When I was anxious about something, she’d say, “You’ll cross that bridge when you come to it.” When I was a kid, my mom would dress my hair, and it was always knotty and it always hurt, and she’d say, “Beauty feels no pain.”
Six years into my marriage, my mom wished me a happy anniversary. And then she said, “You know, Sarah, the seventh year is always the hardest. It’s the seven- year itch (痒) .”
“Mom, that’s a movie, not a real thing,” I said.
But she believed it was true. She said her hardest year with my dad was the seventh year. And only later did I realize that I was born around the seventh year of their marriage. Four months after she cursed (诅咒) me with the movie, I was asking for a divorce.
For my mom’s birthday the next year, I got her a sticker that says “It is what it is.” I got it as a joke because it’s the most common and overused phrase. I thought she’d laugh. Instead, she loved it. She hung it above the mirror in the hallway next to the bathroom.

Have you ever wondered why creative people seem to spot things that others miss Whether it’s an inventor who finds a creative solution to a familiar problem or an artist who paints a landscape in a fresh way, many creative people have a special ability to find something meaningful even in the dull life. Research suggests this is just because the differences in the way someone’s brain deals with information might actually fuel creative thinking.
My work explores the ways in which creative people prioritise (给予优先权) information differently to their less creative workmates. In one of our studies, my research team and I used a classic task to see how the brain reacts to another type of high priority information: surprising information. Participants listened to mostly repetitive auditory (听觉的) tones, while their brain activity was recorded with an electroencephalogram (脑电图) . Typically, people’s brains react to the rare shocking sounds with a clear peak in neural activity, known as the P300, which shows surprise. But for creative people We find this peak is less pronounced.
In other words, it seems that creative people don’t see unusual information as quite so unusual. This may offer a big advantage for creative thinking because it is unclear what’s typical or what’s not, allowing unusual ideas to be considered — and making sure that the most clear parts of a problem do not take up all the attention. The idea that creativity and attention are connected isn’t new.
Research has long shown connections between creativity and different types of attention. Our research is suggesting that these differences in attention may come down to the ways in which our brains deal with data. This is the process by which new data is unknowingly given importance, making certain information stand out from the rest. This process is closely tied to attention but also plays a major role in encouraging thoughts and actions in reaction to important information. This encouraging aspect seems to be key to understanding how the process will support creative thinking.
8. What can we learn about creative people from the first paragraph
A. They always deal with simple problems. B. They can create something in a new way.
C. They have a special ability to see things. D. They come up with new ideas by chance.
9. What are ordinary people like when listening to the rare shocking sounds
A. Confused. B. Delighted. C. Surprised. D. Ashamed.
10. How do creative people deal with unusual information
A. They pay more attention to it. B. They think it more important.
C. They see it as something new. D. They consider it to be normal.
11. What is possibly the best title for the text
A. Why creativity is picking up on what others miss out
B. How men around you are more imaginative than you
C. What you can get while processing some information
D. Why attention is never important to creative thinking
D
A group of international scientists recently announced they had made a map of the whole “brain” of an adult fruit fly. They said the milestone would provide new knowledge about the brains of all animals including humans.
The research gives details of more than 50 million connections between 139, 000 neurons (神经元) , which are nerve cells in the brain of the fruit fly. The scientific name of the animal is Drosophila melanogaster. It is often used in scientific experiments, especially studies of nerve cells. The researchers wanted to find out exactly how the brain cells operate when they are healthy and normal.
Sebastian Seung was one of the leaders of the research, which was published as a series of studies in Nature. Seung is a professor at Princeton University in New Jersey. He said, “You might be asking why we should care about the brain of a fruit fly. My simple answer is that if we can truly understand how any brain functions, it’s sure to tell us something about all brains.”
The brain of a fruit fly is small — less than one millimeter wide. But some scientists are very interested in it. “It’s beautiful,” said Cambridge researcher Gregory Jefferis. The researchers created what they called a “wiring diagram” of an adult fruit fly. It was also called a “nerve cell connections” map.
The goal was to create a map that shows how neurons connect to one another and how they operate. Similar research has been done with simpler forms of life. For example, scientists have mapped the “brain” of a worm which is very tiny and common. They have also mapped the neural material of the larval (幼虫的) form of the fruit fly. But the adult fruit fly was more complex. The idea was to link the neural connections to the behavior of the animal.
Mala Murthy was another co-leader of the research from Princeton. Murthy said, “One of the major questions we’re addressing is how the wiring in the brain, its neurons and connections, can give rise to animal behavior.”
12. What is the milestone mentioned in Paragraph 1 aimed at
A. Getting a flying line map of a common fly. B. Providing new knowledge about the brains.
C. Describing all functions of cell connections. D. Telling an adult fruit fly’s brain is complex.
13. What is the attitude of Sebastian Seung to the finding
A. He considers it very important. B. He discovers nothing meaningful.
C. He treats it as something helpless. D. He shows no interest in a fruit fly.
14. How does the author support the topic of the text
A. By explaining concepts. B. By listing some figures.
C. By guessing the results. D. By showing the studies.
15. What does the underlined word “addressing” in the last paragraph mean
A. Giving up. B. Selecting out. C. Dealing with. D. Taking over.

Every time I looked at myself in the mirror I saw a figure that I believed was far from perfect, feeling powerless and hopeless. This situation led to a deep sense of appearance anxiety that had almost ruined my confidence day by day.
In high school, every day I sat in the corner of my classroom, anxious and worried, and I would not say a single word. I had always been known about my appearance. So I guessed nobody would like to chat with me. Their unkind words and rude attitudes cut deep like sharp knives. I would hear their words and laughter that seemed to flood into me. Sometimes, I would find my belongings moved or notes with hurtful words left on my desk, which added to my sadness and made me afraid of talking with others.
My days were filled with sadness and tiredness. I walked through the halls with my head down, trying to avoid looking at their eyes. I would sit alone in class, lost in my own thoughts of self-doubt. My grades began to suffer and I felt that I came into a never-ending cycle of sadness.
My parents loved me very much. After a long day at school I came back home, Mom and Dad would give me a big warm hug, and these simple gestures were a common way they expressed love to me. However, they didn't know what I was worried about, and they didn't understand what the pressure coming from my classmates was. Things were getting worse and worse.
However, everything changed when a new student came to my class. Her name was Molly. Molly entered the room with a bright smile and an air of confidence. At first, I didn't pay much attention to her. I was too consumed by my own troubles. But Molly seemed to notice me and would always greet me with a warm smile and a friendly wave.

【答案】One day, Molly walked to me with a smile on her face. Curious and hesitant, I decided to approach her and chatted with her. Molly asked me what was wrong, and I eventually opened up about my struggles, telling her about my appearance anxiety, the bullying, and how I felt hopeless. She listened carefully, her eyes filled with empathy. She encouraged me to focus on my strengths and not let the opinions of others define me. She also invited me to work out every morning with her.
From that day on, Molly became my only friend. We started spending time together and began our fitness journey. At first, it was just short walks around the school grounds. Then, we started to jo g every morning. Molly was always there to encourage me, cheering me on when I felt like giving up. Looking back, I couldn't believe how far I had come. I knew I still had a long way to go, but with Molly by my side, I was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
