As a hairdresser, Pon Mariappan is fairly skilled, but in his hometown of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, this 42-year-old, is better known for something far more interesting.
In his small salon, which is about 10 square meters, you can see shaving cream cans and aftershave on the shelves, along with other hair-styling tools. Besides these, more than 1,500 books are also piled onto the shelves — including Tamil and English novels, history books, poetry books, autobiographies, and magazines. These books and the hair-styling products are competing for space on the shelves. This special collection of books is something Pon put a lot of love and effort into. It’s a library meant to help his community develop a love for reading and learn more knowledge. “Most customers, many of them senior high or junior students, are busy playing mobile games. I want to encourage them to read instead. Why not offer them something better?” he says.
Being surrounded by books has been Pon’s dream since childhood. He had to drop out in the eighth grade because his family couldn’t afford schooling, but he never lost his eagerness for reading. Before taking up hairdressing, he worked as a laborer and did odd jobs (打零工) to make ends meet — yet he always found time to explore books, which became his escape from daily hardships.
When Pon first organized the library in 2015, he focused on biographies of famous Tamils. Since then, his collection has grown steadily. Most books are bought with his own money, while others are donated. Over the years, his visitors and customers have included politicians, writers and film stars — all impressive figures. As a father of three, Pon wants the younger generation to look beyond their regular school courses. He even offers a discount on salon services to students who read a certain number of pages and write a small summary. “The aim is to foster the hobby of reading — something our youngsters are losing,” he explains.
4. Why did Pon start collecting books and run the library?
A. To make his salon more famous. B. To help his community love reading.
C To attract more customers for haircuts. D. To realize his dream of being a bookseller.
5. What do we know about Pon from Paragraph 3?
A. His family support his schooling. B. He had no time for books due to work.
C. He gave up reading after quitting school. D. Reading has always been his great passion.
6. Which of the following best describes Pon?
A. Honest and creative. B. Responsible and caring.
C. Demanding and strict. D. Knowledgeable and proud.
7. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To describe books in Pon Mariappan’s library. B. To tell a successful story of Pon Mariappan.
C. To present a skilled hairdresser Pon Mariappan. D. To introduce a hairdresser running a salon library.
C
There’s no question about whether sleep is important for heart and brain health. Study after study has shown that it is.
Questions about the importance of how you sleep — on your back, on your side, on your stomach — haven’t been asked nearly as often. But experts say sleep position can indeed matter.
People with heart failure often experience shortness of breath that worsens when they sleep on their left side, said Dr. Rachel Salas, a sleep neurologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep and Wellness in Baltimore, leading many to prefer their right. But she said sleeping on the left side might be better for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Sleeping on the left side also is known to help blood flow in pregnant women.
One of the best-understood connections between sleep position and heart and brain health involves sleep apnea, where breathing stops and restarts during sleep, Redline said. “For people with sleep apnea, sleeping on the back makes their condition worse than sleeping on the side.”
“I think the bottom line for most people is if they have sleep apnea, sleeping on your side, in most cases, may be very helpful,” Redline said. “And if you don’t have sleep apnea or snore (打鼾), sleeping in a position you feel most comfortable in and where you wake least frequently is probably the simplest common-sense advice.”
Most adults should average seven to nine hours of sleep each night, according to the American Heart Association.
“We know now that sleep really touches every body system, including the heart and the brain, and it does so through influencing the health of our blood vessels, the health of our immune system, and much more”, Redline said.
“No matter the position, sleep needs to be a top concern”, she said, and “only you can put sleep first. Nobody else can do that for you.”
8. Why do some people think sleeping on the left side is not good for them?
A. It makes long-term pain more serious.
B. It stops blood flow in pregnant women.
C. It makes gastroesophageal reflux disease worse.
D. It causes shortness of breath for people with heart failure.
9. What does “sleep apnea” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A sleep habit that helps protect the heart. B. A sleep issue where breathing is on and off.
C. A sleep method that prevents brain problems. D. A sleep state that always makes people wake up.
10. What sleep advice is given to people with sleep apnea?
A. They should sleep on their sides. B. They should sleep on their backs.
C. They should sleep on their stomachs. D. They should sleep less than 7 hours.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Can sleep improve the immune system? B. Is sleep position important for health?
C. How many hours of sleep do adults need? D. How can we choose a good sleep position?
D
Last summer, Wonderful Copenhagen, the city’s official tourism organization, launched a four-week pilot CopenPay program to reward visitors for making eco-conscious decisions during their stay. The program offered a simple suggestion, “Do something good for the city, and you will be rewarded in return.”
Visitors are encouraged to give up on the car and explore Copenhagen on foot or by bike, volunteer at an urban farm, help pick up trash in the canals, or choose a plant-based meal. In return, if they can show proof of their contributions through photographs or receipts (收据), they could earn free or discounted perks (福利) including a 70-minute free electric-powered canal tour with Stromma Denmark, free entry to a concert at Urban 13, or a free beer-tasting.
The program’s rewards are selected to showcase the values of Danish life and culture. In addition to its efficient public transportation system, Copenhagen’s bike facility makes it easy to get around on two wheels — one of the city’s most common forms of transportation. During peak hours, it’s common to see crowds of well-dressed cyclists riding along special bike lanes. Recycling is widely practiced with waste-sorting bins found at cafes and public spaces. And restaurants like La Banchina — deeply committed to using only local and seasonal ingredients (食材).
With mass tourism increasingly becoming a problem, this initiative (方案) was designed to encourage visitors to make more sustainable choices. And it worked. According to Wonderful Copenhagen, in 2024 there was a 29 percent increase in bike services compared to the previous year.
“CopenPay is important because it makes sustainable and local initiatives more visible and accessible, not just to residents, but also to visitors who want to experience the city in a more meaningful way,” says Livia Haaland, co-founder and gardener at Oens Have, an organic farm and restaurant in Refshale?en. “It connects people with places that reflect Copenhagen’s values around climate responsibility, community, and innovation.”
At Oens Have, visitors who lend a hand with weeding and harvesting flower heads in the garden can earn a free cup of coffee or tea.
12. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Only giving up cars gets rewards. B. Tourists need proof to get rewards.
C. Tourists cannot get meat when sightseeing. D. Free beer-tasting is the most popular reward.
13. Which of the following goes against the value of Danish life and culture?
A. Responsible. B. Sustainable. C. Mindful. D. Wasteful.
14. Why is CopenPay important?
A. It opens local projects to all. B. It increases cars on the road.
C. It uses free rewards to attract tourists. D. It forces visitors to volunteer on farms.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Copenhagen’s values. B. Mass tourism problems.
C. Rewards in Copenhagen. D. CopenPay rewards green choices.

As senior high students, we were super excited when the school announced the annual Culture Festival. Our class decided to put on a drama show, and the committee chose me and my deskmate Leo to organise it together. On Orientation Day, Leo and I became friends right away, both curious about exploring the school’s impressive facilities. But this time, our first real teamwork soon ran into a problem.
When talking about the drama’s main topic, something that seemed unimportant at first quickly turned into a heated debate. I suggested a story about a former graduate’s volunteer work in a far-away village. I said it matched the school’s tradition of focusing on kindness and responsibility, which our teachers often talked about. However, Leo immediately disagreed. He preferred a fantasy story with intelligent dinosaurs and playful dolphins, which he said would attract the audience. We argued fiercely in the gym after our usual badminton practice, and several classmates who were putting away their rackets (球拍) noticed us. Leo raised his voice a little and said I was too old-fashioned, claiming that keeping to such a common theme would make our show boring. I clenched (攥紧) my fists and replied that his idea had no depth and had nothing to do with the real spirit of the Culture Festival. Neither of us wanted to give in. Our faces were red with anger, and we stormed off in different directions, leaving the unfinished debate hanging in the air and our classmates looking worried. What made things worse was that the committee was waiting for our final decision, which only added to the pressure on both of us.
For almost a week, we walked past each other in silence. Neither of us wanted to break the awkward tension that was like a thick fog between us. The pressure of the coming Culture Festival, which was only two weeks away, grew day by day. The class’s initial (起初的) excitement — once bright and enthusiastic — turned into anxious whispers that followed us around the campus.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文:
Para 1. Finally, Our English teacher, Ms. Lee called us into her office. Smiling warmly, she gestured for us to sit opposite, her calm and soft voice melting some of the tension in our heart. “I heard about your story” she said. She picked up a pen and drew two circles on a piece of paper. “Your idea has soul, Li Hua — it ties to our school’s values. Leo’s has sparkle — it grabs attention. But why not combine them together?” Her words made our eyes widen. We exchanged glances, cheered happily and quickly formed the harmonious practice plan.
Para 2. The next day, our class began to practise the decided drama. Leo and I sat side by side during the practising scene, laughing as we adjusted lines. On the day of the Culture Festival, the audience cheered loudly when the dinosaurs “visited” the village and the kids learned about helping others. After the show, Leo clapped my shoulder, “Great job — we did it together.” Looking at the smiling faces around us, I realized that teamwork isn’t about winning an argument, but about listening and combining strengths. It was a lesson far more precious than any successful performance
