Passage 1 Angry Europeans push back against overtourism pressures
“过度旅游”侵蚀欧洲城市 词数 350 建议阅读时间 7分钟
The anti-tourism trend (趋势) in Europe has hit new highs in the past few months. Bloomberg noted the summer of 2025 might be remembered as “the season when Europe turned against tourism”. In Barcelona, Spain, locals used water guns on tourists, reported France 24. In Paris, France, workers at the Louvre Museum went on strike and locked out visitors in June, according to AP News.
Many European cities have been taking on a huge number of tourists. Amsterdam in the Netherlands, with a population of 1 million, had more than 20 million visitors in 2023, noted NPR. Meanwhile, Rome in Italy, home to 4.3 million people, sees 22 million tourists every year, according to a June study by Arizona State University in the US.
Social media is part of the problem, noted Travel and Tour World. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have made certain places super popular and crowded. Viral (走红的) posts create quick demand, leading to short visits focused on taking photos instead of experiencing culture. Also, AI algorithms (算法) in travel apps make planning more similar, sending the crowd to the same places at the same time.
Such crowding has caused housing problems. Short-term rental sites like Airbnb have turned many homes into vacation rentals. This means there are fewer homes available for locals, which drives up housing prices. In Spain, this is a big reason why housing prices have risen by 85 percent over the past decade (十年), said CNN. “Tourism has become such a dominant (占支配地位的) part of the economy that locals feel like they don’t count anymore,” Xavier Font, a researcher at the UK’s University of Surrey, told France 24.
The environmental effect is another factor. In 2024, three Cyclades islands in Greece were named among Europe’s seven most endangered heritage sites because of overtourism. On top of that, bad tourist behavior (行为), like leaving graffiti (涂鸦), makes the problems worse.
Governments are trying various solutions. For example, Greece’s Santorini only allows 8,000 cruise (乘船游览) visitors per day, down from around 17,000. Barcelona plans to ban (禁止) holiday apartment rentals by 2028.

Passage 2 Young people are choosing comfort and creativity over elegance
“丑鞋”为何能获得年轻人青睐?词数 303 阅读时间 6分钟
Once, fashion was all about beautifully designed, elegant (优雅的) shoes, with cool young people filling their closets with high heels and white sneakers. But lately, things have changed. Shoes that were once called “ugly”, like Crocs and Birkenstocks, are now popular for everyday wear among the youth. Even celebrities, such as Blackpink’s Jennie and Chinese actress Liu Yifei, are embracing these so-called “ugly” shoes.
So, why do people love these “ugly” shoes
One of the reasons, Xinhua reported, is how comfortable they are. Birkenstocks, for example, are special because they have flexible (有弹性的) footbeds. After people wear the shoes for a while, the footbeds slowly change to fit their feet.
The choice is also about self-expression. In a world where people are often asked to look perfect, wearing a pair of “ugly” shoes gives us a break, reminding us that fashion can be fun. Take Crocs, for example: Their chunky soles (厚实的鞋底) and holes might seem strange, but when decorated with colorful shoe charms (鞋花), they become a fun and unique way to stand out.
In an interview with Vogue Magazine, Carolyn Mair, a professor of psychology for fashion, said that our interest in “ugly” shoes also comes from how our brain works.
“Our brains often are attracted to the unusual over the simplistic,” Mair explained. “Psychologists have established (证实) that we don’t pay attention to what’s ‘normal,’ usual or familiar because it presents no danger. However, when we encounter (遇到) something novel, our attention is drawn to it. So, in addition to the comfort value of these shoes, perhaps it is the desire for attention that motivates wearers.” In the fashion world, this bold (大胆的), eye-catching way of dressing is called “peacocking”.
Young people love “ugly” shoes not because they hate beauty, but because they want to break traditional fashion rules, and that’s perfectly fine. By blending (融合) comfort, creativity and a dash of humor (滑稽), they’re redefining (重新定义) what’s cool.

Passage 3 Guangdong deals with mosquitoes in new ways
广东防蚊战术出“新招” 词数 300 阅读时间 6分钟
Usually, mosquitoes (蚊子) are just an annoying part of summer. But this year, they’re causing more than just bites. Thousands of people in Guangdong province have caught Chikungunya fever (基孔肯雅热, CHIK), a disease spread by mosquitoes. Symptoms (症状) include fever and joint (关节) pain.
Guangdong has tried different methods to stop Chikungunya from spreading. One is a “mosquito versus mosquito” biological strategy.
Mosquitoes spread viruses (病毒) when they feed on human blood. But only female mosquitoes bite and drink blood. Controlling the female mosquito population at its source can reduce the risk of disease.
To reduce the number of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes (白纹伊蚊), which spread CHIK, the company Guangzhou Wolbaki Biotech raises “beneficial (有益的) mosquitoes”: male mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia bacteria. When these males mate with (交配) wild females without the bacteria, their eggs can’t develop properly. This prevents more mosquitoes from breeding (繁殖), helping to lower the population, explained Gong Juntao, deputy general manager and technical director of the company.
The Zhongshan School of Medicine at Sun Yat-sen University has also put out 75 Toxorhynchites splendens (华丽巨蚊) in Nanshan township of Foshan. Professor Zhang Dongjing said that this species (物种) is the natural enemy of Aedes albopictus. Their breeding sites are very similar, and a baby Toxorhynchites splendens can catch and eat 80-100 Aedes albopictus babies in its lifetime. What’s more, these mosquitoes don’t bite or feed on blood – they only eat nectar (花蜜), making them safe for people.
In addition to the “mosquito versus mosquito” strategy, Foshan's government has let out more than 5,200 mosquito-eating fish into parks to help prevent and control the spread of CHIK. The fish feed on mosquito eggs and babies, helping to control their numbers, said Zhang Huabin, a local official. Data have shown that within three months, the number of mosquito babies in the water should drop by over 60 percent.

Passage 4 词数 290 建议阅读时间 6分钟
I’ve always struggled with screen time. I don’t like how it affects my sense of the real world. So a few years ago, I decided to do a sketch (素描) every day.
I had always wanted to draw, but felt shy because I was bad at it. Then I bought a few notebooks: a small one for my jacket pocket and larger ones for my bedside and kitchen table. As no one would see my drawings, I didn’t care about what anyone thought.
One day, I took a notebook and a pencil to the Cornish cliffs. I spent 10 minutes drawing cows and wild ponies (小马). Standing there, pencil in hand, I felt like a fool, but I had started. It was a happy moment.
I had never drawn a pony before, but one sketch turned out OK for a beginner. Next, I drew our cat sleeping and our dog, Foxy, watching a mouse in the kitchen. Beside each sketch, I wrote the date and little notes. Having the pencils and sketchbooks nearby meant these small moments built up. Within weeks, what might have just been photos on my phone became a personal diary on paper.
My favorite drawings are often of people. Our daughter, Elizabeth, gets angry when she realizes I’m drawing her. Drawing strangers at airports or in cafes is fun. I enjoy the challenge of finishing before they move.
Many sketches are bad, but quick ones turn out well because I stop overthinking.
Drawing each day means I spend less time on my phone. It slows things down and helps me focus. It makes me happier and more patient. In two years, when our daughter leaves home, I’ll look back at these sketches and remember our time together.
1. Why did the author begin sketching daily
A. To impress others. B. To overcome shyness.
C. To reduce phone usage. D. To improve drawing skills.
2. How did the author feel during her first sketch
A. Confident but tired. B. Foolish but joyful.
C. Nervous and regretful. D. Bored and impatient.
3. What does the author enjoy most about drawing strangers
A. Showing their emotions. B. Creating detailed paintings.
C. Completing sketches quickly. D. Drawing without being noticed.
4. What benefit does the author get from sketching daily
A. Increased patience. B. Stronger family ties.
C. Better social connections. D. Improved art understanding.
