Live with roommates Have friends and family around you Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: Lead by action.
4. What do the underlined words “jump on that bandwagon” mean in the first paragraph
A. Share an apartment with you. B. Join you in what you’re doing.
C. Transform your way of living. D. Help you to make the decision.
5. What was the attitude of the author’s father toward buying groceries with jars
A. He disapproved of it. B. He was favorable to it.
C. He was tolerant of it. D. He didn’t care about it.
6. What can we infer about the author
A She is quite good at cooking. B. She respects others’ privacy.
C. She enjoys being a housewife. D. She is a determined person.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. How to get on well with other family members.
B. How to have one’s own personal space at home.
C. How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household.
D. How to control the budget when buying groceries.

Port Lympne Reserve, which runs a breeding (繁育) programme, has welcomed the arrival of a rare black rhino calf (犀牛幼崽). When the tiny creature arrived on January 31, she became the 40th black rhino to be born at the reserve. And officials at Port Lympne were delighted with the new arrival, especially as black rhinos are known for being difficult to breed in captivity (圈养).
Paul Beer, head of rhino section at Port Lympne, said: “Obviously we’re all absolutely delighted to welcome another calf to our black rhino family. She’s healthy, strong and already eager to play and explore. Her mother, Solio, is a first-time mum and she is doing a fantastic job. It’s still a little too cold for them to go out into the open, but as soon as the weather warms up, I have no doubt that the little one will be out and about exploring and playing every day.”
The adorable female calf is the second black rhino born this year at the reserve, but it is too early to tell if the calves will make good candidates to be returned to protected areas of the wild. The first rhino to be born at Port Lympne arrived on January 5 to first-time mother Kisima and weighed about 32kg. His mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all born at the reserve and still live there.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, the global black rhino population has dropped as low as 5500, giving the rhinos a “critically endangered” status.
8. Which of the following best describes the breeding programme
A. Costly. B. Controversial. C. Ambitious. D. Successful.
9. What does Paul Beer say about the new-born rhino
A. She loves staying with her mother. B. She dislikes outdoor activities.
C. She is in good condition D. She is sensitive to heat.
10. What similar experience do Solio and Kisima have
A. They had their first born in January. B. They enjoyed exploring new places
C. They lived with their grandmothers. D. They were brought to the reserve young
11. What can be inferred about Porn Lympne Reserve
A. The rhino section will be open to the public.
B. It aims to control the number of the animals.
C. It will continue to work with the World Wildlife Fund.
D. Some of its rhinos may be sent to the protected wild areas.

The “marshmallow (棉花糖) test” is a famous psychology experiment that has been repeated many times with children. In the original version a child is placed in a room alone with a marshmallow on a table in front of them. The experimenter tells the child that they can either eat the marshmallow immediately or wait for a short period of time (usually 15 minutes) and receive a second marshmallow as a reward. Some kids eat the marshmallow immediately, but most try their best to wait for the experimenter to come back with two marshmallows. The results of the original test showed that children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow tended to have better life outcomes later in life, such as higher academic achievement, better social skills, and lower rates of obesity and drug use.
Recently, a new version of the marshmallow test has been conducted with adults. In this experiment, adults were given a choice between receiving a small amount of money immediately or waiting for a larger amount of money after a certain period of time. The results of this adult version of the test were quite different from the original children’s version. While some adults were able to wait for the larger reward, many others were not. In fact, the researchers found that adults who were more impulsive (冲动的) in the marshmallow-like experiment were more likely to have financial problems, such as being in debt or having difficulty saving money.
The researchers also found that there were some factors that influenced an adult’s ability to delay gratification (延迟满足). One factor was the person’s level of self-control. Adults with higher levels of self-control were more likely to be able to wait for the larger reward. Another factor was the person’s perception of time. Adults who perceived time as passing more slowly were more likely to be impatient and less likely to wait for the larger reward. Additionally, the researchers found that the context in which the experiment was conducted also played a role. For example, adults were more likely to be impulsive when they were in a hurry or under stress.
12. What do we know about the original “marshmallow test”
A. It was conducted many times with adults.
B. It aimed to test children’s social skills.
C. It showed that children with self-control had better life outcomes.
D. It was repeated to prove the reliability of the results.
13. What did the new version of the marshmallow test with adults find
A. Most adults could wait for the larger reward.
B. Impulsive adults were more likely to have financial problems.
C. Adults were more patient than children in the test.
D. The results were similar to those of the original test.
14. What factors influenced an adult’s ability to delay gratification
A. Self-control, perception of time and context.
B. Self-control, level of education and context.
C. Age, perception of time and financial situation.
D. Age, level of education and financial situation.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The “Marshmallow Test” — A Famous Psychology Experiment
B. Children’s Self-control and Life Outcomes
C. Adults’ Impulsivity and Financial Problems
D. The “Marshmallow Test” for Adults — New Findings

One evening, as she was heading back to her home from a park, Ms. Eleanor suddenly realized that her purse was missing. She retraced her steps, searching every corner of the park. Her heart sank with each passing moment, as the purse contained a treasured photograph of her departed husband, which she carried as a precious treasure.
As the sun set casting long shadows along the pavements, Ms. Eleanor felt an overwhelming sense of loss and hopelessness. In the meantime, a young man named Tom was walking home from her cherished job at the community library. As he passed by the bookshop which Ms. Eleanor had visited earlier that day, he spotted something nestled in the corner of the pavement. Interested, he picked it up and discovered it to be a well-worn leather purse. Tom opened the purse, seeking some identification to return it to its owner. It wasn’t long before he saw the cash and personal belongings inside. Recognizing the significance of what he held, he decided to wait at the spot where he found the purse, hoping that the owner would return to search for it.
As nightfall blanketed the city, Ms. Eleanor, with a heavy heart, headed back to her beloved bookshop to make her last attempt to get back her purse. Her pace was slow and weary, yet her determination was strong. As she drew near to the bookshop, she noticed a figure standing under a street lamp, hold something in his hands.
“Pardon me, young person. I was wondering if you happened to come across an old purse ” Ms. Eleanor inquired in a low tone The young man’s face brightened and he was about to hand the purse to the elderly lady.

Sensing the young man’s worry, Ms. Eleanor decided to confirm her ownership. She described the contents of the purse, mentioning the photograph of her late husband whom she cherished deeply. “It’s a small black and white picture, slightly worn at the edges, but it’s the most important thing.” she explained. Tom, moved by her words and the evident sorrow, handed the purse to the elderly woman. The lady was full of gratitude and asked him to accept the money in her purse for his good deed.
Tom said, “It’s my pleasure. Forget about the money.” As the whole incident progressed, a sense of relief and enlightenment enveloped him. Tom added, “It’s I who should be grateful. Your heartfelt thanks is more precious than any money. You’ve also taught me to value my beloved ones. Nice to know you, Ms. Eleanor.” With those words, Tom prepared to depart, his heart filled with a sense of accomplishment. Ms. Eleanor stood there, a satisfied smile emerging on her face as she viewed Tom’s departure, both having gained a sense of joy from their brief but meaningful interaction.
