W:I think flying will be more comfortable.

M:Well, I’ve traveled to Brazil on business twice and I’d really like to go there a third time.
W:Great! There will be a flight on Oct. 25th and ...
M:Flight? Forget that! I am afraid of flying.
W:Oh, how about traveling by ship?

W:Do you have any suggestions for us?
M:Well, actually I do hope that the camp can be extended to 10 days instead of just a week so that everybody can have a good rest.

M:What’s up?
W:Can you do me a favor to fix the lock for me?

W:Why bother? I do have a hammer.
M:OK.
W:Is 7 pm fine with you?
M:Actually, I’ll be at Mike’s to watch the match between Real Madrid and Barcelona then. What about 5 pm?
W:Certainly. Thanks! Hope you won’t miss the match.
M:I won’t. Would you like to join us?
W:Sounds good. How can we get to Mike’s?
M:We can either walk there or take a bus. It is not far away from your apartment.
W:Wait a moment. I’ll call the garage to see whether my car is ready. Maybe we can drive there.
M:Oh, that would be great. I’m leaving for the supermarket. Nothing is better than watching a football match with a bottle of beer.
W:Really? I’m afraid I don’t need to pick up the car as I can’t drink and drive.
M:OK. We can go there on foot, and come back by taxi.
W:OK, it’s a deal!

(Text 1)
M:Sorry, I have forgotten John’s address.
W:You forgot again! It’s 1343 King Street.
(Text 2)
M:The car is very nice.Did you buy it last month?
W:No, I rented it for a holiday last week. And my own car I bought
three years ago is still good.
(Text 3)
M:Your skirt is quite beautiful in color, isn’t it?
W:Yes, I bought it at a sale for half price. It cost me 12.
(Text 4)
M:I hope I can see you at my birthday party.
W:Oh, dear, I’ve almost forgotten. When is it?
M:Well, the day after April Fool’s Day. Easy to remember, isn’t it?
W:Yes, of course.
(Text 5)
M:I hear you are going to drive to New York this weekend.
W:Oh, I’ve changed my mind.
M:What?
W:I think flying will be more comfortable.
(Text 6)
W:Have a look at these brochures. Have you ever thought of visiting
South America?
M:Well, I’ve traveled to Brazil on business twice and I’d really like to
go there a third time.
W:Great! There will be a flight on Oct. 25th and ...
M:Flight? Forget that! I am afraid of flying.
W:Oh, how about traveling by ship?
M:Sorry, my wife is seasick.

W:Certainly. Thanks! Hope you won’t miss the match.

Cao Xueqin was a great writer during the Qing Dynasty, and best-
known as the author of A Dream of Red Mansions, one of the Four Great
Classic Chinese Novels.
Cao was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Cao’s great-
grandfather, grandfather and his father were appointed in succession by
the Emperor Kangxi as the Commissioner of Imperial Textile in
Jiangning, stationed in today’s Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu
Province.
But the good luck of the Cao family suddenly came to an end when a
new emperor came to the throne. In 1727, the family’s properties were
confiscated (没收) in a political struggle and the whole family was
forced to move to today’s Beijing.
Cao had received very good education during his childhood and
became an excellent poet and painter as a teenager. However, after the
downfall of his family, he lived in poverty for the rest of his life in the
western suburbs of Beijing. In later years, he could hardly make a living
by selling his paintings, but he declined the recommendation by some
friends to become a painter in the imperial court. Instead, he spent more
than 10 years writing A Dream of Red Mansions.
Some of his friends said that every word written by Cao in the novel
was soaked with “tears and blood” and a decade’s hardship Cao had
endured in writing this novel was simply “intolerable and unimaginable”.
The novel tells the stories about four rich and prominent feudal
families from their peak days to their decline. At the heart, there is a
tragic love story about Jia Baoyu, the chief protagonist of the novel,
and his younger cousin Lin Daiyu. But the novel goes far beyond that. It
also portrays a galaxy of vivid, distinctive characters, describes the
debauched (堕落的) lives of the noble class, offers a number of
original and beautifully written poems, and reveals the corruption,
political struggles and inhumanity of the feudalistic social system.
After its publication, the novel was so popular that many Chinese
scholars devoted their lifetime to studying Cao’s work and later they
developed a so-called Redology school.

FOOD WASTE
Will you eat everything in your lunch box today? If not, what will
you do with what’s left over? Save it for another time or throw it in the
bin? A new report by the United Nations estimates (估计) 17 percent
of all the food produced around the world gets wasted each year. That
means 931 million tons of wasted food! Most of the waste — 61
percent — happens in households, while food services such as restaurants
and cafés make up 26 percent and shops make up 13 percent, the UN
found.
“Many countries haven’t yet known how much food they have
wasted, so they don’t understand how serious the problem is,” said
Clementine O’Connor, from the UN Environment Program and co-author
of the report.
Food waste is also bad for the environment. The UN Environment
Program estimates that wasted food is responsible for 8-10 percent of
global greenhouse gas emissions (排放).If food waste was a country,
it would have the third highest greenhouse gas emissions in the world,
after only the US and China.
The report found food waste in homes wasn’t limited to higher
income countries such as the US, UK and Australia.Food waste
researcher Professor Brian Roe, from Ohio State University in the US,
said food was also sometimes wasted in poor countries because they didn’t
have refrigerators.
Professor Brian Roe said household and cultural habits could
contribute to waste at home, including “buy one, get one free”
deals.Meanwhile, “use by” or “best by” dates on products could also be
causing people to throw away food.People could be throwing out food
because they think it is unsafe to eat, when in fact the date only shows
when quality might decline.

D
Not only does AI do better than humans in what were uniquely human
skills, but it also enjoys uniquely nonhuman abilities, which make the
difference between AI and a human worker. Two particularly important
nonhuman abilities that AI possesses are connectivity and updatability.
The benefits for human society are likely to be huge.AI doctors could
provide far better and cheaper healthcare for billions of people,
particularly for those who currently receive no healthcare at
all.Hopefully, thanks to AI technology, in the future a poor villager in
an underdeveloped country might come to enjoy far better healthcare via
her smartphone than the richest person in the world gets today from the
most advanced urban hospital.
Similarly, self-driving vehicles could provide people with much
better transportation services, and in particular reduce mortality (死亡
率) from traffic accidents.Today close to 1.25 million people are killed
annually in traffic accidents (twice the number killed by war, crime,
and terrorism combined).More than 90 percent of these accidents are
caused by very human errors: somebody drinking alcohol and driving,
somebody texting a message while driving, somebody falling asleep at
the wheel, somebody daydreaming instead of paying attention to the
road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated in
2012 that 31 percent of fatal crashes in the United States involved alcohol
abuse, 30 percent involved speeding, and 21 percent involved
distracted drivers.Self-driving vehicles will never do any of these
things.Though they suffer from their own problems and limitations, and
though some accidents are inevitable, replacing all human drivers by
computers is expected to reduce deaths and injuries on the road by about
90 percent.
It would therefore be madness to block automation in fields such as
transport and healthcare just in order to protect human jobs. After all,
what we ought to protect is humans — not jobs.Displaced drivers and
doctors will just have to find something else to do.
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。作者通过医疗以及交通这两个领

D. They will replace human doctors soon.
解析: 推理判断题。根据第二段内容可知,在未来,人工智能
医生将会为数十亿人提供医疗服务,尤其是现在还无法享受医疗

33. How does the author prove the benefits of self-driving vehicles?
A. By telling some stories.
B. By listing some numbers.
C. By giving some examples.
D. By answering some questions.
解析: 细节理解题。根据第三、四段内容可知,作者主要
通过列数字的方式来说明人工驾驶存在的问题以及无人驾驶汽

34. How many people’s lives would be saved every year if self-driving
vehicles were used?
A. About 0.26 million.
B. About 0.38 million.
C. About 0.75 million.
D. About one million.
解析: 推理判断题。第三段指出,每年(全球)死于交通事故

Every year in November, people look for bargains on Black
Friday. But did you know that the same day is also Buy Nothing Day?
Black Friday is the day after the American holiday of Thanksgiving,
which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. 36 Over the
last 20 years, big retailers have started to offer discounts and bargains on
this day, and it has become more and more popular.Last year, people in
the USA spent an estimated $54.7 billion between Black Friday and Cyber

billion.

Black Friday encourage people to buy things that they don’t really need
and can’t afford. 38 It is easy to find video online of customers
physically fighting each other over bargains.
39 Since 1997, Buy Nothing Day has been held on the same
day as Black Friday. The rules are simple.Just don’t buy anything at all for
24 hours. 40 The aim is to make people think more about their
spending and to make better decisions about what they buy and where they
buy it from.

B. Each country has its own shopping festival.
C. Many people are surprised how difficult this actually is.
D. The idea of Black Friday has also spread around the world.

others, whether animals or humans. For example, he is always keeping
water in a large basin in his yard for watering the birds and other animals.
One noon, he was playing on the grass in a bushy garden after
school. He enjoyed the chirping (叽喳叫) birds, colourful butterflies,
and two squirrels playing on the coconut trees. It was their own free
kingdom, and Joy felt like an outsider. He decided to give them space to
enjoy freely.
So he found an open grass and lay down, feeling like sunbathing on
a greeny beach.Under the hot sun, Joy covered the eyes with his soft
palms (手掌).His mind flew and thought about his class teacher Miss
Shyla’s homework task — to do a good deed every day.
Joy stretched out his hands, fed the squirrel some crazy biscuits
and played with it.He felt the tiny eyes of a squirrel upon him.And just
then, Joy saw a big rat spying on him from a hole.Upon seeing the big
rat, Joy rose to his feet before it silently moving and running towards the
hole. Finally, he failed to find the rat and the rat hid into its hole.Joy lay
down again.
As he enjoyed the greeny beach and the sight of the blue sky, he
couldn’t help but thought, “What a wonderful and blessed world it is!
We humans should allow the animals to live as they wished.”
Suddenly, a tiny bird fell to the ground before his eyes. The bird
shook several times and then lost consciousness (知觉).Joy jumped up
and tried his best to wake the bird up, but failed. He thought the bird had
