In a little town, there was a clock tower that had stood for centuries. The clock tower was known for its perfect timekeeping, and was looked after by Mr. Pendulum, the town’s timekeeper.
One day, Mr. Pendulum decided to take on an apprentice(学徒). He chose a young boy named Oliver who had always been attracted by the clock tower. Oliver was excited but also nervous, knowing that keeping time was a responsibility(责任) of great importance. Mr. Pendulum taught Oliver everything he knew about the clock.
As Oliver worked alongside Mr. Pendulum, he learned that time was not just about numbers and minutes—it was about moments and memories. The clock tower had a special characteristic: It could show little bits of the past and future. Mr. Pendulum showed Oliver how to use this characteristic to help people in need.
One day, a young woman named Emily came to the clock tower for help. She was feeling lost and uncertain of her future. Mr. Pendulum and Oliver let her see a piece of her past, where she had faced challenges but had also experienced moments of joy and growth. They then showed her a possible future, where she could achieve her dreams and find happiness. Emily was moved by the experience and left the clock tower with renewed hope. Oliver realized that the true power of the clock tower was not in keeping time, but in helping people find their way. He also learned that time was not something to be controlled, but something to be treasured.

I was travelling on a British ship from India to London in 1905. Among all the passengers, no one would fail to notice Padishah, an Indian businessman. From the moment he got on the ship, he kept showing off the diamond on his turban. The big diamond successfully attracted attention, including that of the five ostriches on the deck.
One morning, as Padishah passed by the ostriches, one swallowed his diamond suddenly. The bird ran around and mixed itself with the others in no time.
“Whose are these stupid ostriches I want my diamond back!” Padishah shouted angrily. People began to crowd on the deck. I was among the first to arrive. I didn’t feel half sorry for the man as he was asking everyone what to do for the diamond’s return.
Word swept across the ship about the accident, reaching a man named Potter. After lunch in the hall, Potter went to Padishah and claimed, “I’ve contacted the ostriches’ owner in London. He accepted my offer for all five and now I am the owner. I have the right to keep the birds and the diamond inside.” I thought Potter was rather smart and regretted deeply at a lost chance.
Padishah was so upset and blurted, “There’s no way you can get my diamond,” he continued as he got calmer. “I can offer you 100 pounds for the birds.” Potter simply refused and left.
After a while, Potter came back to the hall with a sly smile. He announced that he wanted to sell four birds separately to separate people by auction(拍卖). The starting price was 80 for a bird. One of them, he would keep for himself.
Before the crowd realized what was happening, a diamond businessman got one bird for 100 pounds. The prices for the following birds rose higher and higher. Ryan and Ahmed sat on their bicycles at the start of the cyclocross course. Ahmed had been competing in cyclocross for three years, but this was Ryan’s first race. He wished he could remember everything Ahmed had taught him.
Ryan reviewed the last six months in his mind. From the moment, Ahmed had first asked whether he would like to try the sport, Ryan had been excited. Ahmed helped Ryan find safety gear. He also explained the importance of practising and set up a plan for the two friends to practise together.
Practising was hard. Ryan soon grew bored with working on the same skills over and over. He was ready to race! Ryan ended up skipping(不参加)many of the practices. When Ryan did go to practices, he spent more time doing tricks with his bike than he did listening to Ahmed’s tips.
“Now the real fun begins,” Ryan thought as he sat at the starting line.
“You need to get serious,” Ahmed warned. “Cyclocross can be dangerous.”
Bang! The starting gun went off. The boys rushed off the starting line. Ryan saw the first obstacle (障碍) ahead. It was a series of small hurdles.
“Here I go!” Ryan shouted when he reached the hurdles. He jumped off his bike and landed hard on his foot. Next, he had to get his bike onto his shoulder. Ryan could not remember what Ahmed said about shouldering the bike. He tried to pick it up by the wheels but dropped. Finally, he got his bike off the ground. As he ran, he tried to balance the bike on his shoulder. The bike was heavy, and his ankle hurt. Before he knew it, he was lying face-down in the mud.
“Are you okay ” Ryan heard his friend ask. Ahmed reached down to help Ryan. Ryan was thankful that Ahmed cared more about him than about the race. He caught Ahmed’s hand and stood.

Wednesday
Today it snowed for the first time this winter, and school
was cancelled. We were supposed to have a test in Pre-Algebra, and
I’ve been lazy ever since I became a Safety Patrol. So I was excited.
I called Rowley and told him to come over. We have been talking about building the world’s biggest snowman for the past couple of years now.
And when I say the world’s biggest snowman, I’m not joking. Our goal is to get into the “Guinness Book of World Records”.
But every year we’ve got serious about going for the record, all the snow has melted(融化), and we’ve missed our window of opportunity. So this year, I wanted to get started right away. When Rowley came over, we started rolling(滚)the first snowball to make the base. I thought the base was going to have to be at least eight feet tall on its own if we wanted to have a shot at breaking the record. But the snowball got very heavy, and we had to take a bunch of breaks in between rolls so we could catch our breath.
During one of our breaks, Mom came outside to go to the grocery store, but our snowball was blocking her car in. So we got a little free labour out of her.
After our break we pushed that snowball until we couldn’t push it any further. But when we looked behind us, we saw the mess we had made.
The snowball had got so heavy that it tore up all the turf(草皮)Dad had just laid down last autumn.
I was hoping it would snow a few more inches and cover up our tracks, but just like that, it stopped snowing.
Our plan to build the worlds’ biggest snowman was starting to fall apart. So I came up with a better idea for our snowball.
Every time it snows, the kids from Whirley Street use our hill for sledging, even though this isn’t their neighbourhood.
So tomorrow morning, when the Whirley Street kids come marching up our hill, we are going to teach those guys a lesson.
32. Why was the school cancelled today
The bad weather B. A test in Pre-Algebra
C. The Safety Patrol’s task. D. A plan for breaking the record
33. What do the underlined words“window of opportunity” mean
A. A wonderful chance to sledge. B. A short time to make a snowman.
C. A pleasant break from having the test. D. A narrow space for rolling a snowball.
34. Which picture can best show the mess the two boys made
35.What does “a better idea for our snowball” probably mean
A. Asking parents to make the snowball bigger.
B. Using the snowball to enter the “Guinness Book”.
C. Making the biggest snowman with neighbouring kids.
D. Preventing the Whirley Street kids sledging with the snowball.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. D

34.【答案】C
【解析】看图甄别信息题。(因为网上所提供的图片不大清楚,故只能用排除法解题)。根据“After our break we pushed that snowball until we couldn’t push it any further. But when we looked behind us, we saw the mess we had made.”可知图中应该还有雪球的存在,排除D选项;第二幅图描述的是“but our snowball was blocking her car in.”与本题无关也应该排除;A图片描述的是他们正在滚雪球,也与本题无关,可以排除;故剩下C为正确答案。
另一解析:根据“The snowball had got so heavy that it tore up all the turf (草皮) Dad had just laid down last autumn.”

Roy’s heart beat like a drum. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony(仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows(洞穴)of the owls.
No sign marked them. No fence protected them. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy(破坏)their living area.
He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to stay out of trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn’t feel right.

Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.

It was my first day at school. It was also Miss Caroline’s first day to be a teacher.
Miss Caroline began the day by reading us a story about cats. Then she started to teach us the alphabet(字母表).
When Miss Caroline discovered that I was literate(有读写能力的), she said, “Tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading and writing with a fresh mind.”
After supper that night, Atticus sat down with the paper and called, “Scout, ready to read ”
I told Atticus I didn’t feel very well and didn’t think I’d go to school any more if it was all right with him.
“You never went to school and you do all right, so I’ll just stay home too. You can teach me like Granddaddy taught you.”
“No, I can’t,” said Atticus. “I have to make a living. Besides, they’d put me in prison if I kept you at home. Now what’s the matter ”
I told him what happened at school. “Miss Caroline said you taught me all wrong, so we can’t ever read any more. Please don’t send me back, please sir.”
“First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of people. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—”
“Sir ”
“—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
Atticus continued, “You learned many things today. Miss Caroline learned several things herself. We could not expect her to learn all our ways in one day, and we should understand her when she knew no better.”
“But if I keep on going to school, we can’t ever read any more…”
“That’s really worrying you, isn’t it ”
“Yes, sir.”
When Atticus looked at me, I saw the look on his face that always made me expect something. “Do you know what a compromise(妥协)is ” he asked.

“Did you even hear my question, Lucho ” asked Mr Parra.
The students at the front of the class turned round to watch the show. They were all smiling. Eva Villa had turned to watch too, but she wasn’t smiling. For a moment Eva looked straight into Lucho’s dark sad eyes and he could feel his face turning bright red. Then she turned back to the front and said something to the girl sitting next to her. The girl laughed.
Mr Parra walked towards Lucho’s desk. Lucho liked Mr Parra, although he didn’t like history class. There was too much information to remember.
“Maybe you could tell us what I have been talking about for the last twenty minutes, Lucho, while you were looking out of the window,” said Mr Parra.
Lucho’s heart felt heavy. He had no idea what to say. He looked down at his history textbook. The page was about “The stolen past” and there was a photograph of a gold object that looked very old. Next, he looked quickly at the board and saw one of Mr Parra’s favourite things: a mind map. Every time they had to write about something for homework, Mr Parra asked them to make a mind map.
The mind map had four empty circles joined by four lines to a bigger circle in the centre. In the centre circle Mr Parra had written the word “guaca”. Lucho tried to remember where he had heard the word before.
They were all waiting. Lucho looked out of the window for a second and saw a little yellow bird. Yes, that was it! Guaca was a word that his grandmother had used, but what did it mean The class was still waiting for him to speak. Suddenly he heard the little yellow bird singing in the tree outside and he opened his mouth.
“We were talking about guaca, sir,” he answered.
“And what is guaca, Lucho ” Mr Parra asked.
“Guaca means ‘special object’. An antique object that was made by South American tribes usually from gold, sir.”
Mr Parra looked surprised. He hadn’t expected Lucho to know the answer.
The girl next to Eva turned to look at Lucho again. The rest of Lucho’s classmates had lost interest. Lucho felt better, but Mr Parra hadn’t finished with him yet.
“That’s correct, Lucho,” said Mr Parra. “And what is today’s homework ”

Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Through the window of the candy shop I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Verry special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster and a border made of orange exclamation points.
The necklace looked different from the one I clutched(紧握)in my pocket, I decided. Rounder, bluer. The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up months ago.
“Hey,” Sam asked, “are you coming with me ”
We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by now, I thought.
Once home, I placed the necklace into my old yellow retainer box. I’d cleaned it out and made it my special place for special things. So far, it held twin miniature seashells, a pebble that looked exactly like a bird’s egg, and 11 half-burnt birthday candles.
I looked at the stone, so clean and polished. Could it be Chrissy’s Was it her “very special” necklace
“Uncle Coop,” I called, “would you take me to the store ”
We went into town together and stopped at Luann’s. Uncle Coop let me borrow his cell phone to call the number on the poster.
“Hello ” said a girl’s voice after one ring.
“Hi,” I said, ________. “Is this Chrissy ”
“Yes.”
“Um, my name is Ryan. I think I may have something that belongs to you.”
“My necklace ”
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting at a table across from Chrissy. We were drinking milkshakes and sharing an order of sweet-potato fries while Uncle Coop and Chrissy’s dad drank coffee at the counter.
“It was a gift from my mom,” she said, “before she got sick.”
Chrissy looked down at the blue stone in her hand.
“I’m really sorry,” I said. “Holding on to it somehow makes things a little better,” she said. “Do you know what I mean ”
I thought about the mean kids at school and how holding on to beautiful things often made me feel better.
I nodded. “I think I do.”

Lupe Medrano, a shy girl, was a straight-A student. Though Lupe had a sharp mind, she could not, no matter how much she tried, run as fast as the other girls. The truth was that Lupe was no good in sports.
“I’ll never be good at sports.” She felt angry one rainy day as she lay on her bed, looking at the shelf her father had made to hold her awards. “I wish I could win something, anything, even marble(弹珠).”
At the word “marbles”, she sat up. “That’s it. Maybe I could be good at playing marbles, and marbles is a sport.” She rushed out of her room and found the marbles in her brother’s room.
She practiced shooting softly at first. The marble rolled from her thumb(拇指)and clicked against the targeted(作为目标的)marble. But the target wouldn’t budge. She tried again and again, but the power from her thumb made the targeted marble roll only an inch or two.
She realized her thumb was weak and then decided to squeeze(捏)a rubber eraser one hundred times, hoping it would strengthen her thumb.
The weeks passed quickly. Lupe worked so hard that one day, while she was drying dishes, her mother asked why her thumb was swollen(肿胀的).
“It’s muscle,” Lupe explained, “I’ve been practicing for the marbles championship.”
“You, honey ” Her mother, Mrs. Medrano, knew Lupe was no good in sports.
“Yeah, I beat Alfonso, and he’s pretty good.”
When her father, Mr. Medrano, heard this, he was very happy and encouraged Lupe.
Practice, practice, practice. Lupe got better and better. Then the day of the championship came. She beat her first competitor easily, and won one marble, and then one after another. At last, Lupe was in the final to play against a girl in a baseball cap. The girl never even looked at Lupe.
“I don’t know, Dad. She looks tough.”
“You can do it,” her father encouraged. “Just think of the marbles, not the girl, and let your thumb do the work.”
It was a tough fight. But finally Lupe won the most marbles and became the winner!
“I did it!” Lupe said under her breath. She rose from her knees, which hurt from bending all day, and hugged her father.
Back home, in her own bedroom, she was happy. She had always won praise because of her brains, but winning in sports was a new experience. She thanked her tired thumb. “You did it, thumb. You made me champion.” As its reward, Lupe went to the bathroom, filled the bathroom sink with warm water, and let her thumb swim as it pleased.

Ryan reviewed the last six months in his mind. From the moment, Ahmed had first asked whether he would like to try the sport, Ryan had been excited. Ahmed helped Ryan find safety gear. He also explained the importance of practising and set up a plan for the two friends to practise together.

Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.

When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the teams at school, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa. “I’m going to be an athlete.”
“Dave.” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”

I ran fast that day, But I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“No,” he said calmly, “you didn’t fail. You discovered something.”
“I did ” I asked.
“Yes, you discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. They take work. If you train and work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training, Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.

At lunch, my friend Zhao Min said, “Shirley, try eating xiaolongbao like a local!” I picked one up with chopsticks, but the dumpling broke, and hot soup sprayed onto my classmate Chen Dan’s shirt. He jumped up and shouted, “British attack” Everyone in the dining hall laughed.

The funniest part was PE class. We played jianzi. On my first try, I kicked it so hard that it flew onto the roof The coach shook his head, but Zhao Min whispered, “Use your shoe like this” I tried again and kicked it 3 times Everyone cheered. I felt so proud!

Alex set his lunch tray on the table near his friend Leo. “Trade you some fries for some pretzels” Alex said.
“Deal,” said Leo, taking his bag of pretzels out of bis lunchbox.
Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox.
“What’s that ” asked Daniel, another boy in their class.
Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: “Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom.”
Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox ”
“Yes,” Leo said.
Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.
“Give it back to Leo,” said Alex.
“Well, who wants a note anyway ” Daniel said.
“I do,” said Leo.

Daniel tossed the note and it fell to the floor.

One wet, rainy April afternoon Miss O’ Shay, the principal, sent for Nancy Lee to stop by her office as school closed. Pupils without umbrellas or raincoats crowded in doorways hoping to make it home between showers. Outside the skies were grey. Nancy Lee’s thoughts were suddenly grey, too.
She did not think she had done anything wrong, yet that tight(紧的)little knot came in her throat just the same as she came near Miss O’Shay’s door. Perhaps she had banged her locker too often and too hard. Perhaps the note in French she had written to Sallie halfway across the study hall just for fun had never got to Sallie but into Miss O’Shay’s hands instead.
She knocked on Miss O’Shay’s door. That familiarly solid and competent voice said, “Come in.”
Miss O’Shay had a way of making you feel welcome, even if you came to be punished.
“Sit down, Nancy Lee Johnson,” said Miss O’Shay. “I have something to tell you.” Nancy Lee sat down.“But I must ask you to promise not to tell anyone yet.”
“I won’t, Miss O’Shay,” Nancy Lee said, wondering what on earth the principal had to say to her.
“You are about to graduate,” Miss O’Shay said. “And we shall miss you. You have been an excellent student, Nancy, and you will not be without honors(荣誉)on the senior list, as I am sure you know. ”
At that point there was a light knock on the door. Miss O’Shay called out, “Come in,” and Miss Dietrich entered. “May I be part of this, too ” she asked, tall and smiling.
“Of course,” Miss O’Shay said. “I was just telling Nancy Lee what we thought of her. But I hadn’t got around to giving her the news. Perhaps, Miss Dietrich, you’d like to tell her yourself.”
Miss Dietrich was always direct. “Nancy Lee,” she said, “your picture has won the Artist Club scholarship.”
The brown girl’s eyes widened, her heart jumped, then her throat tightened again. She tried to smile, but instead tears came to her eyes.
“Dear Nancy Lee,” Miss O’Shay said, “we are so happy for you.” The elderly white woman took her hand and shook it warmly while Miss Dietrich smiled with pride.
Nancy Lee must have danced all the way home. She never remembered quite how she got there through the rain. She hoped she had been calm. But certainly she hadn’t stopped to tell anybody her secret on the way. Raindrops, smiles, and tears mingled on her brown face. She hoped her mother hadn’t yet got home and that the house was empty.

It was difficult not to see the 8-year-old boy run in and out of his house repeatedly. His repeated actions caused the curiosity of his neighbor, William Dunn.
“He said he didn’t have a father,” says Dunn, now aged 58.” And I realized that there might be something I could do to help him.”
That “something” was fishing, a hobby that Dunn’s father had once shared with him. He did it at once. After fishing together several times, Dunn saw encouraging changes in the boy’s behavior.
That was 16 years ago. Since then, Dunn has taken groups of fatherless kids fishing almost every weekend, teaching them how to set up a fishing line and bring in a big catch.
“They’ve been through a lot, and their lives have been challenging,” Dunn explains. “But when they’re fishing, all those pains disappear. On the boat, they laugh, smile, and make new friends. I knew I was onto something special.”
Jayden, now 23, has become a fisherman and thanks Dunn for helping him grow up. He proudly mentions catching a shark with Dunn’s help, “I hope he knows that I mean it when I say thank you.”
Another girl, 21-year-old Bella Smith, who is in a foster(抚养)program for young adults, notes that Dunn pays special attention to self-respect and spiritual strength. “When I’m fishing, I can forget about the past and enjoy something fun,” says Bella Smith. “Fishing has taught me that I can have a better life than what I had. Whenever I feel down, I know it’s time to go fishing.”
“There’s nothing like feeling the first pull on the line and seeing a kid’s face light up with a smile,” Dunn adds. “I feel lucky to witness that every weekend.”

Creativity is hard to describe. On the one hand, we know people make creative breakthroughs when they have persistence(坚持). On the other hand, most of us give up when we get stuck on a problem, believing that our creativity gets weaker over time.
In fact, research shows that the longer we stick to a single problem or task, the more creative we get. One key reason for this is the “series order effect(效应).” That is to say, each later creative idea is always better than the previous(之前的)one.
Some business companies fail to understand this point. Silicon Valley(硅谷)prizes youth over experience, believing that “people under 35 are those who make changes happen” while “people over 45 cannot create new ideas.” But many businessmen succeed in their 40s and beyond because they have repeatedly failed. The creators of the top highest-growth new companies are, in fact, around 45 years old.
Scientific talents show a similar feature. Scientists usually do their best work near age 40. Nobel Prize winners and inventors also do much of their best work from their late 30s to mid-40s. Early success is great because it’s unusual, but the best way to achieve a breakthrough is to get stuck and get unstuck over and over again.
The “series order effect” works not just at the personal level but also at the level of companies and markets. Different from the belief in business that you have to be first, many of the most successful companies are those that have gone through early failures. For example, Google succeeded after twenty-two failures. Success can come when you have tried two, three, or even twenty-two times. Novelty(原创能力)is overvalued.
Persistence, however, is undervalued(低估). So, the next time you’re stuck, remember: “You’re more creative than you think you are.”

Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. Alone in a town in England, she often felt lonely.
Then one day in April in 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family. Soon, the cat came to Moss’s house. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors looked like those of a zebra.
Moss once heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. “He became my night watch cat,” Moss said. “Sometimes he would run around the room until I woke up.”
After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would touch her lightly. It wasn’t long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss’s mail. Now whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss’s feet.
This past May, Zebby was named Britain’s National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss’s life easier. “Not yet, my dear.” He shook his head.
I felt relaxed. I didn’t want to meet Belinda’s parents—they might be ten times as loud and bossy as she was.
But Belinda had followed me.
“Not yet ” she shouted. “Why not I’ll send them a message! They’ll listen to me!”
Belinda ran to the radio. She shouted into it so loudly that I had to cover all my four ears. “Mummy! Daddy! I’m on an awful spaceship full of purple people! Come and find me now!”
