In life, each of us is on a journey to discover who we truly are. It’s a long journey that starts when we’re young and keeps going as we grow.
For middle school students, this journey has just begun. As for me, it started when I first joined the school art club. When I painted, I realised I loved using colours to express my feelings, and this discovery surprised me. From then on, I began to pay attention to understanding myself.
Firstly, understanding our likes and dislikes can help us find the right goals. It’s like a map that guides us. For example, when faced with different choices, if we know our own preferences (偏爱), the choices we make will be different. And every choice we make brings us one step closer to achieving our goals.
Secondly, understanding ourselves helps us get along better with others. If we know our own strengths and weaknesses (优缺点), we can work better as a team. For example, if I know I’m good at listening, I can help my classmates who need to talk about their problems.
In short, the journey of discovering ourselves is long and full of surprises. It helps us grow into our best selves and live a happy, meaningful life. So, let’s keep exploring and enjoying this journey. I’m sure you’ll find some surprises.

If so, you are probably a very determined character. Determination is about moving forward to achieve your goals and not giving up when you meet difficulties. It is the willpower that helps you control yourself and achieve what you want. It is an inner strength (内在力量) that helps us to stay on course and reach our goals, no matter what.
Being determined is a very good quality to have. So how can we become determined
Learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of those around you. Learn to look at the past as training for the future. Use those mistakes as a chance to learn something new.
Don’t be scared of failing. Failures are just stepping stones on the road to success. What you should be scared of is not giving your goal 100% effort. Just think about how you will feel if you give up on it.
Don’t waste time worrying about the things you can’t change. Use your strength and your determination to achieve things that you can control.
Be patient. The road to your goal may be long and arduous at times and you need to make great efforts on the way. Sometimes determination is about being prepared to wait for the right chance, and being ready when it comes up.

The MBTI is a self-report test developed to help people know about their own personality type, strengths, likes and dislikes. It is not used to test your mental (精神的) health. There are no right or wrong answers. No one personality type is the best or the worst.
In recent years, the MBTI has been used in more and more areas. ▲ People take the test and it can help them to learn about what the best jobs are for each MBTI type. For example, ESTPs can easily go into marketing (营销), while ISTPs should become engineers. However, we should know that it is only a guide, and it cannot decide our dream jobs.
The MBTI personality test may show us something we don’t know about ourselves. But we should not take its result too seriously. Who we are is shaped by our thoughts, values and daily behaviours. The result of the test can’t define (定义) who we are.

“Am I an ‘I’ person or an ‘E’ person ” It is a popular topic among young people around China today. Many people are crazy about it so that they take a personality test named Myers-Briggs test to find out the answer.
Many people find the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) useful. It groups people into 16 types, which start with the letter “I” or “E”, such as “ENTJ, INFP” or more. “E” is short for “Extroversion” while “I” is for “Introversion”. “I’m an ‘E’ person. I should go to the party and make more friends.” “I’m an ‘E’ person. I’d like to work by myself. I could be a writer in the future.” They believe different types can help them make decisions for activities, jobs or even life choices more quickly.
But there are also problems. Some people take the test for a second time and get different results. Some people find it hard to answer some questions. “I like watching TV by myself. But I also enjoy playing with friends. Am I an ‘I’ or an ‘E’ ”
When you take a personality test, you may think, “Oh, that’s me.” That’s because the descriptions (描述) are generic. They can be used to describe many people. Research has found that over 50 percent of people get a different score when they retook the MBTI just five weeks later. Personalities can change with time, and they are not black-or-white, scientists say. You may be introverted now but become extroverted when you get older. Or, you can be both an “I” and an “E”. Don’t label yourself! Studies have also shown that the test is not real at telling people’s success in different jobs. So, don’t take it too seriously.

Development in technology now ties us closer than before. We can call our friends from a thousand kilometers away. We can text. We can talk to each other at the push of a button on WeChat or other social media.
There are, of course, advantages to these modern ways of communicating. However, do we ever think about what we are losing As someone who likes writing and receiving letters, I often feel sad that so few people now give letter writing a fair chance.
While you might call letter writing old-fashioned, I believe we should all write and send letters more often.
To begin with, there’s lots of love in a handwritten letter. This is why texting or calling doesn’t feel as special as letter writing—it is more hurried. These days, we hope to finish everything as quickly as possible. To save time, we often use short sentences.
Handwritten letters, however, deliver much more warmth because we take the time. Writing letters allows us to express to someone how much we care about him or her in a detailed way. So when we receive a letter, we feel we are loved, remembered and missed. Besides, writing a letter can make us feel happy, too. When we sit down and focus on what we are writing, we make ourselves take a break from the stress (压力) of our lives. Moreover, letters can be kept forever. We can always go back and read them again. By keeping a letter, we keep a part of that person and his relationship with us.
Pick up your pen now! Write to your cousins about your school. Let your friends know how much you miss them. Let’s bring back the art of letter writing!

Fu Qianshao, an aircraft expert, said the J-20S has two seats: one for the pilot and one for an operator who controls electronic equipment or helps with attacks.
The J-20A has a bigger spine, a new nose, and better air intakes for its new engine. This engine is more powerful and helps the plane fly better.
The J-35A is another new stealth fighter. It can control the sky and attack land or sea targets.
Wang Mingzhi, an Air Force researcher, said the J-20 series and J-35A will work together in future battles.
The Air Force also showed a new version of the Y-20 transport plane — the Y-20B.It has new Chinese-made engines that are stronger and use less fuel. This allows the PLA to carry supplies farther than before.
Several new combat drones (无人机) were also shown in the parade. This suggests the Air Force may use more drones in the future.
Wu Peixin, an aviation expert, said many countries are now using stealth fighters together with drones. “Stealth jets are expensive and advanced, while drones are cheaper. In battle, a pilot can guide drones to attack targets without taking big risks,” he said. This new way of fighting could change air combat in the future.

Prince Mathew is a ten-year-old inventor. He built a model for a robot that will let people do farm work remotely (远程).
When Prince was a young boy, he didn’t share the same interest as the others. He didn’t have many toys at home and seldom played computer games. However, he was interested in playing with blocks to build things whenever he could.
One day, Prince’s mom said that there was not enough space in their apartment to grow all her plants, so he started thinking about ways to solve the problem. Then an idea came up, “What if we could grow plants in a different place from where we live ”
Prince spent about two to three months building his robot. Before drawing out designs, he had to search for a great deal of information on the Internet. Good morning, everyone! My name is Kasper and I’m a child-sized robot. I have black hair and always wear a baseball cap.
I am able to move my arms and head. I can also open and close my mouth and eyes. I can even show several basic emotions, such as happiness, sadness and surprise. For example, I smile when I am happy and I frown when I am sad.
I was designed by scientists in 2005. My job is to help children with autism (自闭症) understand emotions and language and know how to get along with people. I am now working in a kindergarten for autistic children. I talk and play with the children about ten minutes once a week. I often speak slowly to them so that they can better understand what I am saying. I like being touched by these children. However, if a child hits me, I will hide my face in my hands and cry out, “Ouch! This hurts.” The child will then know it is wrong to hit others.
You might ask if I have really helped the children learn some social skills. The answer is “YES”. I remember a girl in the kindergarten. She was alone and protected herself by talking with nobody, but now she is willing to hug everyone and has made some friends after playing with me for some time.
As a robot for autistic children, my greatest wish is to become more helpful to them. I believe that scientists will help make my wish come true in the future.

The Story of a Young Inventor
16-year-old Li Ming is a middle school student from Shanghai. He is not only good at his lessons but also has a strong interest in inventing things. Last year, he invented a “smart trash can” which won first prize in a national invention competition.
Li Ming got the idea of inventing the smart trash can from his daily life. He noticed that his parents often forgot to take out the trash, which made the house smell bad. He also found that some trash cans were not clean and easy to attract insects. So he decided to invent a trash can that could solve these problems.
The smart trash can has many special functions. First, it can send a message to the owner’s phone when it is full. This reminds the owner to take out the trash in time. Second, it has a built-in sensor. When someone walks near it, the lid of the trash can opens automatically, so people don’t need to touch the lid with their hands. This keeps the trash can clean and hygienic. Third, it has a small fan inside which can reduce the bad smell.
Inventing the smart trash can was not easy. Li Ming spent three months doing research and collecting information. He also asked his science teacher for help. His teacher taught him how to use some tools and software to design the trash can. There were many difficulties during the process. For example, the first sensor he used didn’t work well. He tried different sensors and finally found the right one.
Li Ming’s invention has been praised by many people. A company even offered to buy his invention, but he refused. He said, “I want to improve the smart trash can further. I hope it can be used in more families and help more people.”
