What’s your dream job How much do you know about it A group of students from Tianjin found a common problem among teenagers. Most of them have little idea about their plans for jobs.
To guide teenagers to make job plans, the students started a project. “Our survey shows 72% of students want to know more about different jobs. Doctors are the top ones, followed by teachers, accountants, lawyers and so on,” said Wang Xinran, the project leader.
The team interviewed 32 professionals in different fields and posted their interviews online. They shared true stories behind each job, allowing students to learn about the jobs fully.
A team member, Lu Jinyan, said his most unforgettable interview was with a photographer. “I used to think being a photographer was cool and romantic. But now I know they have to deal with lots of problems, such as a sudden change of weather or the damage to the camera,” Lu said. “They also need to communicate with different people, which is not easy.”
But the project doesn’t mean to let the students down by telling them the truth. “We want to show the professionals’ (职业的) love and hard work rather than the bad sides,” said a member, Zhao Yajie. “Jobs can not only enrich (丰富) teenagers’ life experiences, but help them make quick progress. They are the real meaning of working. We really hope our project can help students know that.”

Amy is a biologist (生物学家) working at a marine (海洋的) park. These kinds of parks provide fun and education for tens of thousands of people each year.
Amy takes care of many animals in the park, but she also does important research. As she observes the animals that she looks after carefully, she learns more about their needs and behavior (行为). This information helps the animals in the park and in the wild.
It’s hard work to look after these animals. Their needs often change according to different hours of the day. So Amy must depend on her science knowledge and good number sense to help her make the right decisions all day long.
Even though dolphins (海豚) spend much of their time underwater, they are mammals (哺乳动物), mother dolphins must nurse, or feed milk to their babies.
Amy and her team know this first-hand. One of their dolphins recently gave birth. A baby dolphin is not small, either. It was almost 1 meter long the day it was born. A big dolphin usually eats about 4% of its body weight in food every day. Amy knows that a mother dolphin that is nursing needs twice the food. Takeover DayWant to be a football coach, a policeman or a musician If you could do any job for a day, what would it be Takeover Day offers young people this chance.
Takeover Day is an event for young people to “take over” the day from adults (成年人). Of course, it’s difficult to give someone the job of a film star or a model! However, Takeover Day has offered young people jobs as news reporters, teachers and even politicians (政客). The event serves two purposes. First, it gives young people experience in different kinds of jobs. Second, adults can learn from young people’s opinions and fresh ideas. Here’s what the students say about their Takeover Day. Simon, 16, went to Coventry Football Club. He became coach of the football team for a day: “Having a go at training professional players was an unforgettable experience,” said Simon. “If I had the chance, I would do this job every day.”
Sally, 15, became the head teacher of her school. “I’d go mad if I were a head teacher!” she said. “So many meetings!” Sally thinks she learned a lot. “My favorite part of the day was meeting the school cook and improving the school menus for the week. It was a great chance to tell her what we really like eating!”
Paul, 17, spent the day with an important politician. He even went to a meeting at Buckingham Palace! Paul thought that if everyone had the chance to follow a politician for a day, they’d be amazed. “It isn’t a nine-to-five job. It’s 24/7,” he said, “We even had no time for lunch.”

Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible (有责任的) enough to decide on your career.
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programmes. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV Film Production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself. With all the best wishes!

Have you ever wondered if the colour of our bedroom can affect (影响) how well we sleep Some studies show that it’s true, because colours can influence our moods. Our pre-sleep feelings are also important for quality sleep. So, what bedroom colours should we choose for a good night’s sleep People usually connect blue with calmness and relaxation, making it one of the best colours to paint our bedroom. Blue reminds us of calm things like the sea or the sky. It can even help make our heart beat slower, which helps us relax. A survey shows that people in blue bedrooms sleep longer than those in bedrooms of other colours. Just be careful-dark blue might sometimes make people feel sad.
However, warm colours might be the opposite. Colours like red, orange, and yellow have long wavelengths (波长). These colours are very stimulating—they’re like a wake-up call for our brain,so we’d better avoid these colours.
Like blue, green can also be a good choice for a bedroom colour. It brings a touch of nature into our room. This relaxing colour can bring comfort, peace, hope, and happiness to people, making them feel like being outside in a quiet garden.
If blue and green aren’t quite your style, don’t worry. A simple white room can also create an ideal sleep environment. It keeps the brain from getting too active, and gets us ready for sleep.
A suitable bedroom colour is a helper for a good night’s sleep. However, personal preference (喜好) is the most important. If you prefer a colour that’s not mentioned, that’s okay! After all, a bedroom should be a place where we feel relaxed and comfortable. So, when choosing a bedroom colour, think about your own feelings.

Most people have a favorite color. 29 This can be very important to people in business that sell products all over the world. They might choose a color because they think it is exciting or nice. But in another country, the same color could be used to give a sad meaning. 30
If you ask someone in Britain what the right color is for a bride (新娘) to wear, the answer will be white. In China and other Eastern countries, brides often wear red. 31 But red is an unusual color for a British bride to wear. In Britain, red is used as a sign of danger. Road signs and warning signals are often in red. In Eastern cultures, the color red does not always mean you have to be careful.
32 In Britain and other Western cultures, death and funerals (葬礼) are usually tied to the color black, but in many Eastern countries white is the color people think of when it comes to death and funerals.
Many people like the color orange because it is bright and exciting. 33 Because they believe the color may suggest that the products are cheap and not very good.
In a word, colors have different meanings in different cultures. We should learn to choose the right color in some special situations.
A.Have a look at the following examples.
B.In Egypt, yellow is the color for death.
C.This is because the color red means good luck and happiness.
D.However, how people feel about colors depends on their culture.
E.They are very important colors in people’s daily life.
F.But actually some advertisers (广告商) will not use this color in their advertisements.
Colors can influence our moods. Different colors have different influences on us.
Red is the color of fire, heat, and blood. It is often connected with strong feelings like love and anger. Red can also make people feel energetic. For example, in some restaurants, the walls are painted red to encourage people to eat more. However, too much red can make people feel stressed.
Blue is a calm and peaceful color. It can make people feel relaxed. Hospitals often use blue because it can help patients feel less nervous. Blue can also lower (降低) blood pressure and slow down the heart rate (速率). But if a person is feeling sad, being in a blue room may make them feel worse.
Green is the color of nature. It represents growth and harmony (和谐). Green can make people feel refreshed and balanced. In many offices, people use green plants to make the environment more comfortable. Green is also good for our eyes. When we are tired from looking at the computer screen, looking at something green can help our eyes relax.
Yellow is a bright and cheerful color. It is often used to attract (吸引) attention. For example, school buses are painted yellow so that they can be easily seen. Yellow can also make people feel happy and full of hope. But too much yellow can be over-stimulating (过度刺激的) and make people feel angry.
34.What feeling does red often make people have

If you look at the logos of the top supermarkets in the United States, they all have one thing in common: red. These businesses use red in their logos, in product packaging, and in advertising. Marketing experts in the food industry understand that colours influence customers (顾客). For that reason, red is the most common colour in supermarket brands and logos. But why is red best
Colour psychologists (心理学家) report that the colour red increases a person’s appetite. You may not be aware of being hungry, but red does stimulate appetite. Experts say this is because many nutritious fruits and vegetables are red. If supermarket shoppers see red and feel hungry while they shop, they will buy more. So advertisers understand that red is good for business. According to studies, red also quickly attracts a person’s attention. In addition, it makes a person excited and increases the heart rate. Using red helps supermarkets communicate that they are energetic, positive places to shop. For these reasons, red is a perfect colour for a supermarket brand. It is a subtle but legal (合法的) method for influencing customers.
A recent trend, however, has resulted in a new colour for supermarket logos and brands. With the increasing demand for organic (有机的) foods, new natural food supermarkets have become popular. They sell natural ingredients and healthy food products. These supermarkets are using green in their logos, not red. This is because the colour green reminds people of nature, a clean environment, and healthy food. Natural food supermarkets make sure that customers are aware of how healthy their products are. By choosing green for the logo, the company creates a specific image and identity.
37.What does the underlined word “stimulate” mean in this passage

A.Because they believe customers prefer green food.
B.Because they believe customers are tired of red logos.
C.Because they hope to show that their products are healthy.
D.Because they think green is a perfect colour for a supermarket logo.
40.What can we infer from the passage
A.Using red in logos to influence customers is against the law.
B.Red is better than green to be used in logos in all supermarkets.
C.The use of colour can make a difference in supermarket marketing.
D.Supermarkets that sell natural food often change colours for their logos.
Many of us have seen rainbows in the sky once the sun starts shining again after it rains. For us to see a rainbow, the conditions need to be just right. We need some water drops in the air, like rain or even fog (雾), and we need the sun to be behind us and quite low to the ground. This is because a rainbow is created by light passing through water drops.
The light that comes from the sun seems white to us. But the white light we see is made up of a mix of different colors. When the light goes through a raindrop, these colors can separate out (分离). Each of the colors in the rainbow has a different “wavelength (波长)”. Raindrops look like little balls. When light hits one of these little balls of water, the light can change direction. We call this “refraction (折射)”. Each of the different wavelengths is refracted differently. If the light hits the raindrop at the right place, the refraction separates the wavelengths out into their different colors.
We are taught there are seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo (靛蓝), and violet (紫色). But this isn’t exactly accurate. Blue and green are next to each other in the rainbow, which is why we can see blue. Brown is a mix of red and green. But they aren’t next to each other in the rainbow, so we don’t see them mix to make brown.
We would never see black and white in a rainbow. Black is what we see when there’s no light at all. On the other hand, white is a mix of all the colors together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white light out, meaning it is no longer white.

How to Improve Your Reading
Learning how to read well in English might not be an easy task. 46 Reading well in English is useful for many reasons, not only for taking tests. If you want to improve your reading in English, the following are just for you.Choose right reading materials (材料)
There are so many choices! There are textbooks and graded readers (分级读物), but there are also a lot more books you can read. 47 Here is a good rule to follow: choose reading materials where you understand at least 80% of the content (内容).Be intentional (意图明确的)
Being intentional means doing something on purpose with a reason in mind. With reading, you need to be intentional by setting a reading aim. Decide on a certain number of pages you want to read each day. 48 To make sure your daily practice gets done, spare some time and put it in your study plan! 49
Reading can both introduce you to new vocabulary and teach you how to use them. Many words in English are often used in a consistent (相互连接) way. Reading groups of words, or words that go together will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.Don’t try to understand everything.
As you’re practicing your reading, you need to accept the fact that you might not understand every single word, and that’s OK! Your brain can’t learn so many new things at one time. It’s more important to get the big picture of what you are reading. 50 根据短文内容,将下面的句子还原到文中空白处,使短文内容完整、通顺。(每个选项只能用一次,选项中有一项是多余的)
A.Read word groups.
B.Don’t choose a book that is too easy or too difficult.
C.You could also be intentional with planning a time to read.
D.But it’s something you’ll have to do on your language learning journey.
E.And you can go back to check the new things you don’t understand later.
F.Try to translate every word into your native language (母语).
Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory—short-term and long-term. When you see, hear or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many books. And like a library, it’s organized (有条理的). When you put away a book—or memory—you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meanings of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
51.In the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because ________.
A.they have memory problems B.they are too worried
C.they don’t use a proper way D.they don’t like to study
52.Which is TRUE about the memory according to the passage
A.Short-term memory is seldom used.
B.What we see goes into long-term memory first.
C.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.
D.We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.
53.Which is the one example of “thinking about the word in new ways” in Paragraph 3
A.Making sentences with the word. B.Listening to some interesting stories.
C.Talking with people that you know. D.Drawing pictures of the word on paper.
54.This passage mainly tells us about ________.
A.language students’ problems in study
B.how to make the meanings of words stronger in our memory
C.short-term and long-term memory
D.how to improve ways to remember words
Being Authoritative (权威的) Parents
Phrases like “tiger mom” and “helicopter parent” have made their way into everyday language.
Many of us find ourselves drawn to the idea that with just a bit more parental hard work and effort, we might turn out children with bright futures. But is there anything wrong with a kind of “overparenting style”
Parental involvement has a long history of being studied. Many of the studies, carried out by Diana Baumrind, a famous psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that a good parent is the one who is involved and reacts to her child in a positive way, who sets high expectations but gives her child independence. These “authoritative parents” appear to hit the sweet spot of parental involvement and generally raise children who do better academically, psychologically and socially than children whose parents are not strict and less involved, or controlling and more involved. Why is this parenting style so successful
Authoritative parents actually help improve motivation in their children. Carol Dweck, a social psychologist at Stanford University, has done research that shows why authoritative parents raise more motivated children. In a typical experiment, Dr. Dweck takes young children into a room and asks them to solve a simple puzzle. Most do so with little difficulty. But then Dr. Dweck tells some, but not all, of the kids how clever they are. As it turns out, the children who are not told they’re smart are more motivated to solve increasingly difficult puzzles. They also show higher levels of confidence and show greater progress in puzzle-solving.
As the experiment suggests, praising children’s talents and abilities seems to shake their confidence. Dealing with more difficult puzzles carries the risk of losing one’s status as “smart”. Dr. Dweck’s work strongly supports that of Dr. Baumrind, who also found that reasonably supporting a child’s independence and limiting interference (干涉) causes better academic (学术的) and emotional results.
The central task of growing up is to develop a sense of self that is independent and confident. If you treat your young child who is just learning to walk as if she can’t walk, you reduce her confidence. Allowing children to make mistakes is one of the greatest challenges of parenting. It is easier when they are young. The potential mistakes carry greater risks, and part of being a parent is reducing risk for our children.
55.According to the passage, a “tiger mom” ______.
A.helps her children realize their dreams
B.pays close attention to her children’s experiences
C.places reasonable expectations on her children
D.speaks her children’s everyday language
56.The example of the children doing the puzzles suggests that ______.
A.a good game plays a big role in training young minds
B.bright children usually show less confidence in difficult games
C.puzzle-solving can give children the motivation they need
D.overpraising makes children less motivated and confident
57.The last paragraph tells us that ______.
A.children should not be given much freedom
B.parents should not increase the risk of challenging
C.children should correct mistakes with the help of their parents
D.parents should allow their children to learn from mistakes
How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English It seems there is a scientific reason for this. Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and open the door for future research in this area.” Many language teachers know the value (价值) of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D.C., depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.” Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you’re still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out
58.According to the passage, the best way to remember a foreign language is to ________.
A.read and write more
B.remember words in a song
C.copy the words many times
D.listen to the teacher carefully
59.The underlined word “catchy” probably means “________” in Chinese.
A.艰涩难懂的 B.枯燥乏味的 C.悦耳易记的 D.震耳欲聋的

A asking for directions (方向) is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place, or even when we are just trying to find a place. Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier!
Use greetings (问候语) and polite expressions. Starting the conversation with a greeting is necessary. If you want to get a nice answer, begin by saying “hello” first And some words like “may”, “can” and “could” will help you express yourself better.
Build your words. You should know the basic (基本的) words when asking for directions. It may be useful to remember some famous places. Then try to use the right words, when asking for a direction.

His best friend, Lucas Santos, spoke about his abilities on a video for The Sun. “He is excellent and works hard to play football. He also makes good passes.” His mum, Sandra, was thrilled that her son would make his dream come true. She said, “He started walking before he was one year old. We would go after him, expecting him to keep falling, but he never fell. Muniz’s PE teacher mentioned, “When he arrived there, no one believed in him. But he showed to everyone that he could play as well as any other boy. So he was invited to go to Spain to show his skill.”

Fresh green grass. Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their homes in boxes. The 9,500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-organized park but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs (屋顶) of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.
Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modern city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes such a perfect choice for more and more people.
Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making the cities better than the countryside around them, causing the “urban heat-island effect”, On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.
Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage (排水) system. ________ And small animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than something completely separate from it.
While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise and traffic, whether you’re at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block.
85.With the example of Augustenborg Botanical Garden, the writer wants to explain ________.
A.how wildlife is protected B.what to do with a spare roof
C.how to organize a good park D.what a green roof is like
86.The underlined word “moderate” in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to “________”.
A.raise B.control C.record D.check
87.Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank ________ in Paragraph 4
A.A green roof is alive. B.A green roof stops pollution.
C.A common roof is noisy. D.A common roof increases the cost.
88.The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.discover the problems with green roofs B.introduce the change of green roofs
C.describe the advantages of green roofs D.show the amazing beauty of green roofs
