Lynda La Plante is the writer of Prime Suspect and the best-selling author of more than 40 books. Her new novel Hidden Killers is out now. She is talking about three books that deeply affected her.
Wuthering Heights
By Emily Bronte
One night as a child, I walked quietly into the bathroom when I heard a voice calling, “Let me in; let me in!” along with a terrible knock on a window coming from my grandma’s room. Quite afraid, I cried, “Help me! Where’s the ghost ” Grandma looked up and said, “Don’t be silly; I’m listening to a story on the radio called Wuthering Heights.” I joined my grandma and realized then how you could take a story from a book and change it to a different medium(媒介).
The Water-Babies
By Charles Kingsley
This classic Victorian story caught my imagination as a child. It made me consider the unfairness of life — why is one child sleeping in comfort and another forced to climb through a chimney(烟囱) I especially loved all the questions Tom asks on his adventures, many of which are about social unfairness. All my life I’ve asked questions too.
The Faerie Queene
By Edmund Spenser
I used to have problems reading — I was told I had “word blindness”. My mother gave me a copy of Spenser’s poem and said, “If you can learn some of this then you’ll be able to read anything.” I rose to the challenge. I learned it off by heart and was so proud of myself for keeping something that difficult in mind. Then I learned that I could learn words just as well as anyone.

A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter Lisa failed a test. The grade might stop her from qualifying for the next class she wants to take. There were tears and some complaints for a few minutes. Then I saw something interesting. She made a joke, expressed gratitude that she didn’t have bigger problems, and finally made a plan on how to make improvements.
She was never the same as she was one year ago. That one was unwilling to take responsibility. That one stayed in anger and blamed others. We expect our kids to learn and grow. We hope for it. However, most of us grow through adversity (逆境), even trauma (精神创伤). It happened to Lisa last year repeatedly. She searched for ways to get her bearings and equip herself when everything around her was changing by the day. Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth.
Trauma refers to an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings. The growth after trauma doesn’t mean we get through challenges uninjured. It’s been a scary and painful time, for everyone, in one way or another. We may experience disbelief, depression, and even denial. As time moves on, people who have experienced trauma may have headaches or other physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and even relationship problems. Trauma does leave its irremovable marks.
However, in one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial difficulty during the pandemic. 88 percent of the people surveyed say they also have experienced some positive outcomes—They now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation of life.
24. What is Lisa like now when she fails
A. She tries to cover it.
B. She is positive and adult.
C. She acts unconcerned.
D. She wants to make excuses.
25. What does the author intend to tell us through Lisa’s experience
A. There is no sweet without sweat.
B. Experience is the father of wisdom.
C. Difficult situations are likely to make one stronger.
D. Responsibility is often more important than ability.
26. How does the author prove his view
A. By analyzing existing data.
B. By quoting a psychologist.
C. By contrasting a person’s constant changes.
D. By giving examples together with study results.
27. Which of the following may the author agree with about post-traumatic growth
A. It usually comes at a high price.
B. It produces little negative feelings.
C. It is one of the fastest ways to make improvements.
D. It is growth that does both good and harm.

Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive(冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.
A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’. “No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it. Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they’re mad-at me,” he added. Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.
“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,” one woman said. One Reddit user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I’ve read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray...all the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”
Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree” or “I understood and will follow.”
Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2, 000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.
28. Which of the following point is not the Gen Z’s understanding of the emoji thumbs-up
A. Being rude. B. Being agreeable.
C. Being hurtful. D. Being unfriendly.
29. What does the underlined word “hostile” mean in paragraph 3
A. Unfriendly and aggressive. B. Tough and difficult.
C. Unwanted and unacceptable. D. Strange and unusual.
30. Why can’t older workers understand the young’s reaction to the thumbs-up emoji
A. Because of their poor communications kill.
B. Because of their being old with worse memory.
C. Because of their less communicating with the young.
D. Because of their different understanding of the emoji.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Rejected by the younger generation
B. The Thumbs-up Emoji: Highly Welcomed by Old People
C. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap
D. The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Being Aggressive

When you praise a dog, it’s listening to not just the words you say but also how you say them. That might not be huge news to dog owners. But now researchers have explored this phenomenon by using an imaging machine to look inside the brains of 13 dogs as they listened to their owners’ voice.
The reward pathway in the dogs’ brains lit up when they heard both praising words and an approving intonation (语调)—but not when they heard random (随机的) words spoken in a praising tone or praising words spoken in a flat tone, according to the researchers.
“Dogs deal with both what we say and how we say it in a way which is amazingly similar to how humans do it,” says Attila Andics, a neuroscientist in Hungary. When dogs hear speech, he explains, they seem to separate the meaning of words from the intonation. Then the left hemisphere (半球) of the brain deals with meaning, while intonation is dealt with in the right hemisphere.
All the dogs in the study were willing volunteers and were trained not to move in the scanner (扫描器). The dogs could get up and leave the machine whenever they wanted. But it was clear to the dogs that their human companions loved it when they did this very easy task. “They were really happy to take part,” says Andics. “The difficulty of the training was that they can’t move more than 3 millimeters in any direction, otherwise we will have to throw out all of the data.”
He says most dog owners have experimented with trying to “trick” their dogs by saying nonsense words in a cheerful, happy tone of voice. “I think the big difference here is that they only heard us, and they didn’t see us,” says Andics, because the dogs were inside the machine. “Here, the only information they had was the speech signal. What we saw is that for praise to be dealt with as a reward, when there is no other supporting information, both word meaning and intonation have to fit.”
32. What is regarded as a reward by dogs according to the study
A. Praising words in a flat tone. B. Random words in a flat tone.
C. Praising words in a praising tone. D. Random words in a praising tone.
33. How do dogs deal with what they hear
A. Focus more on the meaning. B. Focus more on the intonation.
C. Use information from their peers. D. Use the two parts of the brain.
34. What is a hard part of the training in Andics’opinion
A. Looking into the dogs’ brain activity.
B. Training dogs to stay still in the machine.
C. Keeping dogs separated from their owners.
D. Asking dogs to get up and leave the scanner.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Dogs Understand Tone and Meaning of Words
B. Dogs Indeed Know How to Praise
C. Dogs Can Recognize Owners’ Voices
D. Dogs Can Read Man’s Moods

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

【原文】M: Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821. When the Civil War began in 1861, she heard of stories of wounded soldiers. She felt she needed to do something to help them, so she urged people to donate bandages and medicine and delivered these supplies to the battlefield. Clara didn’t stop helping when the war was over. She led a group to search for missing soldiers. This group also worked to identify soldiers killed or missing. After four years of this work, Clara moved to Switzerland, where she first learned about a group called the Red Cross. This group worked to help people who were suffering during times of war. In 1873 Clara returned to the United States. In 1881 she started an American branch of the Red Cross. She served as its first President for over 20 years. As the result of Clara’s hard work and leadership, the Red Cross grew. Today, it also helps people suffering as a result of earthquakes, fires, floods, and other disasters. Clara Barton died on April 12, 1912, but her great contribution, the American Red Cross lives on.

【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. C

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1: I knew I should do something.__________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2: My grandfather was surprised by my behavior._____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I knew I should do something. I went to my piggy bank and was about to break it and take out the money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. Thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the coins rolled all over the floor. “Yes, those children need help and need the money more.” I said to myself.
My grandfather was surprised by my behavior. When he realized what had happened, he touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you. ” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now. ” “Thank you, Grandpa.” I was overwhelmed with happiness.
