Derivation
and
compounding.
In
this
lesson,
the
teacher
wants
to
help
students
have
a
better
understanding
about
word
formation
which
can
improve
their
guessing
ability.
The
teacher
will
create
more
opportunities
to
foster
students’
guessing
strategy
which
can
enlarge
their
vocabulary
and
broaden
their
horizon.
As
for
students,
whenever
coming
across
unknown
words,
they
always
look
them
up
in
the
dictionary.
After
leaning
this
lesson,
students
can
apply
the
guessing
strategy.
Teaching
objectives:
1. Students
can
memorize
derivation
and
compounding.
2. Students
can
guess
the
words’
meaning
by
word
formation
and
apply
the
guessing
strategy.
Teaching
procedures:

Step1:
Warm-up
1
Introduce
herself
and
invite
students
to
guess
what
she
wanted
to
be
before
being
a
teacher.

Have
a
revision
of
suffix
-“er,
ist,
or”
referring
to
people.

Step2:
Presentation
1
Invite
students
to
find
similar
words
from
the
article
“Friendship”
2
List
these
words
in
groups
and
help
students
make
a
conclusion.
There
are
two
kinds
of
words
formation:
Derivation&
Compounding.

Step3:
Practice
1
Play
a
brainstorming
game
with
students
which
can
help
students
consolidate
this
knowledge
they
have
learned.

Let
students
guess
the
meanings
of
words
from
sentences

Do
exercise
from
our
text
book
“The
Diary
of
a
Young
Girl”.

Step4:
Extension
Show
students
an
article:
some
sayings
about
cats.
After
reading
the
article,
students
can
draw
a
conclusion
that
is
we
can
guess
the
words
meaning
not
just
by
words
itself,
but
by
the
context,
explanation
and
common
sense.

Conclusion
Help
students
sum
up
today’s
lesson
and
encourage
them
not
to
be
frightened
or
frustrated
when
encountering
words
that
they
don’t
know.
