Did you know that tea, one of the most popular drinks in the world, was invented by accident It is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong was the first to discover tea as a drink about 5, 000 years ago.
One day Shen Nong was boiling drinking water over an open fire. Some leaves from a tea plant fell into the water and remained there for some time. It produced a nice smell so he tasted the brown water. It was quite delicious, and so, one of the world’s favorite drinks was invented.
A few thousand years later in the Tang Dynasty, Lu Yu, “the saint of tea”, mentioned Shen Nong in his book Cha Jing. The book describes how tea plants were grown and used to make tea. It also discusses where the finest tea leaves were produced and what kinds of water were used.
Tea has many health benefits. The great doctor Sun Simiao, who is also from the Tang Dynasty, mentioned in one of his works that drinking tea regularly made people energetic.
It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. In England, tea didn’t appear until around 1660, but in less than 100 years, it had become the national drink. Even though many people now know about tea culture, the Chinese are without doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea.

When we are young, we learn that tigers and sharks are dangerous animals. We might be scared of them because they are big and powerful. As we get older, however, we learn that sometimes the most dangerous animals are also the smallest animals. In fact, the animal that kills the most people is one that you are familiar with: the mosquito (蚊子).
While it may seem that all mosquitoes are biters, this is not actually the case. Male mosquitoes eat plant nectar. On the other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal blood. When a female mosquito bites a human being, it transmits (传播) saliva into the blood. This saliva may or may not contain a deadly disease. The result of the bite can be minor or as serious as death.
Because a mosquito can bite many people in its life, it can carry deadly diseases from one person to another very easily. More than 700 million people become sick from these diseases every year. At least 2 million of these people will die from these diseases.
In some households, mosquito net s are placed over beds to protect people against being bitten. Mosquitoes have many natural enemies like bats, birds, dragonflies, and certain kinds of fish. Bringing more of these animals into places where mosquitoes live might help to cut down the number of mosquitoes in that area. This is a natural solution, but it does not always work very well. Mosquitoes can also be killed with poisons or sprays. But these sprays may also harm other plants or animals.
Although mosquitoes may not seem as scary as larger, more powerful animals, they are far more dangerous to human beings. But things are changing. It is highly likely that one day scientists will find a way to keep everyone safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
28.Why does the passage mention dangerous animals like tigers and sharks
A.To compare different animals.
B.To lead into the topic about mosquitoes.
C.To show how dangerous tigers and sharks are.
D.To show people’s misunderstanding of large animals.
29.What can we learn about mosquitoes
A.All the mosquitoes have the same eating habits.
B.Female mosquitoes might transmit diseases to humans.
C.The saliva of female mosquitoes contains deadly diseases.
D.Most people will die if caught by deadly diseases from mosquitoes.
30.What’s paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Scientists are making efforts to kill mosquitoes.
B.Some useful measures are taken to kill mosquitoes.
C.There is no perfect solution to the mosquito problem.
D.Mosquitoes’ natural enemies could protect human beings.
31.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of solving the mosquito problem
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Unclear. D.Negative.
【答案】28.B 29.B 30.C 31.B

根据文章第一段“When we are young, we learn that tigers and sharks are dangerous animals. We might be scared of them because they are big and powerful. As we get older, however, we learn that sometimes the most dangerous animals are also the smallest animals. In fact, the animal that kills the most people is one that you are familiar with: the mosquito (蚊子).(当我们年轻的时候,我们知道老虎和鲨鱼是危险的动物。我们可能害怕它们,因为它们既大又有力量。然而,随着我们长大,我们了解到有时候最危险的动物也是最小的动物。事实上,杀死最多人的动物是你熟悉的:蚊子)”可知,第一段提出了杀死最多人的动物是你熟悉的蚊子,所以文章开头提到老虎和鲨鱼是为了引出文章的主题,即蚊子,故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“On the other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal blood. When a female mosquito bites a human being, it transmits (传播) saliva into the blood. This saliva may or may not contain a deadly disease. The result of the bite can be minor or as serious as death.(另一方面,雌性蚊子以动物血液为食。当雌性蚊子叮咬人类时,它会把唾液注入血液。这种唾液可能含有也可能不含有致命的疾病。叮咬的结果可能很轻微,也可能严重到致命)”可知,雌性蚊子可能会把疾病传播给人类,故选B项。
30.主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“In some households, mosquito net s are placed over beds to protect people against being bitten. But these sprays may also harm other plants or animals.(在一些家庭中,床上会挂上蚊帐,以保护人们不被叮咬。
根据文章最后一段“Although mosquitoes may not seem as scary as larger, more powerful animals, they are far more dangerous to human beings. But things are changing. It is highly likely that one day scientists will find a way to keep everyone safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.(虽然蚊子看起来可能不像更大、更有力量的动物那么可怕,但它们对人类来说要危险得多。但情况正在发生变化。很有可能有一天,科学家们会找到一种方法,让每个人都能免受蚊子和它们携带的疾病的伤害)”可知,作者认为很有可能有一天,科学家们会找到一种方法,让每个人都能免受蚊子和它们携带的疾病的伤害,可推理出作者对解决蚊子问题的未来持乐观态度,认为科学家们会找到一种方法来解决这个问题,故选B项。

Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) has made a remarkable breakthrough with the development of their second-generation mucus (粘液) robot, a creation that has captured the imagination of both the scientific community and the public. This robot, also known as the magnetic (磁性的) mucus robot, is designed to travel through very limited spaces and perform tasks that would otherwise be impossible or require cutting.
The robot is made of a mixture of strong neodymium magnets, borax, and polyvinyl alcohol, which gives it a soft, flexible (灵活的) body that is able to stand dramatic transformations. It’s controlled not by its own power but through external magnetic forces, allowing it to move and change shape as directed. This feature enables the robot to squeeze through tiny gaps as narrow as 1. 5mm, showing its exceptional flexibility and adaptability.
One of the most likely applications of this robot is in medical area. It could possibly enter the human body to get rid of accidentally swallowed foreign objects, such as batteries, which can be highly dangerous if left inside the body. To ensure safety for internal use, the robot is coated with a non-toxic layer of silica, which prevents it from harming human bodies while inside. However, it’s important to note that further testing is required to prove the effect and safety of this approach.
Beyond its medical applications, the mucus robot also shows promise in the fields of biology, electronics, and other areas. It can control objects, monitor human motion, and even repair broken electrical circuits by acting as a makeshift “band-aid”.
The development of this robot is a proof of the creativity and technical prowess of HIT’s research team distinguished by their outstanding research abilities and achievements in technology. This cross-disciplinary approach has resulted in a robot that is not only useful and powerful but also thought-provoking, inspiring discussions about the future of robotics and their potential impact on society.

Waste sorting, a practice gaining global momentum, involves separating different types of garbage to facilitate recycling and reduce environmental harm. Its core goal is to turn “trash” into resources, but many people overlook its broader impacts. 36 . For instance, proper sorting can cut down the amount of waste sent to landfills, thus reducing soil and water pollution.
37 . Rules are not universal — what counts as “recyclable” in one city might be labeled “residual waste(其他垃圾)” in another. In Beijing, for example, plastic bottles go into recyclables, but in some rural areas, they may be mixed with other waste due to limited processing facilities. It’s crucial to check local guidelines first.
Once you know the basics, focus on mastering key categories. Recyclables, such as paper, glass, and metal, are the most familiar. 38 . This not only saves raw materials but also reduces energy consumption in manufacturing new products. Kitchen waste, like vegetable peels and leftover rice, is another important category; it can be converted into nutrient-rich compost for plants.
Hazardous waste is often the trickiest. Items like batteries, paint cans, and expired medicines contain toxic substances that can leach into the environment. Even small amounts, if mixed with other waste, can contaminate entire batches during processing. 39 .
Making waste sorting a habit takes time, but small steps work. Start by placing two bins at home: one for recyclables and one for other waste. Gradually add more as you get comfortable. 40 . Over time, this simple act will become second nature, and you’ll take pride in contributing to a greener planet.
A.Improper sorting, however, can make recycling processes less efficient
B.It also plays a vital role in protecting public health
C.Many schools now teach students about waste sorting from an early age
D.These items must be disposed of through special channels to avoid environmental damage
E.Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours
F.You can also join community workshops to learn tips from experienced residents
G.The first step is to understand local classification standards

We would walk home arm in arm after school, sharing our secrets and hopes.

Finally, I decided to write a heartfelt letter to Lily, explaining everything and expressing my true feelings. I poured out my soul, hoping she would understand that the rumor was just a misunderstanding.
A few days later, I received a letter of reply from Lily. To my relief, she apologized for not believing in me and said she had realized the truth after thinking it over. Our friendship was stronger than ever, and we promised to never let a rumor come between us again.

A 12-year-old girl made her dream of a playground come true, thanks to the kindness and support of Clearfield City officials.
Earlier this year, young Rosili noticed that a new playground at Thornock Park was being built, but the equipment (设备) seemed more suitable for older kids. Worried that she wouldn’t be able to enjoy it with her younger sisters, Rosili began to find a way to solve the problem.
Rosili soon drew her ideal (理想的) playground. With support from her mom, Rosili took her designs to the city hall, where she met with Eric Howes, the city’s community services director. Impressed by the effort and thought Rosili put into her drawings, Howes took time to read each of her drawings. “She put a ton of time into that and a lot of thought, and she showed it from four different views, and that’s amazing.” Howes explained.
Although the Thornock Park playground was already in progress, the city had plans to build a new playground at Bicentennial Park, and Rosili’s designs were taken into the project. So Rosili became part of the project, working with city officials and builders to bring her dream to life. “Every day I would have to go there for another meeting. I would tell my friends, ‘Ah, I can’t wait to go again, woohoo!’” she shared with Fox 13 News.
