Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard’s
announcements. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement,
whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s
often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers
appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message As best as I can recall, the guard
said something along these lines, “Good Morning, Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the
7:35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And
what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’s right
with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catching my train
this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”
Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the
guard’s excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this,
and then I found the young guard and said, “Are you the guard on the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith ”
The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.” “Well, I really appreciate your
announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other
passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.
There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy
in their work it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to
the benefits that grow from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s
not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home
24. Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements as usual
A. The messages are unattractive. B. The guard’s voice is not clear.
C. They usually feel sleepy. D. They are absorbed in books.
25. What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Patient. B. Cautious. C. Surprised. D. Excited.
26. What would the guard probably talk about with his family when he got home
A. The beautiful weather. B. The recorded message.
C. The train from Penrith. D. The unexpected appreciation.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. An Intelligent Guard. B. A Boring Train Story.
C. A Different Train Announcement. D. A Lovely Morning in Sydney.

Fruit farmers in Okayama, Japan, have managed to make peeling (去皮) a banana optional
by developing a special variety with eatable skin. The peel of their “Mongee bananas” isn’t
particularly tasty, but it’s much thinner and far less bitter than that of regular bananas, making it
100% eatable.
Scientists at D&T Farm in the country’s Okayama Prefecture released the social
media-ready news following months of experimenting with a freezing-and-thawing (解冻)
method, which keeps the banana tree at extremely cold temperatures followed by a dramatic heat
increase. The result is soft and thin skin that hasn’t fully developed. They froze young banana
trees to -60 degrees Celsius, planting them again as they began to thaw. This apparently
activated an ancient part of their DNA, which not only allows the plant to grow in Japan’s cool
climate, but also speeds up its development. While tropical varieties of bananas require two
years to grow large enough for consumption (消费), the Mongee banana needs just four months.
The first bunch of Mongee bananas hit department stores’ shelves in the November of last
year, but getting your hand on one of these incredible fruits remains a huge challenge. D&T
Farm only produces 10 bananas per week, and they only deliver them to the Fruit Corner of
Tenmanya Okayama, a local department store. But even if you happen to find one available,
you’d probably be a bit put off by the price – 648 yen ($5.70) per fruit.
Banana peel is an excellent ingredient that can contain vitamin B6 and magnesium related
to the production of serotonin (血清素). At the same time, it has a positive effect on both brain
and sleep. Research results that ripe fruit peels have a good effect on treating prostatic
hypertrophy (前列腺肥大) have also been published.
John Guterman, a botanist, says, “And what about shipping For most of the fruit’s history,
the peel has provided protection, allowing it to travel long distances. A softer, more bruise-prone
banana would be a step back from hardy banana varieties that travel thousands of miles. In this
sense, the day we all stop peeling bananas and instead bite straight through their skin may still
be a long way away.
pared with regular bananas, Mongee bananas ________.
A. are far easier to peel B. have much sweeter flesh
C. are much more thin-skinned D. have a longer growth period
29. Why is it hard to buy a Mongee banana now
A. It isn’t affordable at all. B. It hasn’t come into the market yet.
C. It is made for certain people. D. Its production ability is still limited.

A. The medical value of banana peel.
B. The nutrition of banana peel.
C. The way of making banana peel sweeter.
D. The studies about how to make banana peel eatable.
31. What does John think of the Mongee banana
A. It should not be widely grown.
B. It won’t be spread widely soon.
C. It indicates the future of fruits with skin.
D. It has no advantage over regular bananas.

Siesta is a Spanish word referring to a nap or rest break usually after lunch. The word
“siesta” comes from the Latin base “sexta”, which means sixth and refers to the sixth hour, or
“sexta hora”, of daylight.
By definition, a siesta takes place six hours after dawn, if the sun rises at 7 am, the “sexta
hora” would take place just after noon. However, most people do not time their siesta so literally.
Traditionally, a siesta takes place after lunch in the mid afternoon. A small Spanish town called
Ador, which still practices a daily siesta, closes all businesses between 2 pm and 5 pm each day.
Historically, Spanish companies that built a two-hour break into the workday schedule made the
working day end around 8 pm, a practice that continues among many Spanish workers today.
Although most people connect the siesta with Spain, its actual birthplace is Italy. Similar
midday nap breaks are common around Mediterranean(地中海) and in many Latin American
countries, where the midday is often hot. Before air conditioning was invented, the siesta offered
a much-needed break from the hottest hours of the day.
In recent years, former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy introduced a plan to end the
siesta, which would allow many workers to end their workdays earlier, making Spain’s standard
work schedule at the same level with its European neighbors.
Although not a widespread practice, some countries outside of the Mediterranean area
currently encourage midday napping. For example, parts of Japan have provided nap pods for
midday breaks, and falling asleep at work is viewed as a positive sign that a person is working
hard. In the US, some sleep researchers are trying to spread the concept of a power nap, which
would allow people to briefly(短暂地) sleep while they are at work.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Note of Love
Everything seemed to have changed for me when I entered high school. I never saw a single
person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. “My brothers and sister all fit
in.” I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school. “Why can’t I ”
Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it
clean ” The last thing I needed was criticism(批评) from my mother. What had happened to the
mother who used to snuggle(偎依) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance,
who thought everything I did was wonderful I didn’t bother trying to explain my unhappiness.
It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word, as I did every afternoon.
Clearing off some space, I sat down at my desk. Yet there was another thing I wasn’t good

at anymore. My grades had dropped along with my confidence. I turned to a new page in my
notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a
mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. “You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper out of my
notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the
floor. I heard my mother’s voice in my head, “Why can’t you keep your room clean ”
By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled(揉皱的) paper. It
gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made, as if it was proof of all my shortcomings.
Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my
unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of
indifference(漠不关心), no one knew what I was really feeling. Who would want to listen
One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief(解脱) not to be met with Mom’s
latest complaint. “Nothing I do is right in her eyes.” I thought. “Or anyone else’s, including
mine.”

读后续写
one possible version:
Paragraph 1:
When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room. Mom
had obviously decided to clean it herself. I was surprised to see the clean floor below my
bed. All the crumpled paper had disappeared. Except one. A single sheet lay in plain view. I
picked up the sheet and recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting, saying “I have found that I
have also been very critical of you lately. For that, I am truly sorry. I only expect that you
are to be your same sweet self.” 【76 词】
Paragraph 2:
I sat down at my desk, staring at those words. A weight seemed to lift from me. I realized that
Mom still loved me the same way. When she got home, I found the confidence to let down my guard
and talk to her about how I felt. She and my father teamed up to offer some ideas that might help, like
joining after-school clubs. It seemed like everything changed in high school, but one heartfelt note set
the stage for the rest of my teenage years.
1. 提示句1:“When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room.”
思考:房间由 “乱” 变 “整洁”,是谁做的?(必然是母亲)母亲还会留下什么?(需设计一个情感载
体,题目中已经给我们提示-字条,以此打破Karole对母亲的固有印象)
2. 提示句2:“I sat down at my desk, staring at those words.”

W: All right, students. ⑩ Your homework for the weekend is to review Chapter 3 and to write a
summary of the most important ideas in the chapter. Next week, we’ll begin our presentations.
M: Excuse me, Ms. Diaz…
W: Yes
M: How long should our summary be
W: It should be one page, but no more than that. Also, remember that when you summarize a
chapter, you must leave your own opinion out.
M: Yes, ma’am. But there are many different views on the Civil War in American history. It is
difficult to summarize anything important without including my opinion at all.
W: A summary only includes the facts. You can use the author’s words directly, but you cannot
3
include your own ideas. For the homework, I just need to see if you understood the main ideas
in the chapter.
M: Should we try to connect these ideas to other things we read this term
W: No. You can do that next week when you give your presentation.

M: Here is the pill. I’ll help you stand up.
W: Can I have a walk around the room or corridor I have stayed in bed all day.
M: Yes, you can! It seems that feeling well again is not such a long process.
W: I have been in hospital for two weeks, haven’t I
M: Yes, and you can leave the hospital tomorrow!
W: Really I’m so happy.
M: I have written a certificate for you.
W: I’m eager to go home! Doctor, what should I do after I go home
M: I have two suggestions. First, avoid any mental stress and have enough rest. Secondly,
examinations should be done regularly.
W: I’m sure I will follow your advice.
M: Complete recovery will take a long time. So you must take care of yourself.
W: I want to thank all the doctors in charge. I’m very grateful to you all.
M: Don’t mention it! That is our duty!

M: Clara Barton was born on December 25th, 1821. When the Civil War began in 1861, she heard
of stories of wounded soldiers. She felt she needed to do something to help them, so she urged
people to donate bandages and medicine and delivered these supplies to the battlefield. Clara
didn’t stop helping when the war was over. She led a group to search for missing soldiers.
This group also worked to identify soldiers killed or missing. After four years of this work,
Clara moved to Switzerland, where she first learned about a group called the Red Cross. This
group worked to help people who were suffering during times of war. In 1873, Clara returned to
the United States. In 1881 she started an American branch of the Red Cross. She served as its
first president for over 20 years. As the result of Clara’s hard work and leadership, the Red
Cross grew. Today, it also helps people suffering as a result of earthquakes, fires, floods, and
other disasters. Clara Barton died on April 12, 1912, but her great contribution, the American
Red Cross, lives on.
