Rick decided to attend Ohio University in the late 1970s after his dad learned about the strong reputation (声誉) of the school's communication programs from a friend in Columbus.
Rick and his dad came to Athens for a college visit and met with Archie Greer. Greer was the former station manager at WOUB Public Media and was a professor at Ohio University. He took Rick on a tour of the campus, which included a visit to the WOUB studios in the Radio and TV Building.

Rick started working at WOUB and got experience on the radio. “That experience set a course for what happened when I got out of school. What you learn in the classroom is really important, but the reality is that connecting that with the practical experience in real time is a game changer,” said Rick.
Later, Rick was given an internship (实习期) at Blair Television. At the end of the internship, he received an offer to work in Blair's training program, where he started his impressive career (职业). Through his career, Rick held senior level media leadership roles.
“WOUB shaped my career because it gave me a chance to find out what I really loved. It gave me a wide range of experience that I can still call upon today,” said Rick. “When I was getting into the industry, that hands-on experience I got at WOUB meant I had knowledge.”

Years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience (服从), while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric (结构) of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong wish that parents have for their children is another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.

C. ask their parents for the best advice
D. have very little in common with their parents
10. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Parents should be strict with their children.
B. The generation gap is partly caused by the older generation.
C. Parents couldn’t do things well themselves.
D. The young never want to satisfy their parents.
11. Which of the following also causes the generation gap

B. The young value the old too much for their wisdom.
C. Young people don’t have the knowledge of a lifetime.

“The weather station in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reported a temperature of 54. 4℃ on 16 August,” said Clare Nullis, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokesperson. “If verified (证实), it would be the highest temperature on Earth since 1931, and the third- hottest temperature ever recorded on the planet. ”
Speaking in Geneva, Ms. Nullis told reporters that WMO had tasked a group of international experts to check the reading by examining the observation (观测), the equipment used, and how it compared to data collected at nearby stations.
According to WMO's data, the hottest temperature ever recorded was in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reaching 56. 7℃ on 10 July 1913. The next highest temperature was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, reaching 55℃. Other high temperature records include54℃ in Mitribah, Kuwait on 21 July 2016.
The findings show that the equipment at Furnace Creek meteorological station was in proper working condition at the time of Sunday's observation, Ms. Nullis noted. “Although the full verification process will likely take many months, ” Ms. Nullis said, “ all the markers so far show that this is a fair and acceptable observation. ”
The very hot conditions have come along with a heatwave on the US west coast. The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued (发布) numerous heat warnings explaining that the high temperatures will continue this week. The NWS in Las Vegas, which covers the Death Valley area, said online, “We are faced with a long- lasting heat event. Another run at 54. 4℃- plus temperatures in Death Valley remains possible.”
The development follows repeated warnings from WMO about high temperatures which are having a bad influence, causing wildfires in places such as forests and grasslands.

14. What can we infer about the Death Valley area from the last two paragraphs
A. It will probably see hotter weather. B. It was badly hit by deadly wildfires.
C. It will face temperature drops this week. D. It was well- known for its good grasslands.

Two fast friends were Willie Brown and his little dog Bounce. Willie could never think of taking a walk without Bounce. Cake and play were equally shared between them. Willie taught his dog many running tricks and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk. There came a time, however, when Bounce really told Willie’s father something, though he could not talk. Let me tell you how he did this.
It was on a bright summer afternoon. Willie had strolled with Bounce down to the river, which was not more than two blocks from his father’s store. Willie began to throw stones into the water, and to watch the ripples as they made one circle after another. Bounce lay on the grass, watching the flies that buzzed around his nose, and catching any that came too near. There were some logs floating in the river near the store. Willie jumped upon one of them, to see if he could throw a stone across the river.
He drew back, and sent the stone with all his might. Just as it left his hand, the log turned, and he fell into the water. He was very much frightened, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one to hear, though he called as loud as he could for help.
Poor little Bounce gave a great yelp of distress. If he had been a big water dog, he could have jumped in and brought his master out. He ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking, looking first at Willie and then around.
Suddenly he started running, as fast as he could.

Family Matters
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Family Matters
I think family is a place where we are loved the most and act the worst. Despite hardship striking us, family is always a warm harbor.
I remember the quarrel with my mother about using the mobile phone. After that, I have been thinking about how to deal with those conflicts. The reason for her anger was that she was afraid staring at the screen for a long time would harm my health. Now we agree on how much time I use the phone.
So I figure in family, it is not the problems but how to settle them that matters.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Suddenly he started running, as fast as he could. He ran up the street to the store and caught hold of Mr. Brown’s clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping. Noticing the dog’s abnormal behavior, Mr. Brown realized something must have been wrong. He put on his hat and went with the dog. Finally, the father came to the river. He saw Willie’s hat floating on the water. Without thinking twice, he sprang in and caught him, and quickly carried him to the bank. When he got over his fright, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friends.
