(2024江苏海门中学阶段检测)If you are dreaming of visiting one of those picture-perfect European towns filled with old-world attractiveness and scenic beauty, here is a look at the most beautiful small towns in Europe.
Manarola
Manarola, Italy, is filled with rainbow-coloured homes along the Mediterranean coast. This attractive fishing town is famous for its unbelievable wine, and the paintings. There are no cars here, no traffic lights, or traffic noise. You can drive to Manarola, but you will have to park just outside the town and then take a shuttle bus or walk in on foot.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, is an attractive mountain town, once two separate towns, one Roman and the other Teutonic. The 1936 Winter Olympics forced them to become one, though the two sides still have different characters. The town dates back to the 15th century AD, filled with narrow streets lined with historic three or four-story buildings painted with religious scenes.
Marsaxlokk
The energetic trading port of Marsaxlokk, Malta, was built in 900 BC. Today, this picture-like town is the main supplier of fish to the island nation that sits in the Mediterranean Sea. It has no modern buildings to ruin its attractiveness. With such quiet surroundings, including the traditional fishing boats, it is a particularly charming place to visit.
Portmagee
In a country filled with beautiful towns, Portmagee, is a standout, sitting on the southwest coast of Ireland. It was a Sunday morning, and I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn't invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck It's a beautiful day.”
“No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning.
My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and went. I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital.”
When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father's injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there's no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨) might have pierced(穿透) a lung...”
My mother may have said more, but I didn't hear. I didn't hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled(愤慨地说出) those words at him earlier in the day
It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him.
“Daddy... I am so sorry...”
“It's okay, sweetheart. I'll be okay.”
“No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning ”
My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said, “Sweetheart, I don't remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. I remember kissing you goodnight the night before, though.” He managed a weak smile.
My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on.

Doctors say you had better use it before you lose it. The more you sit each day, the more chance you have of getting sick.
Richard Rosenkranz of Kansas State University was among the researchers. He said people who sat for long periods were at great risk of diseases when compared with those who sat less. He said that was especially true for some chronic(慢性的) diseases.
Richard Rosenkranz studied the relationship between sitting and chronic diseases in middle-aged Australian men. He worked with researchers from the University of Western Sydney. They examined the health records of more than 63,000 men from New South Wales. The men were between the ages of 45 and 65. The men reported about what diseases they had, or did not have. And they kept record of the amount of time each day that they sat.
The study also showed that exercising every morning for 30 minutes did not reduce the health risk if you spend the next eight hours sitting at the desk. Mr Rosenkranz said it was important to make sure you exercise. But he said it was also important to find ways not to sit so much during the day.
Many jobs today require sitting and working at the desk all day. James Levine works at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. He suggests working while standing at high table some of the time instead of sitting at a desk. Dr Levine also suggests standing while using the telephone or eating. Or he advises walking with the people you work with for an on-foot meeting. (2025河南郑州一中模拟)Efforts were underway in Bangladesh to deliver food and drinking water to millions of people struggling after a heavy rain led to flooding, which struck a quarter of the country. There are around 3.5 million Bangladeshis at risk of river flooding every year according to a 2023 report by the World Bank.
On Wednesday, at least 17 of the country's 64 districts(地区), mostly in the northern and north-eastern Sylhet, were suffering from the natural disaster. 第二节 阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Americans spend almost four hours a day on their phones. 16 Instagram is now a breeding ground(温床) for photo sharing, especially thanks to its story feature. Now people aren't just posting their best pictures, they're sharing every step of their journey.
Take me for example—I blog about travel for a living. I'm pretty much done with trip reports, but I still share my travels on Instagram Stories. During a trip to Turkey last summer, I realised quickly that I wasn't seeing and experiencing things first-hand. 17 I had my phone in hand almost the entire time to record and share the “experience”.
There was one day on my trip when I decided to walk from the Bomonti area to Taksim Square. At first, I had my eyes glued to the phone to navigate(导航) my way. Then I began taking pictures of interesting things and distractedly moving along. Then it hit me: This isn't safe. Also, I'm not taking in all the sights and passing by great shops without looking at anything. 18
My arms were free to swing(摆动) at my sides and I made eye contact with people who smiled and said hello. I smelled the delicious wet burgers and stopped to grab one. 19 More importantly, I felt the energy of the city and took in all the sights and sounds. I don't have recordings of most of it, but it lives in my memory. It was one of my favourite days of the trip—just walking through Istanbul on my own and feeling the city with all my senses.
Keeping our eyes glued to our screens, we're missing out on the true beauty around us. 20 It has to be experienced through all five senses and spending too much of it looking at our phones, trying to share it with the world, ruins that.
A. Vacations are no exception.
B. We're too absorbed in our journey.
C. Travel isn't just experienced through the eyes.
D. So I put my phone away for the rest of the way.
E. I found a lovely scarf and bought it at a nice price.
F. I was viewing everything through my phone's camera.
G. People travel to destinations just because they're “Instafamous”.
