The Story of Jane Goodall
Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934. As a child, she loved animals and dreamed of going to Africa to study them. In 1960, at the age of 26, she traveled to Tanzania to study chimpanzees in the wild.
Most scientists at that time believed that animals did not have feelings or personalities. But Jane thought differently. She gave names to the chimpanzees instead of numbers. She watched them make and use tools, hug and kiss each other, and form close family bonds. Her discoveries changed how people see animals.
Jane did not have a university degree when she began her research. Later, she earned a PhD from Cambridge University. She wrote many books and gave speeches around the world to encourage people to protect animals and the environment.
In 1977, she started the Jane Goodall Institute to support wildlife research and conservation. She also began a program called Roots & Shoots to teach young people to care for the environment.
