Having lived in California until 1970, my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude(震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0. There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown on the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger, I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us(my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the famous landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer—something like, “Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father.” Minutes later, I was safe outside.
4. What message does the passage mainly tell us
A. A new film about an earthquake.
B. The survival of an earthquake.
C. Three earthquake experiences.
D. The rescue of children in an earthquake.
5. The earthquakes the author has experienced .
A. all caused bodily harm B. are all recorded on a website
C. all measured more than 6.0 D. all happened in California
6. When the first earthquake happened, the author .
A. was staying with his daughter B. was planting fruit trees
C. held on to a tree for hours D. was in a hotel
7. What does the underlined part “the famous landmark” refer to
A. A church. B. Disneyland.
C. A building destroyed by an earthquake. D. The place where the author was born.

Several days of unusually warm weather in northern Greenland have caused rapid melting(融化). “Temperatures have been running around 15.5℃. It is warmer than normal for this time of year,” scientists said. The amount of ice that melted in Greenland between July 15 and July 17 alone—6 billion tons of water per day—would be enough to fill 7.2 million Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to the report from the National Snow and Ice Data Centre. Put another way, it was enough to cover the whole state of West Virginia with a foot of water.
For the scientists out on the ice sheet(冰盖), the warmth has been alarming. “It really makes me anxious,” said Kutalmis Saylam, a scientist who is now working in Greenland. “Yesterday, we could hang about in our T-shirts, which was not really expected. Since Greenland holds enough ice, sea level would rise by 7.5 metres around the world if ice all melted.”
In 2020, scientists found that Greenland's ice sheet had melted beyond the point of no return. “No efforts to prevent global warming can stop it from finally breaking into small parts,” said researchers.
Aslak Grinsted, a climate scientist, said that they were trying to get flights into the camp so they can ship out the ice cores(冰芯) they had recently collected. But the warmth is destabilizing the landing site. “The weather we are seeing right now is too hot for the ski-equipped planes to land,” Grinsted said. “So we store the ice cores in large caves we have made into the snow to protect it from the heat of the summer.” Scientists made use of the abnormal warmth while they were waiting, playing volleyball in their shorts on an ice sheet at the top of the world.
Grinsted referred to the temperatures as a heat wave, and noted that the possibility of temperatures getting this hot was clearly connected to global warming.
8. How does the author support the topic of Paragraph 1
A. By exploring reasons. B. By making comparisons.
C. By designing the numbers. D. By doing some experiments.
9. What did Kutalmis mean in Paragraph 2
A. He disliked wearing a T-shirt.

A. Quitting. B. Improving. C. Sheltering. D. Destroying.
11. What will the author probably do in the following paragraph

B. Describe how to ship out the ice core.
C. Call on people to protect the environment.
D. Plan to organise a sports meeting on ice.

(2024广东广州二中期中)It was raining like nothing before when Ehdaa Bujeldain, an English teacher living with her family in the mountains of Derna in eastern Libya, heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion(爆炸). Later they learned that a dam(大坝) in Derna had broken down under the pressure of running water. For the next four days, they had no power or Internet, and it was only recently that they started to fully understand of the damage caused by the floods.
“Half of the city has been destroyed. My mum's relatives, my friends, my co-workers—they are all gone. Now we, the survivors, are just ghosts in shells,” says Bujeldain, whose sadness can be easily told from her blank expression.
Five days have passed since the terrible flooding in Derna, Libya's Red Crescent organisation estimated that 11,300 people have died, while the city's mayor believes the number of deaths could be as high as 20,000.
Derna is a coastal city with a seasonal river called the Wadi Derna. Despite the abnormally heavy rain, people living near the river had little warning before the floodwaters came rushing in on that terrible morning. United Nations aid chief Martin Griffiths described the scale of the flood as “appalling(令人惊骇的)” and blamed the flood partly on sudden climate change.
Now international aid teams are arriving in Derna, but they face challenges due to damaged roads, lack of access to power, water, and fuel. Tarhoni, doctor of the rescue team, warns that the most difficult weeks lie ahead. “One disaster is done and there is another to come,” he says. “The thousands and thousands of people who lost everything—these people now need comfort, they need company, they need psychological support.”

(2024福建龙岩期中)If you're one of those people planning to do something helpful in honour of Earth Day, you may be wondering what 36 (exact) you can do. We've got 10 great 37 (way) to roll up your sleeves and get to work, whether you have five minutes, five hours or want to form habits that will last a lifetime.
Since our cars are some of the 38 (great) sources of pollution in our daily lives, it makes sense to start there.
