My Best Friend Dan
Walking home from school one day, I saw Dan, a kid from my school, on the other side of the road. I said to myself, “He must be a real nerd (呆子),” as he was carrying a lot of books. When I continued walking, I saw some kids run into Dan, knocking his books out of his arms and he fell over. I ran over to help him, and as we were picking up his books, I saw tears in his eyes.
While I helped him stand up, he looked at me and said, “Thank you so much.” There was a grateful smile on his face.
We started talking and soon realized that we lived near each other. We talked all the way home. Dan turned out to be a pretty cool kid. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Dan, the more I liked him. Dan and I became best friends.
Over the years in middle school, he became more popular. In our last year, Dan got the best grades in our class, and was asked to give a speech for graduation.
As Dan started his speech, he looked at me. “Graduation is a time to thank the people who helped you survive those difficult years—your parents, your teachers, but mostly your friends. Being a friend is the best gift you can give. I’m going to tell you a story…”
I just looked at Dan in amazement as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to talk to his teachers about leaving this school and going to a different one. Dan talked of how he had emptied his desk so his mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying all of his books home. He looked at me and gave me a smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from making a huge mistake.” Everyone was surprised as he told us about his weakest moment.

B. He needed to study for an important exam the next day.
C. He had emptied his desk to avoid his mother doing it later.

25. What happened to Dan in the last year of middle school
A. He made a huge mistake.
B. He got the best grades in his class.
C. He experienced a difficult year.
D. He turned out to be a weak kid.
26. What does the writer want to tell us
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Kindness is the sunshine of life.
D. Failure is the mother of success.

The Spotlight Effect
Have you ever felt as if the whole world was watching while you made a mistake Well, that is because of “the spotlight effect”. Here’s some good news — it’s likely that no one even noticed.
The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do. We experience the spotlight effect not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well. Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do, we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day, or give a terrible answer in class. It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date, or do a good deed. In these moments, it feels like everyone is watching.
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes. Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance. We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However, in some cases, it can lead to extreme social anxiety(焦虑) and nervousness around other people. Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It’s normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people. However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to deal with. If someone is so nervous that they can’t make good decisions, then it’s time to take action and improve the situation.
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety. The next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it’s just your mind playing tricks on you. Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself. If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family, it will help you be less self- conscious(难为情的).
27. The spotlight effect can make us believe that ________.
A. everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety
B. people notice us more often than they really do
C. no one actually noticed us while we made a mistake
D. we can do something that is little different from others
28. What do you know about the spotlight effect from the passage
A. It makes everyone watch. B. It makes people feel more confident.
C. It doesn’t happen when we perform well. D. It makes people observe very little about others.
29. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The reasons why we need to reduce our anxiety.
B. The importance of learning about the spotlight effect.
C. The suggestions on how to learn about the spotlight effect.
D. The ways to reduce our anxiety caused by the spotlight effect.
D
How Much Can We Afford to Forget
In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time memorizing facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can access (获得) knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads
Civilizations(文明)develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural(农业的)Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines give us access to most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter
Researchers have recognized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases(偏见),and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the case of accessing information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief-the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence, we have easy access to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our well-being(健康)depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we gradually but unquestionably become strangers to future people.
30. ·Why are smart machines likely to increase our biases
A. Because they go off course in testing and scoring.
B. Because we control the training process on them.
C. Because we offer them too much information.
D. Because they overuse the provided answers.
31. The case of accessing information from the Internet ·
A. frees us from making efforts to learn new skills
B. . prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C. misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge
D. separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
32. The word "collapse" in Paragraph 5 probably means‘‘—,,·
A. a sudden failure B. the basic rule
C. a disappointing start D. the gradual development
33. What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage
A. To question about the standards of information storage.
B. To discuss our problems of communication with machines.
C. To stress the importance of improving our memorizing ability.
D. To remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember.

Why Is Tai Ji the Perfect Exercise
While it is easy to tell people to make exercise part of their daily routine, it is not so easy to tell them what to do. Some people like to run or climb mountains, but if you care for your body with less hurt, Tai Ji is the perfect exercise. Its goal is to improve strength and balance.
There are several styles of Tai Ji, but most of them start with a set of controlled movements. There are many good how-to books to get you started, or you can choose from classes offered at health clubs. Either way, you can move at your own pace.
Practitioners praise Tai Ji’s benefits, but what has attracted the attention of Western scientists lately is what Tai Ji does for the body. In many ways, researchers are just catching up to millions of people in China and Chinatowns around the rest of the world, who have already known about Tai Ji. Scientists at the Oregon Research Institute reported that Tai Ji offers the greatest benefit to older people who are healthy but relatively inactive. Studies have shown that practising Tai Ji regularly helps reduce(减少) falls among healthy old people. The next step, from a scientific point of view, is to decide whether Tai Ji can help those who are already weak.
It can take a few months for the effects of Tai Ji to kick in, but when they do they can act as a gateway to a new lifestyle. “Once people start feeling better, they often become more active in their daily life,” says Dr. Karim Khan, a sports scientist at the University of British Columbia.
Any form of exercise, of course, can do only so much. “For older people, Tai Ji will not be the end-all,” says William Haskell, an expert at Stanford University. “But a good way is to practise Tai Ji plus walking. Younger people probably need more challenges, but they can benefit from Tai Ji to reduce stress.”
The best thing about Tai Ji is that people enjoy it, so they can stick with it long enough to get some benefits. It helps when something that’s good for you is also fun.

38. 例文
Dear Peter,
I am excited to hear that you are organizing activities for School Environmental Protection Day. Here are some creative ideas that might inspire you:
First, you could organize a speech competition where students share their thoughts on environmental issues. This would raise awareness and encourage deep thinking about sustainability.
Second, why not hold a poster design contest Students can create artwork with eco-friendly messages, and the best posters could be displayed around the school. This is a fun and visual way to spread the message.
Another great activity is a recycling drive. Encourage students to donate old books, clothes, or electronics. The collected items can be given to those in need or recycled properly. This not only helps the environment but also teaches responsibility.
Finally, a tree-planting event would be meaningful. It’s a hands-on way for students to contribute to a greener campus.
I do hope that my suggestions will be helpful.
