Do you know when restaurants were invented The first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls and people didn't order food from a menu. Everyone used to share the food from big bowls. Scientists believed that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn't have to store food at home if they ate their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of ancient Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. All of these people had to eat. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the Imperial Way, a very big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn't have to eat the same food as everyone else.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food in the street or at inns—small hotels. Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There were more options in menus, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, this kind of restaurants began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.

In our society, we often care about what others do, but this can sometimes feel stressful. Especially for public persons, there's often a hidden pressure. People often show anger toward them on social media (媒体) because of their unintentional (不经意的) decisions. The Olympic champion (冠军) Quan Hongchan suffered from this. According to reports, Quan returned to Guangzhou after attending an event. During her trip, she stopped by an Apple store to buy a phone for her family. This should have been a simple personal choice, but it quickly drew attention on social media. Some people said she didn't love our country just because she chose a foreign brand.
This situation raises questions about how society sees famous people and their personal choices. Should athletes be treated so strictly for such decisions The answer is, of course, no, Quan has the same rights as anyone to make personal decisions, including which products to buy Being a public person doesn't mean giving up the freedom (自由) to make ordinary choices. I had the meanest(最刻薄的)mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal(谷类食物)and eggs. When others had Coke and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn't alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were.
We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes days.
We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm and up at 8:00 am. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make beds and learn to cook. I am sure she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed "sick" like our friends did in order to miss school.
My mother was the meanest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest people. My family is still recovering from the terrible times of the past couple of years. They began when my teenaged stepson became ill. His disease led to kidney failure (肾衰竭) and an ongoing need for treatment.
As anyone who has cared for a sick child knows, the stress doesn't go away. And there was so much stress. My husband and I were tired, and it was as if we forgot how to communicate—we couldn't have a simple conversation without fighting. Our once-happy home had become tense and unhappy.
In a rare event of communication, my stepson and I were discussing Valentine's gifts. I recalled that his dad gave me a kazoo (卡祖笛) for our Valentine's Day.
My reaction to this gift was surprise, which quickly turned to frustration and embarrassment. I, a professional pianist, couldn't get it to make a sound. The kazoo eventually got packed away and forgotten.
But he was interested and asked to see it. After some trouble, I found it.
"You couldn't get a sound " he asked, amazed, turning it around in his hands. "What's so hard about it "
"I don't know. It just never worked."
My husband took the kazoo—"It's easy! Look, you just do this."—and blew. Nothing happened. Surprised, he tried again. Still there was no sound.
Frustrated, he tried again, only to produce a sound like an angry bee trapped in the mouth of a bear. My stepson burst into laughter.
Seeing his face light up was wonderful. Soon, we were all laughing in the point of tears.
It was as if the dark had lifted and the sunshine was let in. Eyes met and souls reconnected. My stepson took a turn to the kazoo. He did no better than us. More laughing.
It was the best 10 minutes of the past couple of years.
The mood stayed light for the rest of the evening. Months later, we still remember it. It didn't solve anything. While my stepson recently had a successful operation (手术), his life will always have challenges. But this experience with the kazoo proved to be a turning point. It showed us that there are still things to laugh at and enjoy, and we can still connect as a family. Thanks to a simple kazoo, we remembered that we are one.

Astronomy(天文学)is the oldest science known to men. Thousands of years ago, men looked at the stars and wondered about the heavens(苍穹).
The Greeks studied astronomy over 2, 000 years ago. They could see the size, color and brightness of a star. They could see its place in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help them study the heavens. Each new tool added to the field of astronomy helped men reach out into space. Until there were telescopes, men did not know much about the moon. They did not know that the planet called Saturn(土星)had rings around it. Their sight was so limited that they could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s people thought there were only six planets. Pluto(冥王星), the last of the nine plane nets to be discovered was not seen until 1930.
Before the spectroscopes(分光镜), men didn't know what kind of gas was in the sun or other stars. Without radio telescopes(射电望远镜), we did not know that radio noise came far from space.

Are you a heads-down tribe member Heads-down tribe members now can be seen everywhere. More and more traffic accidents are happening because more drivers use mobile phones while driving. In order to make drivers pay more attention to driving, some new traffic rules have been made. For example, heads-down tribe members who use mobile phones while driving in Taiwan are fined. How often does one hear children wishing they were grown-ups or old people wishing they were young again Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What's more, life is always giving new things to the child—things that older people have lost their interest in because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.
When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes and his room, but has to work hard if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
96.Who can be the happiest person
A.A person who wishes to grow up.
B.A person who wishes to be young.
C.A person who enjoys each age.
D.A person who knows to control sadness.
97.Which of the following can explain "childhood" well
A.A child feels life is easy because of few responsibilities in the childhood.
B.Childhood is always happy because parents always look after you well.
C.Childhood is full of happiness without any pain.
D.Childhood means children can do anything.
98.What does the underlined word "responsibilities" in the second paragraph mean?
A.Duties. B.Jobs. C.Suggestions. D.Desires.
99.Which period of one's life is the best according to the writer
A.Childhood. B.Youth.
C.Old age. D.He doesn't tell us.
100.What is the main idea of this passage
A.Life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains.
B.Young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard.
