Welcome to Brown Summer Reading!
Brown High School has an independent reading program every summer. To that end, we offer you our summer reading program. You can see the introductions to reading clubs on this page and click different links to see more detailed information.
Every student must join at least one book club this summer.

Club 3: For students who like reading pieces of writing that express emotions, experiences, and ideas, especially in short lines using words that have the same last sound.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen, you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common worry with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are possibly worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbor's home. He had just parked around the comer from his own house when he got a call from his daughter: "The house next door is on fire!" He went to look. That's when he saw an old woman crying outside.
"The baby's in there!" she cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, ran inside without hesitation. Entering the burning house was like "running into a bucket of black paint," Surrell says. The thick smoke burned his eyes and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who had lung disease, they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke - filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. "Where is Tiara " he asked desperately.
“The second floor," the old woman shouted back.
Taking a deep breath, Surrell went in a second time. Because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor.
“Baby girl, where are you ”
His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed fire instead of the smoke in the air. He couldn't open his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling (破裂声)of burning wood. Then a soft sound came out. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor and climbed toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.
Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled the baby toward him. Her body was weak and she wasn't breathing. He carried her into his arms and ran blindly into the blackness. The next thing he knew, he was at the front door, then outside.
8. Why was the old woman crying outside
A. She lost the baby in the fire.
B. The baby was hurt in the fire.
C. The baby was in the burning house.
D. She couldn't call the fire department.
9. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs
A. Surrell's daughter worked in a fire department.
B. Surrell would probably have been killed by the fire.
C. The smoke blanketed Surrell' s house from next door.
D. A bucket of black paint blocked Surrell's way to the house.
10. How did Surrell find the baby on the second floor
A. By searching on his knees.
B. By opening the back door.
C. By shouting repeatedly'
D. By turning on the light.
11. Which of the following best describes Surrell
A. Determined and patient.
B. Independent and devoted.
C. Generous and reliable.
D. Courageous and caring.
D
What kind of relationship do you think will provide you with more life satisfaction, better health and overall well-being A romantic relationship A familial (家庭的) one Surprisingly, the answer is friendship.
However, it’s not possible to have true friends without first making regular friends. Have you ever thought about how long it takes to turn an acquaintance (认识的人) into a true friend
Well, a study published in the April issue of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships might have the answer to that question. According to lead study author Jeffrey Hall, a communications professor at the University of Kansas in the US, we need to spend at least 80 hours with another person to create a true friendship with them.
Hall surveyed two groups as they began new chapters in their lives. One group consisted of 429 adults who had recently relocated (搬家), while the other was made up of 112 freshmen from the University of Kansas.
The results showed that the more time each person spent together, the faster friendship formed in both groups. But it seemed that Hall wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to find out exactly how many hours it takes to form a friendship.
According to the survey, “casual” friends are generally formed after spending about 30 hours together. And people will go from casual friends to regular friends after another 50 hours.
However, it takes a lot longer to get really close to someone: A “close” friendship takes about 140 hours to create and “best friends” need about 300 hours.
But spending time together isn’t the only factor (元素) when it comes to making friends. “It’s not enough to just be in the company of someone… it matters how you spend the time,” Hall told the Daily Mail.
For one thing, as Hall noted, the way we communicate matters. “Catching up, joking around and having meaningful conversation promote intimacy (亲密) and closeness, while small talk actually decreases closeness in the relationship,” he said.
And since time is precious, Hall suggested taking advantage of our school years by making as many friends as we can.
Hall’s relationship tips:
·Watch a TV series together
·Share jokes and laughter
·Have long, meaningful conversations
·Watch a movie together
·Engage (参与) in friendly competition by playing video games
12. What is the article mainly about
A. Factors that influence the forming of a friendship.
B. How people’s personality influences the time it takes to make friends.
C. The role that friendship plays in our life.
D. The necessity to make true friends in modern society.
13. What similarity do the two groups of people in Hall’s survey share
A. They are of the same age.
B. They are good at making friends.
C. They study at the same university.
D. They just moved to a new environment.
14. How many hours will people need to make a close friend, according to Hall’s survey
A. About 30 hours. B. About 50 hours.
C. About 80 hours. D. About 140 hours.
15. What does Hall think helps people develop a closer friendship
A. Joking around with their friend.
