On a cool September evening, I found myself seated around a worn wooden table at a Dungan family’s home in Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by travelers from Spain, Canada, and Russia. The table was set with slices of watermelon as well as cucumber and tomato salads. Our hostess Mrs.Zhang then served us a bamboo basket of steaming jin momo — soft buns similar to Chinese baozi — while explaining how her ancestors had brought wheat growing techniques from northwestern China during the late 19th century. Soon the table was filled with dishes telling silent stories: cucumber salads carrying Gansu flavors and lagman noodles mixing Central Asian vegetables with Shaanxi hand-pulling techniques.
As people drank tea and talked in different languages. I gradually understood this gathering was more than a meal. The Spanish architect beside me was amazed at how food could preserve cultural codes across centuries and borders. The Canadian teacher noted that Mrs. Zhang’s kitchen — where Chinese chopping knives met Kyrgyz clay pots — mirrored today’s globalized world.
The scene reminds me of Lisa Kyung Gross’ research in New York. Her documentation of immigrant chefs shows food’s double magic: Spanish bakers reinvent date cookies by dipping them in Belgian chocolate, adding new charm and flavors to traditional food. As Gross poetically notes, every bite contains layers of history, yet remains open to new understandings.
Perhaps this food magic explains why UNESCO lists 38 food traditions as Intangible Cultural Heritage From Japanese seasonal philosophy to Italian pizza-making skills, these living traditions show how cooking practices maintain identities while encouraging dialogues. That night in Dungan House, the Russian software engineer’s laughter as he struggled with chopsticks perfectly conveyed the message — cultural exchange isn’t about perfection, but shared humanity.
24.What does Mr. Zhang’s explanation of jin momo show
A.The mixture of cooking styles.
B.The spread of Chinese farming skills.
C.The friendship between two countries.
D.The development of traditional Chinese cuisine.
25.Which is the focus of Lisa Kyung Gross research
A.Heritage protection. B.Home-based recipe.
C.Cultural shock. D.Immigrant adaptation.
26.What can we learn from the Russian engineer’s experience
A.Laughter helps to overcome cultural shock.
B.Communication matters more than correct use.
C.Traditional table manners carries humanity code.
D.Cultural exchange requires perfect understanding.
27.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.Ta explain how UNESCO protects cultural heritage.
B.To discuss food as a bridge between different cultures.
C.To describe the cooking techniques of Dungan families.
D.To compare different food traditions in Asia and Europe
The Yellow River is the cradle of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices (设备) set up along the river collect and transmit information to the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪), ”said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
28.What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River
A.To conduct historical research.
B.To create a virtual tourist attraction.
C.To raise public awareness of river protection.
D.To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
29.How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance
A.They record water quality.
B.They improve the river’s beauty.
C.They monitor and report dike movements.
D.They serve as markers for important locations.
30.What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River
A.Entertaining tourists. B.Collecting information on dike conditions.
C.Patrolling and take wildlife photos. D.Testing water quality.
31.What does the underlined word “comprehensive” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Complete. B.Basic. C.Beautiful. D.Natural.
Many people have an immediate negative reaction to the word fat. But according to a new study, fat tissue (组织) itself is very, very important for health. It’s an important place to store the extra energy in our body. Fat tissue is supposed to be stored under the skin. If it can’t go there, it’s going to other places such as your liver, heart or pancreas (胰腺). More fat in those organs could affect how well they function. Exercising regularly over time makes fat tissue a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight.
To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with overweight problem: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. People who had a history of regular exercise in the past had fat cells with features that allowed them to store more fat.
Result from the former group showed several structural changes in fat tissue, including slightly smaller fat cells and more of them, and changes in proteins (蛋白质) that adjust body fat remodeling. However, many of the above changes disappeared when regular exercise stopped. Dr. Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan, said, “This is one of the big reasons why it is so important to be physically active most days. A lot of the body’s exercises help you to keep going longer or push harder in your works.”
The key takeaway of the study is that we’re broadening our understanding of why it is helpful to exercise. There are so many ways to exercise, and figuring out a way to make it part of the daily routine plays an important role. Of course, you should check with your doctor first to make sure it’s safe.
32.What can we learn about fat tissue from Paragraph 1
A.It is most energy-demanding. B.It has little to do with fatness.
C.Its location makes a difference. D.Its function is to control health.
33.How are the participants in the research grouped
A.By their health problem. B.By their body weight.
C.By their workout habit. D.By their personal hobby.
34.What is stressed in Paragraph 3
A.Weight loss depends on less fat tissue. B.Exercise can reshape protein structure.
C.Harder training results in stronger fat tissue. D.Fat tissue is closely related to regular exercise.
35.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Fat tissue is harmful to health. B.Regular exercise improves fat tissue function.
C.Exercise should be done only a few times a week. D.Avoiding weight gain is the key to health.

Dear Terry,
I’m writing to introduce our upcoming book donation event and seek your valuable advice. The event will take place next Monday in our school library. Graduates are encouraged to donate their used books to enrich our library’s collection and help build a culture of knowledge-sharing.
