I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort. One can assume that I didn’t own many old books. I had merely a few here and there that my parents had gifted me, but nothing too special.
In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics. Just then, I found my parents’ old copies of the entire Harry Potter book series. Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books. However, I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that if I wanted to read the series, I would have to read my parents’ copies. And so began the terrible journey of reading seven old books.
When it was time for me to read the final copy, I was kind of a changed woman. I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. By the end, I had devoted the entire Harry Potter bookshelf in my room.
Now, I love old books. While the covers are sometimes so worn down that you can barely read the title of the book, you can understand what it’s about anyway. After all, an old book is a representation of generations of readers who have chosen to live in a specific fictional world because the story it contains is just that good. Old books have meaning and I love how much they mean to me now.
24. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs
A. She was on bad terms with her parents.
B. She felt uneasy about reading old books.
C. She grew fondness for reading classics.
D. She was often gifted old books by her parents.
25. How did the author feel when seeing her parents’ Harry Potter series in the fourth grade
A. Confused. B. Pleased. C. Astonished. D. Discouraged.
26. What does the author mean by saying “I was kind of a changed woman” in paragraph 3
A. She began to ignore the appearance of the books.
B. She started to enjoy reading fictional books.
C. She accepted putting old books on her shelf.
D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read.
27. What is the best title of the text
A. My Passion for Reading.
B. My Connection With Parents via Old Books.
C. My Journey With Old Books.
D. My Encounter With the Harry Potter Series.
C
When parents discover their children have lied to them for the first time, it can often come as a shock to find their little treasures are capable of such a trick. But new research has suggested many parents may not even notice many of the lies their children tell them.
Psychologists have discovered that most parents are over-confident in their children’s honesty and this may impair their ability to discover a lie. The findings may help to explain why some parents seem to be willing to let their children get away with almost anything even in the face of the evidence. They say parents suffer from a “truth bias (偏见)” with their own youngsters, but when faced with lies from other people’s children, they have less difficulty telling if a statement is true or not.
Dr Angela Evans, a psychologist at Brock University in Canada, said, “The close relationship that parents share with their own children may lead to parents failing to discover their children’s lies. Parents’ truth bias may result in parents being less suspicious (怀疑的) of their children, allowing them to successfully cheat them.”
Most children are thought to start lying as early as two years old but start telling more believable lies at around the age of four years old. Learning how to lie is considered as a key part of cognitive(认知的) and social development in children. But many parents are shocked when their children start lying to them.
In their study, Dr Evans and her colleagues filmed 108 children aged between 8 and 16 as they performed a test after being asked not to look at the answers. They were then asked afterwards if they had looked, with 50 truthfully denying looking, 49 lying about looking and 9 admitting to looking. Videos of those denying looking were then shown to 152 parents of children aged 8 to 16, 80 of whom had children who had taken part in the test. The researchers found that the parents were less able to spot lies told by their own children than by other people’s children.
28. What does the underlined word “impair” in Paragraph 2 mean ________
A. Show. B. Damage. C. Develop. D. Recognize.
29. When lying to their parents, children can’t be easily found because________.
A. their parents are too trusting their children
B. their parents pretend not to see the lies
C. they are very good at hiding their lies
D. they know how to lie to their parents
30. What does Dr Evans want to find about children’s lying________
A. What makes parents lose trust in their children.
B. What causes children to tell lies to their parents.
C. What makes parents fail to see their children’s lies.
D. What affects children’s relations with their parents.
31. What can be inferred from Dr Evans’s study in the last two paragraphs
A. Parents tend to protect their own children.
B. Lying is a part of children’s development.
C. Children aged 8 to 16 are very likely to tell lies.
D. Parents can easily judge lies told by children of others.
D
According to official government figures, there are more than twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia, and many Australians consider them dangerous. It is reported that kangaroos are involved in more than 80 percent of the 20,000 vehicle-animal accidents each year. In the country’s under-populated region, the common belief is that kangaroo numbers have rocketed to “pandemic (大规模流行的) percentage”.
It is believed that killing kangaroos is critical to boosting the economy. Meat, skins and leather from kangaroos have been sold to 56 countries. Global brands such as Nike, Puma and Adidas buy strong, soft “k-leather” to make athletic products. And kangaroo meat is finding its way into more and more grocery stores.
Advocates point out that low-fat, high-protein kangaroo meat is more environmentally friendly than greenhouse gas-releasing sheep and cattle. John Kelly, former executive director of the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia, says, “Harvesting our food from animals adapted to Australia’s environment is extremely wise and sustainable. Many ecologists will tell you that there is no more humane way of producing red meat.”
Opponents of the industry call the killing inhumane, unsustainable and unnecessary. Dwayne Bannon-Harrison, a member of the Yuin people of New South Wales, says the idea that kangaroos are destroying the country is laughable. “They’ve been walking in this land a lot longer than people have,” he says. “How could something that’s been here for thousands of years be ‘destroying’ the country I don’t understand the logic in that.”
Can Australians’ disagreement on kangaroos be solved George Wilson, a professor from Australian National University, says that if kangaroos were privately owned, then graziers (放牧人) would protect the animals, treating them as possessions (财产). They could feed them, lease them, breed them and charge hunters a fee for access. “If you want to protect something,” Wilson says, “you have to give it a value. Animals that are considered dangerous don’t have value.” If kangaroos were more valuable than cattle or sheep, landholders would work with the kangaroo industry on branding, marketing and quality control. The government’s role would be oversight and regulation.
32. What do we know from the article
A. Kangaroos are to blame for most accidents.
B. Global brands make small profits on kangaroos.
C. Kangaroos are relatively friendly to the environment.
D. Over-populated kangaroos are doing great harm to the country’s economy.
33. Why does Dwayne Bannon disagree to kill kangaroos
A. Because it is laughable. B. Because it is destroying the country.
C. Because they have existed on Earth longer than man. D. Because they live in harmony with people.
34. Which of the following might be the benefit of privatization (私有化)
A The popularity of kangaroo hunting. B. The reduction in the number of kangaroos.
C. The establishment of more conservation areas. D. The better management of the kangaroo industry.
35. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To argue against the killing of kangaroos.
B. To provide a solution to the problem caused by kangaroos.
C. To present different opinions on the kangaroo industry.
D. To stress the importance of protecting kangaroos.

One day, while returning from work, a man who looked like a wealthy person coming from the city stopped his rickshaw. He quickly told Ashwin the place he wanted to visit. His car had broken down and he desperately needed to get to the mentioned address urgently. After an uneventful ride, they reached the destination, and the passenger paid the fare.
Ashwin, on returning home, found to his surprise that his passenger just then had dropped a small bag in his rickshaw. On opening it, he found 50 gold coins in it. He showed it to his family who couldn’t believe their luck. His wife said with joy, “Thank goodness. Now we find a solution to our problems.”
That night, Ashwin couldn’t sleep. His conscience(良心) kept troubling him. At the crack of dawn, he woke his wife up. He said, “Lalita, I think it’s wrong to keep someone else’s gold coins. 【原文】M: Hello everyone! As you all know, every year the student union organizes a trip for the senior class. This year is no different! @Our first major decision was to choose when we would go. Even though l know quite a few of you suggested taking the trip in the spring, we decided that a winter trip would be best. @The reason is that we were worried that a spring trip would compete with the end-of-year exam period. It is important that we all do well on the exams. Those of you that would like to attend the trip must contact James Plymouth. He is the one responsible for trip bookings. Seats are limited, so it is wise not to wait until last minute. I am aware that last year many students were left out of their spring trip because they didn’t express interest early enough. @For those of you that attend, a form must be signed by a parent. Also, concerning accommodation, you can decide among yourselves who you want to stay with and whether you prefer a single or double room. I think that just about covers it. Hope we have a great time!

Long, long ago, in a little village lived a humble(谦虚的) man named Ashwin. He went about making ends meet by pulling a rickshaw(人力 车) and transporting passengers from one destination to another. Times were hard and he had to take the responsibility for supporting his family.
I am going to search for the man and hand over the coins to him.” Lalita was shocked and cried, but Ashwin stuck to his word. He tried hard to find the man, but nothing seemed to work.
Eventually when he was about to give up, he saw that wealthy passenger. Ashwin ran to him and thrust(塞) the bag in his hand, “Sir, you left this bag in my rickshaw. I have been looking for you since then and I am so relieved to find you. Please take this,” he said.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The man was surprised. He was touched by Ashwin’s conscience and said he wanted to meet his family. Ashwin took the man home and introduced him to his family. The man looked at the poor condition of Ashwin’s house and his children and told Ashwin that he would like to help his family. Ashwin refused, but the man was insistent and said, “I would like to take the responsibility for educating your children.” Ashwin could not refuse the assistance since he wanted the children to become someone important. He agreed to send them to the city.
Paragraph 2:
Ashwin’s children then got educated and did well. Each vacation they went home to visit their parents. Ashwin often reminded them, “Never do anything at the cost of someone else.” The children remembered the advice and followed it. Years later, they became successful. When the poor man’s children had children of their own, they often told them the story about the small bag with 50 gold coins.
