“Yup. Still tapping up and down.” I do a little soft shoe dancing for emphasis. “Just like Shirley Temple and Bill Whatzisname in that musical years ago.”
They shake their heads. Same old question, same old response. They’ve been joking with us about our hardwood stairs ever since we bought this old farmhouse 50 years ago.
There were three flights, one from the main floor bending to the second, a narrow flight to the third－floor rooms, and narrow stairs down to the basement. The stairs didn’t seem a problem when we moved in. We were younger, livelier and ran up and down many times a day without concern. Though as we grew older, carrying a load of freshly washed clothes from the basement to the third floor could be tiring and we’d have to pause to catch our breath on the landings.
Our daughter brought a friend over to meet the “old folks at home” and on his very first visit he looked up at the stairs and said, “These could be dangerous. Like rolling into a gas station during a road trip, whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop during their migrations of thousands of kilometers across the oceans. The human-made structures attract marine life — including the sharks’ favorite snack: plankton (浮游生物). But experts worry that this attraction could put the endangered giant creatures at risk of ship strike or chemical pollution.
Satellite tracking of whale sharks off the coast of western Australia shows how oil and gas platforms influence the movements of these gentle giants, marine ecologist Ben D’ Antonio, of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and University of Western Australia, and colleagues reported on January 18.
“Think of seafloor features like a truck stop on a highway,” D’ Antonio says. “On a family vacation, we often pull into truck stops to fuel up and grab a quick bite before heading to our final destination. Whale sharks seem to be using seafloor features in a similar way.”
Over 14 years, the researchers tagged 78 whale sharks, tracked their movements and cross-checked the location of landform characteristics to see how these affect the sharks’ routes. While natural canyons and seamounts also act as brief stops, this attraction towards oil platforms — possibly enhanced by plankton’s attraction to the platforms’ rays of light — could put the huge animals at risk of being hit by a ship or pollution from oil spills or discharges. It’s impossible to know exactly how many are being killed by ships because their bodies sink without a sign.
The researchers hope this finding will help decision makers managing marine protected areas and raise awareness of the potential impact on marine life when human-made platforms are disused or new structures are built. “This will become more relevant as developments for renewable energy begin to add additional structure to many coastal areas,” D’ Antonio says.

In the risky world of nuclear arms control, Princeton student Lepowsky is exploring how robots can make inspections more accurate and acceptable to host nations worried about invasive (侵入的) traditional methods. His latest research has led to a robot performing inspections without saving sensitive information.
“The host nation likely won’t want a human inspector poking their nose around,” said Lepowsky. “But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data.” The goal is to have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.
The new prototype (样机) is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform, an educational robot. Robots offer advantages over human inspectors:they can tolerate higher radiation levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details. The idea for the robot started with Lepowsky’s adviser, Glaser, who was curious about creating a “forgetful robot” that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea: “Rather than forgetting, we’re not even remembering in the first place,” Lepowsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.
Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work — drawing on both his robotics and policy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth. He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and nuclear nonproliferation (防扩散).
Predicting when the robot might be used in the field is difficult. “It’s easy to say, today, it’s not very realistic, but you have to be ready for if and when it becomes possible,” said Lepowsky. “Are you still climbing all those stairs ” The question comes after friends say, “You’re looking good,” considerately not adding, “for your age.”
“Yup. Still tapping up and down.” I do a little soft shoe dancing for emphasis. “Just like Shirley Temple and Bill Whatzisname in that musical years ago.”
They shake their heads. Same old question, same old response. They’ve been joking with us about our hardwood stairs ever since we bought this old farmhouse 50 years ago.
There were three flights, one from the main floor bending to the second, a narrow flight to the third－floor rooms, and narrow stairs down to the basement. The stairs didn’t seem a problem when we moved in. We were younger, livelier and ran up and down many times a day without concern. Like rolling into a gas station during a road trip, whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop during their migrations of thousands of kilometers across the oceans. The human-made structures attract marine life — including the sharks’ favorite snack: plankton (浮游生物). But experts worry that this attraction could put the endangered giant creatures at risk of ship strike or chemical pollution.
Satellite tracking of whale sharks off the coast of western Australia shows how oil and gas platforms influence the movements of these gentle giants, marine ecologist Ben D’ Antonio, of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and University of Western Australia, and colleagues reported on January 18.
“Think of seafloor features like a truck stop on a highway,” D’ Antonio says. “On a family vacation, we often pull into truck stops to fuel up and grab a quick bite before heading to our final destination. Whale sharks seem to be using seafloor features in a similar way.”
Over 14 years, the researchers tagged 78 whale sharks, tracked their movements and cross-checked the location of landform characteristics to see how these affect the sharks’ routes. While natural canyons and seamounts also act as brief stops, this attraction towards oil platforms — possibly enhanced by plankton’s attraction to the platforms’ rays of light — could put the huge animals at risk of being hit by a ship or pollution from oil spills or discharges. It’s impossible to know exactly how many are being killed by ships because their bodies sink without a sign.
The researchers hope this finding will help decision makers managing marine protected areas and raise awareness of the potential impact on marine life when human-made platforms are disused or new structures are built. “This will become more relevant as developments for renewable energy begin to add additional structure to many coastal areas,” D’ Antonio says.

In the risky world of nuclear arms control, Princeton student Lepowsky is exploring how robots can make inspections more accurate and acceptable to host nations worried about invasive (侵入的) traditional methods. His latest research has led to a robot performing inspections without saving sensitive information.
“The host nation likely won’t want a human inspector poking their nose around,” said Lepowsky. “But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data.” The goal is to have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.
The new prototype (样机) is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform, an educational robot. Robots offer advantages over human inspectors:they can tolerate higher radiation levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details. The idea for the robot started with Lepowsky’s adviser, Glaser, who was curious about creating a “forgetful robot” that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea: “Rather than forgetting, we’re not even remembering in the first place,” Lepowsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.
Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work — drawing on both his robotics and policy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth. He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and nuclear nonproliferation (防扩散).
Predicting when the robot might be used in the field is difficult. “It’s easy to say, today, it’s not very realistic, but you have to be ready for if and when it becomes possible,” said Lepowsky.
