Fun Things to Do in High School
Learn another language
(2024福建南平高级中学期中)Your school might be holding foreign languages classes, so this is a great way to start your language learning journey! If you want more self-paced learning, apps like Duolingo are easily accessible(可使用的) on our mobile phones. As our world becomes more interconnected, it's always good to learn another language or two.
Aim for a semester(学期) of straight A
This can be a difficult task but not impossible to achieve, as long as you put in the right amount of work and effort. If you are struggling(挣扎) with your grades, you can host or join group studies with your classmates!
Don't be disheartened if you are not able to get an A in a semester. What's important is having the drive to go forward. As a famous person once said, “He who would climb a ladder must begin at the bottom.”
Experience another culture
Culture and tradition are something that all humans share. No matter where we come from, we always bring our culture with us. People coming from different cultures may be among your friends or neighbours.
You can go to a museum, read a book, or try new food in your area. Remember to keep an open mind and take the time to learn about them.
Bring a shareable treat to class
If you know your way around the kitchen, you can impress your class by making and bringing them a delicious treat! Not only will this make their stomachs happy, but you'll also bond(联系) the whole class together. Just don't forget to check with your teacher first before bringing one.
1. What should you do if you want to learn a language at your own speed
A. Go to a museum to read books.
B. Attend another language class.
C. Learn it on an app like Duolingo.
D. Join group studies with your classmates.
2. What's the key if you can't get an A in a semester
A. Keeping an open mind.
B. Asking your teachers for help.
C. Changing your study method.
D. Having the drive to go forward.

B. Making your teacher angry and anxious.
C. Making some students have a stomach ache.
D. Making your classmates happy and united.

I attended a Catholic(天主教的) grammar school for nine years. Later I decided to go to the public high school that I now attend. Why did I choose a public high school
The main purpose of going to school is to receive a good education that will help us become successful in the future. Both private and public schools give this opportunity. But public schools and private schools each give an entirely different social experience. The social experience, in my opinion, is much more important than the academic(学业的) experience, especially for a boy like me.
In my grammar school, most of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability. Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform(统一的) clothes, have uniform hairstyles and learn at the same pace. Growing up, this is what I expected all schools were like. For nine years I didn't know that people of different religions(宗教) and learning paces existed in the real world. But the fact is that there are more types of people than Catholics and quick learners. For this reason, I decided to try something new by attending a public high school.
My freshman year of high school was an amazing eye-opener for me. I met different types of people. I have met people with long hair, short hair, black hair and purple hair. I have met people who are two years ahead of everyone else, and others who are two years behind. There are musicians, bookworms and others with interests outside the school. People can be whoever they want to be.
Meeting so many different students and teachers with so many different interests made me much more interested in meeting more people. This experience made me know how important the social part of a public high school really is. In the future, when I go to college and begin my career, I will be meeting and working with people who have different backgrounds. For this reason, I will never regret the decision I have made.
4. Why did the author decide to go to a public high school
A. Because he wanted to become better at his studies.
B. Because he didn't want to learn grammar any longer.
C. Because he wanted to gain useful social experience.
D. Because his parents couldn't afford to send him to the private school.
5. In the Catholic grammar school, the author .
A. often changed his hairstyle
B. had a terrible academic experience
C. often refused to wear uniform clothes
D. seldom met many different types of people
6. What do we learn about students in the author's grammar school
A. Their academic experience isn't very different.
B. They can usually do whatever they like.
C. They know all about the real world.
D. None of them studies very hard.
7. In the author's opinion, studying at the public high school will help him .
A. apply to a good college B. become what he truly is
C. enjoy better social life in the future D. have a good academic experience

(2024广东外语经贸大学实验中学月考)Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the materials. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources(资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention(干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
8. What may the students start worrying about before an exam
A. Whether they can pass the exam.
B. What other students do during the exam.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the exam paper.
9. What is the solution developed by researchers
A. Asking the students to ignore the test.
B. Asking the students to focus on the test.
C. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D. Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
10. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test .
A. became less nervous before the test
B. were better at controlling their feelings
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
11. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit.
B. We can only write about our worries right before an exam.
C. The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.
D. It doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam.

(2025福建厦门外国语学校月考)I have quite a bit of experience with Toastmasters, an organization aiming to help people overcome speech anxiety. I joined many years ago with the hope of improving my public speaking. After one of my speeches, the comments I received were harsh. Constructive or not, the critique(评论) was hard to take. I felt my feelings were hurt.
I learned many things from my time with Toastmasters, and one was the value of good feedback. Welcoming the critique of others is hard for adults, even when it's well-intentioned. So naturally, we can expect that children will also struggle with it. But the feedback our children receive from teachers and parents is important to their growth and development. So as parents, we must learn how to deliver our feedback effectively, and we'll need to train our children on how to accept it with openness and wisdom.
The way parents deliver their feedback is as important as the specific words used. It's possible to have good intentions, but when feedback is poorly given, it can be harmful and not helpful.
It's important to create a welcoming, safe environment in the home for intaking and processing feedback. Especially between a child and parent, the feedback needs to be healthy, constructive and regular.
The words used are also important. In a New York Times article written by Dr Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at the Wharton School, he shares that it is “22 to 29 per cent more effective” to encourage children with nouns than verbs, but when it comes to giving negative feedback, it's generally better to use verbs.
A parent's feedback provides the scaffolding(脚手架) for how a child will manage their inner monologue. Consider, as an example, a discussion you may have with your child about their goals. Your feedback can encourage them not just to focus on where they are now but to reflect on how far they've come. This kind of feedback can spur them on to reach the finish line.
12. Why does the author mention his experience with Toastmasters
A. To tell us what is good feedback.
B. To tell us to join Toastmasters.
C. To show the main function of feedback.
D. To show the necessity of proper feedback.
13. Which of the following feedback is effective according to Dr Adam Grant
① You're a big helper. ② You're a poor math learner. ③ You've been helpful this afternoon. ④ You didn't do well on this math test.
A. ①② B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ③④
14. What does the underlined word “spur” in the last paragraph mean
A. Limit. B. Monitor. C. Persuade. D. Inspire.
15. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. The Way to Respond to Feedback
B. The Value of Accepting Feedback
C. How to Give Effective Feedback
D. How to Become a Better Speaker

A
根据Learn another language部分第二句“If you want more self-paced learning, apps like Duolingo are easily accessible on our mobile phones.”
Aim for a semester of straight A部分第二段第一、二句“Don't be disheartened if you are not able to get an A in a semester. What's important is having the drive to go forward.”
Bring a shareable treat to class部分第一、二句“If you know your way around the kitchen, you can impress your class by making and bringing them a delicious treat! Not only will this make their stomachs happy, but you'll also bond the whole class together.”
根据第二段最后一句“The social experience, in my opinion, is much more important than the academic experience, especially for a boy like me.”和第三段最后两句“But the fact is that there are more types of people than Catholics and quick learners. For this reason, I decided to try something new by attending a public high school.”
根据第三段第一句“In my grammar school, most of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability.”
根据第三段第一、二句“In my grammar school, most of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability. Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform clothes, have uniform hairstyles and learn at the same pace.”
根据最后一段第二、三句“This experience made me know how important the social part of a public high school really is. In the future, when I go to college and begin my career, I will be meeting and working with people who have different backgrounds.”
根据第一段第四句“The students start worrying about the results.”
根据第二段第二句“Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.”
根据最后一段最后一句“Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.”
根据第二段第一句“I learned many things from my time with Toastmasters, and one was the value of good feedback.”
由此可知,① You're a big helper.(用名词表示鼓励)和④ You didn't do well on this math test.(用动词进行负面反馈)是有效的反馈。
根据画线词上一句“Your feedback can encourage them not just to focus on where they are now but to reflect on how far they've come.”

与下文“People often stay together because they have similar interests.”
19. E 根据上文“A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor.”
根据本段内容,尤其是第一句“You like it when people use your name, and so do other people.”

My Best Friend
It's true that everyone has his or her best friend. My best friend is Li Ping, who is a lively and easy-going girl in my class. Not only does she do well in her academic subjects, but she is also ready to help others.
Undoubtedly, what brings us together are common interests and hobbies. There are two things that we enjoy doing together: reading literary works and listening to classical music. More importantly, we share similar views on life and the world around us.
As human beings, we need family affection as well as friendship. Without friends, our life would be like a wild desert.
