Sometimes, they even stay up late to ___17___ their lessons—especially before important tests—which makes them feel ___18___ and unfocused the next day.

Should Teens Have Their Own Mobile Phones
More and more families are arguing about one question: Should teenagers have their own mobile phones A survey of 500 parents and teens in China shows different ideas, and the debate is getting more heated as phones become a daily necessity.
For parents who agree, 78% say phones help them stay in touch with their kids, especially when they’re not together. “I work late often,” says Mr. Zhang, a father of a 14-year-old. “With a phone, I can call my daughter to make sure she gets home safely after school, and she can text me if she needs help.” Some parents also think phones let teens look up study materials quickly, like checking new words in English class or math formulas they forget.
But 65% of parents who disagree worry most about screen time. They say teens often spend hours playing games or watching short videos instead of doing homework or reading books. Mrs. Li, a mother of two, shares her worry: “My son used to finish homework in an hour, but now he takes three hours because he keeps checking his phone for new messages or game updates.” They also fear teens might see bad information online, like rude comments or unsafe challenges.
Teens have their own voices too. 82% of teens with phones say the device makes their life easier. “I can chat with my friends about school projects when I’m at home, and I can even join online study groups to review lessons,” says 15-year-old Liu Tao. But 30% admit they sometimes get distracted (分心的) by phones. “Last month, I missed a math test review because I was playing a phone game and lost track of time,” says 13-year-old Chen Yu. “I got a low score on the test, and I regretted it a lot.”
31. Why do most parents agree to give teens mobile phones
A. Phones help teens finish homework faster.
B. Phones let parents keep in touch with teens.
C. Phones allow teens to play games to relax.
D. Phones help teens make more friends.
32. What do parents who disagree worry about most
A. Teens will spend too much time on phones.
B. Teens will lose their phones easily.
C. Phones will make teens’ eyesight worse.
D. Phones will cost too much money.
33. What can we learn from Chen Yu’s story
A. Phones can help teens with math review.
B. Teens often use phones to chat about projects.
C. Phones may distract teens from their studies.
D. Teens need phones to get home safely.

Stress is a common issue for teenagers worldwide, but how they handle it can vary a lot by country. A recent study by a global youth organization compared stress-relief habits of teenagers from four countries—China, the US, Japan, and Germany—and found some interesting cultural differences.
China: 62% of Chinese teens said they prefer talking to their classmates when stress hits. They explained that classmates face the same school pressure, like homework deadlines and exam worries, so they “get each other” better than family sometimes. Some even form small study groups to share stress and solve problems together.
The US: Most American teens (58%) choose physical activity to beat stress. Popular choices include basketball, swimming, or even skateboarding. They believe exercise helps them “let out steam” and clears their minds—many said they feel more energetic and ready to study after a short workout.
Japan: 45% of Japanese teens turn to music as their go-to stress reliever. Many listen to calm J-pop or classical music while doing homework, and some learn to play instruments like the piano or guitar in their free time. They say music helps them “slow down” and forget busy school days for a while.
Germany: Many German teens (51%) like to spend time outdoors to relax. On weekends, they often go hiking in nearby forests, ride bikes along rivers, or just sit in city parks with friends. They think being close to nature makes their stress “disappear quickly” and helps them feel more peaceful.
The study also found that only 15% of teens in all four countries keep their stress to themselves. Most said they learned from family or teachers that hiding stress makes it worse—instead, asking for help or doing something fun is a better way to feel better.
34. Which activity do most American teens use to deal with stress
A. Talking to classmates B. Doing sports
C. Listening to music D. Spending time outdoors
35. Why do Chinese teens like to talk to their classmates about stress
A. Classmates can help them with homework.
B. Classmates understand their school pressure better.
C. Classmates are more willing to go outdoors with them.
D. Classmates often share calm songs with them.
36. What percentage of teens in the four countries keep stress to themselves
A. 15% B. 45% C. 51% D. 62%

World Youth Day: Planting Trees for a Greener Future
Every year on August 12, World Youth Day celebrates young people’s power to make the world better. This year, a big activity called “Teens Plant Trees” went viral (走红) in over 30 countries—more than 500,000 teenagers joined in to plant trees and fight climate change.
The idea started with a 16-year-old student from India, Riya Patel. “Last year, I saw a forest near my home turn into a shopping mall,” Riya said. “I thought, if adults can cut down trees, teens can plant more.” She shared her plan online, and soon teens from Brazil, Nigeria, Germany, and China joined her.
In China, over 80,000 teens took part. In Beijing, a group of students from No. 5 Middle School planted 200 young trees in a park. “We dug holes, put in the saplings (树苗), and watered them together,” said 14-year-old Mia Zhang. “It was tiring, but when I thought these trees will grow and clean the air, I felt proud.” In Shanghai, some teens even made posters to tell people how trees help reduce pollution.
The activity didn’t just plant trees—it also taught teens about environmental protection. “Before, I didn’t know one tree can absorb (吸收) 10 kilograms of CO a year,” said 15-year-old Li Hao from Guangzhou. “Now I tell my family to save paper and turn off lights to save energy too.”
Organizers say they hope “Teens Plant Trees” will become a yearly event. “Young people care about the planet, and small actions like planting a tree can make a big difference,” said Riya Patel.
37. What is the main purpose of the “Teens Plant Trees” activity
A. To celebrate World Youth Day with fun games.
B. To plant trees and fight climate change.
C. To teach teens how to grow saplings quickly.
D. To help teens make friends from other countries.
38. Who started the “Teens Plant Trees” activity
A. A group of students from Beijing No. 5 Middle School.
B. 14-year-old Mia Zhang from China.
C. 16-year-old Riya Patel from India.
D. 15-year-old Li Hao from Guangzhou.
39. What did Li Hao learn from the activity
A. How to make posters about environmental protection.
B. That one tree can absorb 10 kg of CO every year.
C. That planting trees is easy and doesn’t need effort.
D. That shopping malls are more important than forests.

The Secret of AI: How Does It "Think" Like Humans
Have you ever wondered how your phone recognizes your face to unlock, or how an AI chatbot answers your questions Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere in our lives, but its "thinking" process is still a mystery to many. 40 Let’s break it down in simple terms.
First, AI needs "food" to grow, and that food is data. 41 For example, to teach an AI to tell cats from dogs, scientists feed it thousands of photos of cats and dogs. Each photo is labeled (标注) so the AI knows which is which. This helps the AI build a "knowledge base" in its system.
Second, AI learns through practice, just like we do. 42 This process is called "training". During training, the AI makes mistakes—like mixing up a cat with a small dog—but it corrects itself using the labeled data. Over time, it gets better and better at telling the difference.
43 While we use our brains to process information, AI uses chips (芯片) as its "brain". Some chips are like big kitchens with many cooks, working together to handle lots of data quickly. Others are like Lego blocks, which can be rearranged for different tasks, such as translation or playing games.
However, AI is not as smart as humans in all ways. 44 It doesn’t have real feelings or creativity. For example, an AI can write a poem, but it doesn’t understand the emotion behind the words. It just uses patterns it learned from data.
AI is a powerful tool that helps us do things faster and easier. By understanding how it works, we can use it better in the future!
A. Unlike humans, AI can’t learn without data.
B. It doesn’t think in the same way we humans do.
C. Third, AI needs "power" to work—its "brain" is AI chips.
D. AI is becoming more and more popular in our daily life.
E. We learn from books, teachers, and experiences; AI learns from data.
F. Many scientists are working hard to make AI think like humans.
G. It can’t come up with new ideas that haven’t been in the data it learned.
