In my life everything was going well until the time I married. I had always been a very optimistic person and I always believed that I could overcome any challenge or win any person’s heart with my perseverance. But unfortunately my marriage failed, and that defeat hit me very hard. I went through a very difficult period of time when I had to decide to move house and I couldn’t help complaining that life was so cruel to me. I started losing my faith in life and decided to quit completely and withdraw myself from society.
But somewhere inside, I had a deep feeling of serving needy people. That was because in childhood I was inspired by Mother Teresa and the work she was doing. So after three months of suffering, I decided to do community service every weekend to divert my attention. I joined a non-profit organization I used to support financially in my early career.
I was given a project to teach poor children in the suburbs. I started that activity and on the first day when I reached the location, I walked inside a remote village. There I could see people living in very difficult conditions. They had no access to electricity and they lacked proper road connectivity. But they still enjoyed their lives and lived happily with their surroundings.
My interactions with the kids and parents have taught me valuable lessons about learning to celebrate daily gifts of life. Since that project, I have never looked back. I have met some wonderful and beautiful souls in this journey and they have made me believe that we are making changes and touching the lives of many people.

In recent years advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have brought both excitement and concerns to various fields. One area where AI is making a profound impact is the medical field, particularly in the domain of diagnostics.
AI-powered diagnostic systems leverage deep learning algorithms to analyze medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. These algorithms can detect subtle patterns and anomalies that might be missed by human radiologists, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses.
However, the integration of AI in medical diagnostics raises complex ethical questions. For instance, who should be held responsible if an AI system misdiagnoses a patient’s condition Should AI algorithms be treated as medical professionals, with legal and liability implications These questions become even more intricate when considering that AI systems learn from vast datasets of medical information, which might contain biases or inaccuracies.
Furthermore, the adoption of AI diagnostics could impact the role of healthcare professionals. Some argue that AI could enhance doctors’ capabilities by providing them with additional insights, while others fear that it might replace human expertise, leading to job losses and a potential decrease in the quality of patient care. Despite these challenges, advocates of AI diagnostics emphasize its potential to improve healthcare accessibility, especially in underserved regions where there is a shortage of skilled medical professionals. AI-powered diagnostics could provide preliminary assessments and recommendations, helping to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers.
8. What is the primary advantage of AI-powered diagnostic systems in the medical field
A. They analyze medical images using deep learning algorithms.
B. They provide additional insights to doctors.
C. They replace the need for human radiologists.
D. They focus on detecting visible patterns in medical images.
9. What is a potential ethical concern regarding AI in medical diagnostics
A. The potential for AI algorithms to replace human doctors.
B. The legal responsibility for misdiagnoses made by AI systems.
C. The reliability of AI algorithms in analyzing medical images.
D. The biased data used for training AI algorithms.
10. How might the integration of AI diagnostics impact healthcare professionals
A. AI could enhance doctors’ expertise and skills.
B. AI could decrease the quality of patient care.
C. AI could replace human doctors completely.
D. AI could lead to job losses in the medical field.
11. What potential benefit of AI diagnostics is highlighted in the text
A. AI diagnostics could bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility.
B. AI diagnostics could decrease the quality of patient care.
C AI diagnostics could primarily serve regions with sufficient medical professionals.
D. AI diagnostics could replace the need for skilled radiologists.
D
You probably know the feeling of having a hearty meal at a restaurant, full and satisfied, but only take a look at the dessert menu and you decide the cheesecake looks just irresistible. Why do you somehow make an exception for a sweet treat, since you are too full to have another bite Thanks to a recent study, scientists now have a better understanding of the origins of this urge.
Working with mice, researchers tried to set up a situation similar to the human experience described above. They started by offering a standard diet to mice who hadn’t eaten since the previous day. That “meal” period lasted for 90 minutes, and the mice ate until they couldn’t eat any more. Then it was time for a 30-minute “dessert” period. In the first round of the experiment, researchers offered mice extra regular food for dessert, and the mice ate just a little bit more. In the second round, during the “dessert” period, they offered a high-sugar feed to the mice for 30 minutes. The mice really went for the sugary feed, consuming six times more calories than in the first round.
In the mice, researchers monitored the activity of neurons (神经元) that are associated with feelings of fullness. They found that when the mice were eating the high sugar diet, the neurons released a chemical which was related to pleasure sensors in their brain and caused a feeling of reward, making the mice keep eating. When the team blocked the release of the chemical, the mice stayed away from the sugar. The researchers found the same went for humans when scanning the brains of volunteers, who were fed sugar drinks. This led the scientists to conclude that the neuron action in the human brain drives the consumption of high-sugar foods.
Researchers say the follow-up studies on this neural reward system could throw light on how sugar overconsumption may contribute to the development of obesity.
12. Why did the researchers carry out the study
A. To test new diets for mice B. To improve dessert quality.
C. To help people eat healthily. D. To explain the urge for sweets.
13. What does Paragraph 2 tell us about the research
A. The process. B. The result C. The basis. D. The subject.
14. What may lead to humans’ sugar overconsumption
A. The feeling of being full. B. The blocking of certain neurons.
C. The release of a chemical. D. The presence of pleasure sensors.
15. What is the best title for this passage
A. What Makes Mice Prefer Sugar B. Why There’s Always Room for Sugar
C. How We Resist the Temptation of Sugar D. Whether Consuming Sugar Causes Obesity

In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John’s face lit up.

Be the Best Version of Yourself
Good afternoon, everyone. The topic of my speech today is “be the best version of yourself”.
It’s true that we live in a world where competition is everywhere and we are struggling to be better than others. However, there is no point in comparing ourselves with others because everyone is unique. In fact, we just need to be ourselves. We must, firstly, hold the belief that we are the creators of our own destiny. In other words, we should take full responsibility for whatever we do. More importantly, we need to make constant effort to become better and stronger each day in every possible way.
That’s all. Thanks for your attention.
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】 Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money. Hastily, he bought paper and pens for painting, and then dashed to the completion. After signing up for it, he was given the task. It was his time. He was deeply absorbed in his work, forgetting everything around him. After finishing his task, he went home, with birds singing for him. Every day, he looked forward to the result happily and anxiously, though he felt hungry. It seemed that the time stopped.
A week later, a phone call came to John’s home. Hearing what the man said, his mother felt puzzled, not knowing how his son had done it, because she knew it needed money. As soon as John arrived home, his mother told him the news, and waited for his explanation. Knowing the truth, her eyes welled up with tears. Hugging her son tightly, she apologized to him. But he was happy, not only because he had got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire, but also he was awarded a lot of money because of his work.
