Do you know that there are twelve Chinese zodiac signs, each one represented by an animal Each one of the twelve animals has their own characteristics and attributes, and each year is represented by a 31 animal. For example, 1990 was the year of the Horse, 32 2010 was the Year of the Tiger. In Chinese culture, some people believe that a person's success, personality and marriage are based on the animal of the year in which they were born.
However, the origin of the zodiac signs is based on a legend. Long ago, the Jade Emperor wanted to 33 twelve animals to be his guards. So, all animals on Earth were ordered to take part in a 34 race. The first twelve animals to swim across the fast river would be the winners of the race, and therefore would have a year of the zodiac specially given to 35.
The Rat came first because he jumped on the back of the Ox to cross the river, and then suddenly jumped down from the Ox and ran to the Emperor's feet to win first place. As Tiger and Rabbit are both fast and competitive, they both raced to the finish line, with Tiger being faster. Dragons were naturally eye-catching, so the Emperor immediately noticed it, who said his son could be sixth. Immediately after, Snake said Dragon was his adopted father, so he came 36. Then, as Horse and Goat were both 37 and kind to one another, they let each other go first, so they came seventh and eighth. The ninth animal to finish the race was Monkey, as he jumped between trees and stones to catch up with the other animals after falling behind. Finally, the last three animals to finish the race were the Rooster, Dog and Pig.
Some people wonder 38 the cat isn't one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, and many people believe that the Cat joined the Rat in jumping on the Ox's back to cross the river, but the Rat pushed it into the water, so it was washed away and didn't 39 the Emperor in time to get a ranking. No wonder cats and rats are always 40 in our daily lives.

In some areas of Yunnan, when winter comes, people sit around a fire and bake tea in pottery pots on the charcoal fire. After the tea leaves are roasted, people add hot water to boil them. While drinking tea, they chat with each other and bake fruits over the fire, which has become a social scene in these areas.
Today, the unique experience of "boiling tea around a stove" has become popular on the Internet unexpectedly. On the social media platform Xiaohongshu, the number of views on the topic has also been over 12 million.
Now netizens are sharing plenty of other choices in the activity, from homemade roasted milk tea to heated wine. In addition to all types of drinks, the choices of snacks are even more diverse. The most popular choices include roasted sweet potatoes, oranges, glutinous rice cakes, as well as marshmallows. Some people also prepare dried fruits, nuts and even red dates for health management.
Stove-boiled tea has attracted young Chinese people through its connection with natural environment. People normally sit outside or in indoor courtyards with potted plants and traditional Chinese decorations. Some also show their love of stove-boiled tea while wearing traditional Hanfu clothing in these graceful settings.
The charm of boiling tea around a stove also comes from companionship. When people are facing the pressure of a fast life and the stress of work and study, making tea around the fire provides a chance to slow down, relax and get back to living a life with your friends. A small stove, a pot of tea, and some friends gathered to chat together easily take up a whole afternoon.

Americans have used colours to create many expressions they use every day.
We say we're "in the pink" when we are in good health and it is easy to understand how this expression was born. When my face has a nice fresh, pink colour, it is a sign which shows my health is good.
The colour green is natural for trees and it is an unnatural colour for humans. When someone doesn't feel well, for example, we say he looks green. When someone is angry because he doesn't have what someone else has, we say he is "green with envy".
Some people are "green with envy" because someone else has more dollars or "greenbacks". Dollars are called "greenbacks" because that's the colour of the back side of the money.
Blue is a cool colour. The traditional blue music of American blacks is the opposite of red hot music. It is slow, sad and soulful (深情的). To be blue, of course is to be sad.
The colour black is often used in expressions. People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as "black day". A "black sheep" is the member of a family or group who always seems to be in trouble. If someone meets a "black cat", something unlucky might happen to him. Not all the "black" expressions have bad meanings. A company "in the red" is losing money. If someone tells you to put something "in black and white", they want you to write it down.
After reading the passage, what can we infer if someone "looks green"
A. He looks well.B. He may need a doctor.C. He is healthy.D. He is "in the pink".
48. Which word describes the red hot music
A. Fast.B. Sad.C. Slow.D. Soulful.
49. My brother is ________ of our family, everyone hates him.
A. a black horseB. a black catC. a black dogD. a black sheep
50. Which of the following is TRUE
A. A company surely likes to be "in the red".
B. All the colour expressions in the passage come from British English.
C. The "black" expressions sometimes have good meanings.
D. Dollars are called "greenbacks" because it has trees on the back side.
D
All I had to do for the two dollars was to clean her house for a few hours after school. It was a beautiful house, too, with a plastic-covered sofa and chairs, wall-to-wall blue-and-white carpeting, a white stove, a washing machine and a dryer—things that were common in Her neighborhood, absent in mine. In the middle of the Second World War, she had butter, sugar and steaks.
Part of my pride in working for Her was earning money I could spend freely: on movies, candy, ice-cream... But a larger part of my pride was based on the fact that I gave half my wages to my mother, which meant some of my earnings were used for real things—an insurance-policy payment or what was owed to the milkman or the iceman. The pleasure of being necessary to my parents was great. I had a status (地位) that doing housework at home did not provide—and it earned me a slow smile, an approving nod from an adult. Confirmation that I was adult-like, not childlike.
Little by little, I got better at cleaning Her house—good enough to be given more to do, much more for a little girl. I was ordered to carry bookcases upstairs and, once, to move a piano from one side of a room to the other. I wanted to refuse, or at least to complain, but I was afraid she would fire me, and I would lose the freedom the dollar gave me, as well as the status I had at home.
Then one day, alone in the kitchen with my father, I let drop a few complaints about the job. I gave him details, examples of what troubled me, yet although he listened carefully, I saw no sympathy in his eyes. Perhaps he understood that what I wanted was a solution to the job, not an escape from it. In any case, he put down his cup of coffee and said, "Listen. You don't live there. You live here. You make the job. It doesn't make you."
I have worked for all sorts of people since then, geniuses and morons (笨蛋), quick-witted and dull, big-hearted and narrow. I've had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home.
In Paragraph 1, the writer mentioned what there were in her house (the employer's house) to ________.
show a lifestyle at the time
stress that the employer's life was different from the writer's
demonstrate (阐述) her pride in working for the employer

52. What was the writer most proud of with the cleaning job
A. Being able to buy things without asking her parents.
B. Helping her mother out by doing housework.
C. Making contributions (贡献) to the family income.
D. Getting smiles and approving nods from Her.
53. The writer complained to her father because ________.
A. She hoped that he could negotiate with Her
B. She didn't know how to escape from the job
C. She hoped that he could help solve her problem
D. She didn't know how to keep her status at home
54. "In those days, the forties, children were not just loved or liked; they were needed. I suspect that children aren't needed in that way now. They are loved, doted on, protected, and helped. Fine, and yet..." should be placed between ________.
A. Paragraph 1 and 2
B. Paragraph 2 and 3
C. Paragraph 3 and 4
D. Paragraph 4 and 5
55. From her childhood experience, the writer learned ________.
A. she should try various jobs to widen her horizons
B. she should never ignore the freedom her earnings give her
C. she should consider who she will work for while hunting for a job
D. she should never judge herself by the work she does

七、书面表达(满分 20 分)
Dear principal,I'd like to recommend my friend Sandy as the new chairperson of the Students' Union. Sandy is 15 years old and she likes reading and organizing school activities.
Sandy has many good qualities for this position. First, she is organized. Last term, she planned our class trip to the science museum perfectly, making sure everyone had a great time. Second, she is helpful. She often helps classmates with their homework after school. Third, she is confident. She gave a wonderful speech in our school's English speech contest last month and won the first prize.
Sandy's favorite colors are blue and green. She likes blue because it makes her feel calm, which helps her stay rational when solving problems. She likes green because it represents nature and hope, and she hopes to bring more energy to our school.
I hope that you can agree with me.
Yours sincerely,Daniel
