How do boys and girls spend their spare time after finishing their homework Watch TV, play computer games, or go outside to relax Here’s a good example.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters: eleven-year-old Amy and Lily who is two years younger. Recently, the Mark family became the focus (焦点) of the whole country after they completed 100 different outdoor activities in one year.
The Mark couple didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the TV and become “couch tomatoes”. So about one year ago, the Marks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not allowed. Instead, they made 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside. Although Mr. and Mrs. Mark are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to encourage their daughters. It turns out that the two sisters really had a good time joining activities.
Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy or snowy, the Marks would set off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing, skiing, and so on. The two little girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities.

A lot of people play sports, but very few people become sports professionals. If sports aren’t going to be your future, then why should you play them Why should you train every day Why should you work hard and feel sore (酸痛的) the next day Wouldn’t it be better to forget sports and only pay attention to your lessons
In fact, there are a lot of reasons to play sports. First of all, sports are a great way to exercise. 锻炼使你保持健康、强壮。 It also helps you stay in good condition. Your body produces endorphins (内啡肽) when you exercise. Endorphins give you more energy and make you feel happier.

Also, they teach young people how to communicate and work as a team. Sports teach young people to respect their coaches, teammates and players from the other team.
Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports, he or she may have fewer problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.
Another good way of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days, a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun. You take in fresh air. All of these things are important.

A new study has uncovered a different optimal (最佳的) number of daily steps for better health, differing from the long-recognized 10,000-step guideline.
Published in The Lancet Public Health on Wednesday, this research examined a large number of previous studies conducted between January 1, 2014 and February 14, 2025. The results showed that when compared to individuals who take around 2,000 steps per day, those who walk 7,000 steps daily enjoy notable health benefits. They have a 47% lower risk of death, a 38% lower risk of dementia, and a 25% lower risk of heart disease. Additionally, their risk of dying from heart disease is 47% lower, and the risk of dying from cancer is 37% lower. Although the risk of developing cancer is 6% lower, this reduction is not statistically significant. Moreover, 7,000 steps are associated with a 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a 22% lower risk of depressive symptoms, and a 28% lower risk of falls.
The study’s authors pointed out that while 10,000 steps per day is suitable for those who are more active, 7,000 steps is a more realistic and achievable target for many, and it still brings meaningful health improvements. Even 4,000 steps a day is better than 2,000, as it is linked to a 36% lower risk of death. In essence, any amount of walking you can do in a day is beneficial for both your body and mind.
However, the study does have some limitations. For instance, it lacks an age-specific analysis, and there are only a small number of studies available for most specific health outcomes. The authors expressed hope that the 7,000-step count can serve as a practical public health target, with future studies focusing more on age-specific recommendations.
11.What is the optimal daily step count found in the new study
12.How much lower is the risk of death for 7,000 steps compared to 2,000 steps
13.Why is 7,000 steps considered better for many people than 10,000 steps
14.Which limitation of the study is mentioned in the article
15.What might help you reach 7,000 daily steps

Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong Province has a long history of 2000 years of making kites. At first, they were often used for measuring distances (测量距离) and communicating. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), kites started to be popular among local people as a way to have fun. In 2006, the Weifang kite-making was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) lists.
Yang Hongwei, 59, was born into a kite-making family. Yang often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’s workshop. “Every time I see these beautiful kites, my sadness and down feelings go away,” said Yang. Yang started to learn the skill from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the skill for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common styles like butterflies and swallows, but also some prints telling Chinese traditional stories, legends and history. For example, she once made a kite showing a phoenix head (凤头) lined with paintings of 50 famous women in Chinese history on each side. Though the idea was cool, the process was not easy. Yang said that each woman had different characters in appearance, clothing and the makeup style. In order to create the women’s images, she spent much effort and time checking historical records.
In her spare time, she also travels to different countries, including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites. “I’m an inheritor (传承人) of the culture. Vincent van Gogh (文森特 梵高) was born in the Netherlands in 1853. Although he enjoyed drawing from the time he was a young boy, Vincent had a number of other jobs before he decided to work as an artist full time. At around the age of 27, van Gogh decided to throw himself into art. When Vincent first started drawing, he used lots of dark colors such as browns and dark greens. His pictures were often sad.
Much of what we know about Vincent comes from letters he wrote to his brother Theo. Theo worked in an art gallery (画廊) in Paris and supported Vincent. He sent Vincent money and encouraged him. Theo tried to sell Vincent’s paintings, but no one wanted to buy them. They wrote to Vincent to tell him about a new style of painting in Paris called Impressionism (印象派). In 1886, Vincent moved to Paris to learn from some new painters. During this time Vincent began to use brighter colors.
Vincent liked to draw many things. He painted subjects from the streets and cafes of Paris as well as the countryside. He also became interested in painting portraits (肖像) of people. When he couldn’t find models, he would paint himself for practice. He painted over twenty self portraits during this time.

Fan Jinshi, a famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家), is 86 years old now. She was awarded by UNESCO for her achievement in the protection of the Mogao Caves (莫高窟) in Dunhuang on Sept. 7, 2023.
In 1963, Fan, a 25-year-old Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves. “Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was amazing. I decided to stay here and fight for these beautiful caves forever,” Fan said.
Fan and her team had to live in a mud house and drink salty water. They stayed inside the caves to do some research, copy murals (壁画), and do whatever they could to protect them.
In 2011, after 40 years of hard work, a report on the Mogao Caves written by Fan’s team was finally published. It was known as the first professional (专业的) report on cave archaeology in China.

One of the challenges in communication is saying “no” when you need to. Often we promise to do things even when we should refuse. This leads to stress when we break our promise, and we then feel bad for not keeping our word and lose trust for not keeping our promise.

Situation: Explain exactly why you will have to refuse that person’s request.
Action: It is acceptable to tell the person whom you are refusing, what you can and will do.
In most cases, when you show empathy (同情) with an understanding statement, explain the situation, and tell the person what you do, you will appease (安抚) that person. You will be effectively and politely saying “no” without causing anger and unhappiness.
55.How may people feel when they break the promise

57.What’s the best way to learn how to say “no”

As the saying says, “Your tongue (舌头) has the power of life and death.” This means that your words have power (力量) to finally cause things to happen, even life or death.
We may all experience the power of words in our lives, even when we were very young. A child is blamed (责备) by teachers or parents, and after that, he might probably think of himself as a bad child. Most kids have that experience. They say it is important to praise (表扬) children four times for each negative (消极的) word. Blaming will make things worse, while positive (积极的) words are helpful, especially when being in trouble or in need. When we fail the exam, encouraging words from our teachers or parents make us work harder at our lessons. Encouraging words can go quite a long way. They cheer people up. For example, encouraging words to someone who is sad can help them make it through the day. Words can have a powerful effect on your brain. And it will, in turn, have a great influence on your actions.
Everything you do depends on what you choose to do. It’s not your parents, your past relationships or your job, but you and only you that are responsible for every goal you set. If you have dreams in life, write them down and speak them out. Your words are likely to bring you something amazing.

Have you heard of “soft skills” before To be honest, they’re abilities that are not taught in school. However, to be truly happy and successful, you need to develop soft skills. Here are some of them.
Understand the power of non-language communication. If you have watched a nature program, you’ve probably seen how some animals communicate. For example, a wolf can control its young just by using a different look in its eyes. While humans have the ability to speak, about 55% of our face-to-face communication actually takes place through body language.
Know how to make others laugh. I’m sure with your friends and family you have a great sense of humor. However, how about at work or when you meet strangers Break free, and add humor to your actions. Then your personal happiness will rise.
Respect others. Unfortunately, this soft skill seems to be going out of fashion at present. Too many people have become self-centered, and put their own hopes above the needs of other people. Please make sure you respect all those you come into contact with. Interestingly, by respecting others, you’ll find they respect you more in return.
Have persuasive (令人信服的) power. This isn’t some kind of superheroes’ power. It’s an ability that many people have developed. If you learn to communicate persuasively, you will go far.

What is it like to grow up
As you grow older, there will be certain events that will mark your growth. Graduating from high school and getting your first job are just a few of these. What are some other ways in which we mark our journey toward adulthood
In the US, getting your driver’s license (执照) at the age of 16 is seen as a major coming-of-age (成人) ritual (仪式). You may have seen kids celebrating their first car in movies and TV shows. It is the first true taste of independence for most teenagers. But not every teenager gets a car right away. Usually, their parents will buy a second-hand car for them as their first car.
Another big coming-of-age event is the prom (毕业舞会). Held at the end of the year the prom is a graduation celebration for senior high school students. Teenagers wear fancy clothing, ask each other to dance and vote (投票) for a prom “king” and “queen”. For many teenagers, prom is the biggest social event of the year. It’s a time for them to dress and act like an adult.
And there’s still more. At the age of 18, we can vote in the US and at 21, we can drink alcohol (酒). This is also the time when most children move out of their parents’ home for college or work.
It is around this age that society starts to consider us to be adults. But what does it really mean to be an adult
Psychologist Jeffrey Arnett surveyed young adults and found three common adulthood goals: taking responsibility for yourself, making independent decisions, and being financially (经济上) independent.
I agree with Arnett. Being an adult has more to do with one’s maturity (成熟). If you want to drive, vote, drink, leave home or even start a romantic relationship, you have to make sure that you’re ready to be responsible.

Social media influencers (网红) are a big part of teen life today. They seem to shape how you think, what you wear, and even how you feel about yourself. You may follow them for different reasons. No matter what the reasons are, they act like friends or role models, making you feel less alone.
Some influencers post good things, but others spread harmful ideas. A major danger of influencer culture lies in their gaslighting (操纵) of the people who watch them. They make you feel like you are never enough unless you buy their products. They make their lives look effortless but hide the work behind their “perfect” posts and the luck that got them where they are. When you begin to doubt yourselves and wonder, “Why can’t I be like that ” or “What am I doing wrong ” You have already been gaslighted.
Influencers know very well how to keep you watching. They show only what they want you to see. They share some personal moments every day and talk to you online. This can feel like a real relationship to you. But they aren’t your friends. What they want is to make money from views, likes, and selling products.
However, you are the one to decide whether they can influence you. Firstly, you should question what you see. Ask yourself, “Is the influencer sharing their real life, or are they selling a product ” Developing critical thinking (批判性思维) skills is important so you don’t get controlled by influencer culture. Secondly, choose to follow those who share meaningful things and ideas. If someone makes you feel bad about yourself, it’s time to stop following them. Finally, take up hobbies that create real-world connections and spend more time with your family and friends.
Remember, social media is just a tool—not a mirror of who you are. You have to know when to step back and stay true to yourself.
Social media influencers greatly affect teenagers. Some bring positive content while 89 . They gaslight followers and show an unreal perfect life, but teens can 90 . First, they can question what they see. Besides, they should choose good ones to follow and 91 . In short, social media is a tool and 92 .

Kids in a Cashless World: Are We Losing the Feel of Real Money
Not too long ago, saving money meant putting coins into a piggy bank or hiding notes in a secret place. Buying snacks meant handing over real cash and feeling every cent you spent. But in today’s world, money doesn’t jingle (叮当) or crinkle (起皱)—it clicks.
For many kids, digital payments are becoming part of everyday life. With smartphones or cards, it’s common to buy things without cash. According to News Hour, about half of kids aged 10 to 12 own a smartphone. Some families are using apps to help kids manage money.
Digital money is easy to carry, and you don’t have to worry about losing notes or carrying coins. But when money becomes just numbers on a screen, it can feel less real. And when money doesn’t feel real, it’s easier to spend too much without thinking.
Scientists say that kids learn best through hands-on experiences. When you count change or hand over cash, you understand its value more clearly. It feels like something you’re giving up. But when you buy something online or tap your phone, nothing feels like it’s missing. That small difference can change the way kids think about money.
Still, many kids are learning how to manage money in this new digital world. When News Hour asked students questions about money, one kid quickly answered that there are 15 quarters in $3.75. Even without using coins, some kids are excellent at money maths. But managing money isn’t just about maths—it’s also about habits (习惯).
To help kids form good habits, many parents use tools to give their children money for doing chores. These tools help kids divide (分开) their money into “spend”, “save”, and “give”, and let parents keep an eye on how the money is used. Some apps also teach lessons about saving and investing (投资). Schools are also taking part, offering classes on money management.
Talking about money at home is just as important. Whether using cash or cards, learning how to plan for spending and save for future goals helps kids feel confident with money.
Living in a cashless world isn’t a bad thing, but it means kids need new skills. With the right support from parents, teachers, and technology, they can grow up to be financially (经济上) smart—even without ever carrying a coin.
93.What did saving money mean not too long ago

As a fan of computer science, Zeng Guolai wanted to buy a classic book about computers. But his parents turned him down. “You won’t have time to read it,” they said.
However, this 16-year-old from the High School finally got it—by lying. As he said the book was required by his school, his parents agreed.
Many teenagers have had similar experiences to Zeng’s. They have lied to their parents for different reasons including getting things they want, staying away from criticism (批评), and winning their parents’ praise (表扬).
But there are some main reasons behind this situation, said Wang Bing, a famous teacher in mental health at Peking University. When students are becoming independent and want more freedom, parents just don’t let go.
“For teenagers, lying seems to be a good way to get freedom and students don’t want to have arguments with their parents, either,” Wang told the newspaper.
In fact, as children grow up, they have less communication with their parents which leads to less mutual (相互的) trust. This is also an important reason for lying, as Wang mentioned.
But unlike many parents who see telling lies as a signal of children becoming rebellious (叛逆的) or “bad”, Wang believed that this action should hardly be called a “moral (道德的) problem”. Rather (相反), it is a way for teenagers to step into the adults’ world—They have long been told to do things, but as they are growing up, they want to challenge social rules and see the results.
Parents should walk in their children’s shoes and guide their children to think positively (正面地), rather than (而不是) simply blame (责备) them when things go wrong. As for teenagers, ________.
97.Did Zeng Guolai get the book he wanted at last
98.Why did many teenagers lie to their parents just like Zeng
99.According to Wang Bing, what are the main reasons why teens lie to their parents
100.What would the writer say at the end of the text (at least 2 points)

Fourteen-year-old Jimmy Cooper and the other boys on the local teenage football team may sometimes lose a game, but they won a fight against bullying (欺凌).
Danny Edwards, the team’s “water boy”, was being bullied at school. Danny has had a speech disorder (语言障碍) since his birth. When he grew up, kids made fun of him for the way he talked and the way he dressed. Each day, Danny went to school in a favourite suit, tie and hat. Danny didn’t think it was a big deal. “I… just feel… really… comfortable in it,” he said.
Jimmy was upset when he found out Danny was being bullied. “I thought to myself, no one should be picked on for the way he looks or speaks.” said Jimmy.
So Jimmy decided to wear the same suit and hat to school, too. “I did it to stand up for Danny and show him that bullying is not right. I wanted him to feel happy and safe and know that anywhere he goes he’ll be treated fairly by his friends,” Jimmy said. “I knew Danny would like it. I told my mum that I didn’t care what people thought about me in school because I was doing it for Danny.”
When Jimmy told the other boys on the team what he was planning, they wanted to be part of it, too. So they planned a “Danny Edwards Appreciation Day (感恩日).”
They decided that on a special day, instead of wearing football jerseys (球衣), they would dress like Danny. Word spread about the special day, and other kids in school decided to show their support, too. On the planned day, they all dressed in suits and ties and met in the school library where they cheered, stomped (踩) their feet, and chanted “Danny! Danny! Danny!”
“I was… really… really happy, and it made… my… day,” said Danny.
101.What made the kids at school make fun of Danny Edwards
