The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling. This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100 people every hour! In Poland the population is also falling because the people are leaving to work in other countries.
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe people, especially educated women, have a different attitude to children from their parents. “I have one child and she is enough for me,” said Galina, a doctor from Moscow. Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all. “I don’t want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,” said 19-year-old student Hana from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18—24-year-old women everywhere in Europe.
In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of people, usually aged between 20 and 30, are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and since then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy.
Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France, women now receive nearly $1000 a month for a year if they have a third child.
1.What does Galina do
2.Doesn’t Hana want to have any children at all
3.Why is the population in Poland going down (写出一条原因即可)
4.How does the French government encourage people to have larger families now
5.Is a population decline (下降) in some areas good or bad Why or why not

Modern media also plays an important role in educating the public about the needs of the disabled and also changing society’s image of them, so there is greater focus on their special abilities rather than on their disabilities.
In fact, the society’s most disabled people provide all of us with important lessons. They show us confidence, creativity and positivity. The loser will fail 99 times and then give up. To succeed, you must be patient and never give up. You must always learn from your failures, and move on.

At Shanghai Hongkou Library, there is a guestbook where readers can write their thoughts. Some people say the air conditioning is too cold. Others mention noisy children in the reading room. Some talk about the water quality or lack of toilet paper.
What’s special is that every message gets a reply from the library staff. A blogger shared this online and called it “Doraemon’s message book.” The video quickly got thousands of likes and comments.
People love it because the library listens. It shows that good public service isn’t just about money or big plans—it’s about caring about people.
The library moved the guestbook from the front desk to a quiet corner. This way, readers can write freely without feeling watched.
The staff check the book regularly. When someone writes a message, they send it to the right department and write back.
Some ideas are used right away. For example, a reader suggested adding chairs in the eating area, and the library did it. When they can’t do something, they explain why. For example, they won’t add a microwave because it’s not safe.
This simple guestbook shows the warmth of the city. It proves that what really matters is whether people feel seen and heard.
21.What did people write about in the library’s guestbook
22.Why did the library put the book in a corner instead of at the desk

During the holiday, some students are busy with travelling, camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to experience life outside school.
Twelve students sold vegetables at a local market in a big city together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan.
Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.
“Compared with travelling, such social practice makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin, 18, a senior high graduate (毕业生), to The City Morning Post. Dalin and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They worked hard to sell their vegetables. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o’clock. Some of them went to the farmers’ market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall (临时摊位). To lower the cost, they learned to bargain (讲价) with the sellers.
At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled (吆喝) loudly to attract customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.
For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. If the vegetables were too heavy, they would give customers an extra plastic bag.
After they finally packed up and went home, they had a short meeting. Everyone took notes and shared their feelings.
“We are tired but happy,” said Dalin, “because we gain a lot.”

Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays” This activity is for children to go to a lonely place to do some exciting things. Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children to do the outdoor activities without their parents.
The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to the nature is good for children. Many children in cities spend much time watching TV and playing computer games. This activity gives them an important chance to change.
Is it a wonderful idea Of course it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to learn to live on their own without adults staying with them. Chinese parents usually care too much about their children. They like to see their children being busy with activities which are controlled by them. But this will cause many problems. Children won’t be able to know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children may not be comfortable when they need to deal with problems alone. Even a little problem like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
Many people think the activity is good for children. Even years later, children will still remember what they have learned. Some may have learned to stay calm in dangerous situations. Some may have learned how to keep safe. Some may have learned how to work as a team. All these skills will help them a lot in the future.

Recently, community canteens (食堂) have become popular among Chinese people.
For only 20 yuan, we can buy our lunch at a community canteen in Hangzhou. We can have a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice—all very healthy. The dishes have a home-cooked taste.
Community canteens were made for the old people at first. It can be difficult for some old people to cook on their own, so the canteens offer help. They can have lunch and dinner within a 10-minute walk, or community workers can bring the dishes to them. There are experienced cooks in community canteens making special meals for the old. The food is soft and has less oil, and the old can eat healthily.
Now, the community canteens are bringing in more young people. For those who are not willing to order takeout meals or eat at restaurants, there are many kinds of healthier dishes in the community canteens. These dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. The price of the food is lower than that in the restaurants close by. Besides, community canteens also offer many other ways to meet the dining habits of young people.
Now you can see some creative ways to make things easier for people. For example, a community canteen in Beijing introduces buffet-style (自助模式) dishes. Therefore, the canteen has attracted more customers in and out of the neighbourhood.
There are now more than 6,700 community canteens in China. The rise of community canteens couldn’t happen without the work of local governments.

People have used leather (皮革) for a very long time. Long ago, early humans made clothes from leather. Today, we still use leather to make shoes, bags, belts, and even car seats. Leather comes from animal skin, usually cows.
But now, some people think we don’t need real leather anymore. 54 Some of these are made from plastic, which can hurt the Earth. Others are made from plants, like mushrooms, pineapples, and cacti. Some scientists can even grow leather in a lab using tiny cells from animals. Shall we stop using leather The following are the different viewpoints of two students.
Kathy: 55
Many people think it’s unacceptable to wear a fur coat, so why is it OK to wear a leather one It’s still made from an animal. Most of the leather we use is from cows, and cows give off gases that make the Earth hotter. Making leather also makes the air and water dirty. We don’t need to use leather anymore. 56 We can use these instead.
John: Leather is still a good choice.
Many people around the world eat meat, so it makes sense to use those animal skins for leather instead of letting them go to waste. 57 Fake leather (人造皮革) is often made from plastic, which does not break down and can make pollution worse. It also doesn’t last as long, so we may need to buy new things more often.
A.We should stop using leather. B.Raising cows can be bad for the environment. C. Leather is strong, lasts a long time, and breaks down naturally when we throw it away. D.They want to use other materials that look and feel like leather but are not from animals. E. There are plant-based leathers that look nice, cost less, and don’t hurt animals.

“It can’t be done.” Paul heard this over and over when he first suggested a way to clean up lots of plastic pollution in our oceans.
Paul was on a diving (潜水) trip in Greece three years ago when he was troubled by plastic. “There were more plastic bags than fishes,” he says. “That moment I realized it was a huge problem and the environmental problems are really the biggest problems we will face.”
That fall, Paul, at the age of 17, decided to study plastic pollution as part of a high school project. Soon, Paul learned that no one had yet thought of useful ways to clean up all the rubbish. Most people wanted to “fish” up the plastic using ships with nets—which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much, and leave sea life along with the rubbish.
Paul decided to avoid these problems: a solar-powered system (太阳能系统) using a moving plastic tube (管) which will go around the rubbish and collect it. Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to the land.
Paul organized a team of volunteers for the Ocean cleanup, which has about 100 members.
Over the next three to four years, Paul will continue to test whether his project is good enough or not.

How green are you Answer these questions and find out.
●Do you turn off the lights when you leave the room
●Do you buy new clothes just because they are modern
●Do you take your own bag when shopping and not ask for a plastic bag
●Do you buy drinks in bottles And what do you do with bottles when they are empty
We all need a healthy environment, but we produce much waste every day. It’s harmful to our Earth. To deal with it, let’s follow the 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce
Reduce means “use less”. Do not waste things you’ve already owned. You’d better eat up all the food you order and turn off the lights when you do not need them. What’s more, avoid buying unnecessary things when shopping.
Reuse
Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. Also, when we go shopping, it’s better to choose cloth bags instead of the plastic ones. These kinds of materials are environmentally-friendly.
Recycle
To recycle, we need to change. Although it takes energy to change, it is better than throwing things away or burning them. We throw tons of rubbish away each year, and it’s terrible. Instead, we should collect the waste. Divide it into plastic, glass, paper and rubber. Then, the machines break it down. Finally, the waste becomes something else that can be used again. To help recycle, we can develop a recycling policy (政策) for the whole community, and buy products such as recycled paper to help save trees.
We cannot hope for a rapid change, but let’s take these simple steps today so that we will save the world for our grandsons and granddaughters tomorrow.
世界环境日即将到来,学校将征集相关宣讲。请根据以上文章,写下你的介绍吧!

Seventy percent of our planet (行星) is covered by one huge, continuous body of seawater—the ocean (海洋). In 2008, the United Nations recognized June 8 as World Oceans Day. It’s a day to think about the important role that the oceans play in our lives, the dangers that are facing our oceans and the action we can take to protect them.
The importance of our oceans
The ocean is home to a number of animals on Earth. Marine (海洋的) plants provide us with 70% of the oxygen (氧气) we breathe. The ocean controls our climate (气候), providing heat in winter and cool air in summer. It also provides us with food and medicine. No matter where you live on the planet, your life needs depend on the ocean.
The problems facing our oceans
The most serious problem facing the ocean at the moment is plastic (塑料) pollution. Cutting the use of plastic bags and plastic bottles has been an important theme for World Oceans Day for a number of years. Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also huge problems. Rising sea temperatures have something to do with the weather pattern and the increase in extreme weather conditions.
How to celebrate the day
The day is celebrated in different ways, including special events at aquariums (水族馆) and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, art contests and film festivals. Such activities can remind people of the importance of the ocean.
67.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refer to
68.According to the passage, what problems do our oceans face
69.How do people celebrate World Oceans Day (List one example)
70.What action can you take to protect our oceans
Many people know LEGO (乐高). It is from Denmark, and appeared in 1932. The LEGO Group is working on a way to make LEGO bricks (积木) out of recycled plastic (可回收塑料).
In about 1960, people started to make LEGO bricks using a kind of plastic called ABS. With ABS plastic, the LEGO bricks won’t be broken easily. People can use them over and over again. Sadly, ABS plastic can’t be recycled and it takes a very long time to break down. It pollutes the environment. That’s a big problem. There is serious plastic pollution around the world.
To help save the earth, LEGO started to make new bricks in 2015. These bricks wouldn’t pollute the earth so much. Three years later, the factory started making some LEGO parts out of a kind of special plastic. The plastic is made from sugar cane (甘蔗).
LEGO is now trying to make bricks out of PET plastic. This kind of plastic can be found in things like bottles and clothing. People can make LEGO bricks out of recycled plastic bottles. Making bricks from used PET plastic can cut plastic pollution by about 70%. The factory is working to find out a way to add color to the bricks—right now they’re just white.
LEGO plans to make all of its main things out of environment-friendly materials (环保的材料) by the year 2030.

Many young people around the world are taking small actions to save the earth. Let’s go on a journey to meet some of them.
Young Litter Hero
Litter is a big problem around the world. It can end up in rivers and lakes where it pollutes the water. In the UK, two million pieces of rubbish are dropped every day. Harlee, 6, from the UK, is thought to be younger than any other litter-picker in his country. After Harlee noticed lots of rubbish near his local fast food restaurants, he decided to pick up waste in his spare time. His efforts are having an impact (巨大影响).
Young Plastic Hero
Plastic is used to make many things we use every day. When these things are thrown away, some of them end up in the ocean. The plastic does harm to animals and plants in the ocean. Tony, 13, from Canada, set up the Plastic Money Shop when he was six years old. People can trade their single-use plastic for free rice, school things or a young tree in the shop. The unwanted rubbish is turned into school chairs and roof (屋顶) materials for houses. “The goal of my project is to take every single-use plastic away from our planet,” explains Tony.
Young Tree Hero
Trees are necessary for our planet. They clean the air, provide a home for wildlife and keep our drinking water safe. But in 2022, planet Earth lost 66,000 square kilometres of forest worldwide. Ellyanne, 14, from Kenya (肯尼亚), decided to change that. She began planting trees when she was four years old. In 2017, she started an activity called Children With Nature to show other kids how they can make a difference in their own area. So far, she has planted more than 250,000 trees around the world. “No matter how old or young you are, you can start making a difference,” says Ellyanne.
A lot of work is still needed to protect the earth. If more of us can be like these young people, it will certainly make life better for everyone.

No Car Day was first started by 34 cities in France on September 22, 1998. It was started to protect the environment. By now, more than 1,000 cities around the world have had a No Car Day.
The first No Car Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. Other cities, including Taipei, Shanghai and Wuhan also support the day.
In Beijing, more and more people are joining in the activity. It asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike to work. It also calls on (号召) Beijingers not to use cars on June 5 (World Environment Day). The slogan (口号) for the day is, “If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day.”
So far, more than 200,000 drivers have shown their support. “We can’t control the weather, but we can choose not to drive,” said Wu Zonghua, a car club chairman. Beijing is trying to have 238 blue sky days this year. In the first quarter of 2012, Beijing only had 52 blue sky days. This was 11 days less than the number for the same period last year. Much of the dust comes from the desert, but cars cause most of the air pollution. We must do more for No Car Day.

Answer the questions. (根据短文内容回答问题)
Do you know where your food comes from How far do the milk, apples, coffee beans and other items you eat travel to reach you What we eat shapes us. But the decisions we make on what we eat can also shape the world around us.
Starting to check your food miles is an important step to saving the Earth. Food miles refer to the distance your food travels before it reaches you. From farm to fork, the shorter the distance, the better the food will be for your health and the environment.
Food miles are a rather modern idea. Throughout most of human history, people have eaten food grown locally. But over the past few decades (十年), the world has become highly connected. We have become used to having a wide range of global foods. We buy tropical fruits rather than those grown in our local climate. We expect fresh, green products (尤指农产品) even when there is snow on the ground.
When we calculate food miles, we shouldn’t just think about the exact number of miles. It depends on many factors (因素), such as how damaging these miles can be. For one thing, the mode of transportation is important. Air travel, for example, allows food to travel quickly. However, this speedy delivery system causes a carbon footprint about 50 times bigger than that of the much slower transportation of food by sea.
Working out the environmental cost of what we eat can be hard. The simple truth is that most of us can do far better than what we do now. Whenever you can, buy food from local farmers and eat in-season fruits and vegetables.
98.People have been talking about food miles for the past few centuries, haven’t they
99.According to the author, what are food miles
100.What examples did the author use to show people’s habit of buying global food (Give 1 example.)
