The first Smokey Bear poster shows a brown-coated bear wearing jeans. He is looking shyly up from under a hat as he pours a bucket of water over a campfire. “SMOKEY SAYS,” the poster reads, “Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires.”
Albert Staehle, the painter, might have chosen a bear because he wanted Smokey to look kingly, like the father of the forest, as his wife later recalled. But many will forever associate the cartoon with a real bear, whose paws (爪子) and belly were burnt in a 1950 spring wildfire.
In a biography (传记) —“Smokey Bear: The Cub Who Left His Pawprints on History” — the “real” Smokey is getting proper respect. The book’s author, Karen Signell, first met Smokey when he was a cub (幼崽), living at the National Zoo in Washington. The cub had been rescued by Ray Bell, an official in charge of wildlife, fighting a fire in New Mexico’s Capitan Mountains. Don Bell was 15 when his father came home with the five-pound bear. The Sun-Sentinel’s Brittany Shammas reports:
“The Bell family was constantly taking in wild animals, so Don Bell didn’t think much of the ‘cute little guy’. But the story of the rescued cub would become a national phenomenon. Smokey’s arrival at the capital airport drew hundreds of reporters, photographers and onlookers, and he appeared in newspapers across the country.”
Signell visited the cub not long after he reached the zoo, and she writes Smokey’s story from his stand. Don Bell told the Sun-Sentinel he feared it might be “artificial” but that “after she finished it up, I read it and I think it is an eye-opener.”
24. What do we know about the first Smokey Bear poster
A. Bears play a vital role in the forest. B. Prevention of forest fires can be done.
C. Attention should be paid to the wildlife. D. Education matters in nature reservation.
25. Why did Albert Staehle choose a bear
A. He knew it was burnt in a wildfire. B. He worried about Smokey’s condition.
C. He thought it looked kind of awesome. D. He wanted to make it king of the forest.
26. Which words can best describe the Bell family
A. Kind-hearted and helpful. B. Determined and professional.
C. Considerate and well-educated. D. Enthusiastic and open-minded.
27. What can we infer from the text
A. Smokey rose to fame when the cartoon came out.
B. Staehle got his inspiration from the burned bear.
C. Don Bell wasn’t satisfied with what Signell wrote.
D. Smokey became famous nationwide due to media.
C
Think there’s nothing more healthy than a bag of popcorn and a classic children’s animated film (动画片) Think again, say Canadian researchers. Researchers did their research by watching 135 popular North American films from 1937 to today. The films included 45 children’s animated movies and 90 dramatic films for adults. “Rather than being the healthy form of entertainment, they are full of on-screen death and murder.”
Researchers found that the parents of heroes or heroines died most often in children’s films. They were five times more likely to be killed than they were in films for adults. “There was no evidence that these results had changed over time since Snow White in 1937, when Snow White’s stepmother, the evil queen, was struck by lightning, forced off a cliff (悬崖), and crushed by a big rock,” the authors wrote.
Sometimes the death happens at the very beginning of the film. About four minutes and three seconds into Finding Nemo, Nemo’s mother gets eaten by a barracuda fish. In Tarzan, the main character’s parents are killed by a leopard four minutes and eight seconds into the movie. The researchers found that two-thirds of the cartoons showed the death of an important character, compared with half of the adult dramas. Researchers watched deadly animal attacks in five films (A Bug’s Life, The Croods, How to Train Your Dragon, Finding Nemo and Tarzan); shootings in three films (Bambi, Peter Pan and Pocahontas); and deadly stabbings (刺伤) in two films (Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid).
“On-screen death and violence can be frightening to young children and can have strong and long-lasting effects. This might be a problem when children haven’t been prepared.”
28. What did the research find
A. On-screen violence in kids’ films. B. Dramatic plots in animated films.
C. Adults’ favorite cartoon movies. D. Children’s favorites in the cinema.
29. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Heroes and heroines. B. Parents of main characters.
C. Deaths in films for adults. D. Children’s animated films.
30. What message does the author want to convey by mentioning many films
A. Deadly animal attacks are the theme. B. Animated films are favored by adults.
C. Various violence can occur now and then. D. Wildlife is the main role in animated films.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Problems Explained to Kids B. Dramatic Films for Children
C. Weaknesses in animated Films D. Harmful Acts in Kids’ Films
D
“Anxiety.” The very word invites discomfort. Its effects — shortness of breath, pounding heart, muscle tension — are outright upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend to miss out on many valuable opportunities presented by this human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is not deadly, nor is it a disease. Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us.
We all know working out at the gym is hard. By nature, a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do. The sweet spot of exercise is always a somewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension. For example, one effective treatment for fear is exposure therapy, which involves gradually encountering things that make one anxious, reducing fear over time.
Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., “I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support”), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love.
From time to time, we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up, our resources break down, and we feel uncomfortable and anxious — what we’re experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales going out of balance. Focusing on work and pretending everything is OK only leads to disastrous results. Medical treatment for stress may function for a while, but it tends to make things worse in the long run. The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales.
32. What does the author say about anxiety
A. It is an invitation to diseases. B. It indicates stable mental health.
C. It is a natural emotional expression. D. It costs us many valuable chances.
33. Why is “good workout” mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To prove how exercise influences emotions.
B. To explain how anxiety builds emotional strength.
C. To show a positive connection between mind and body.
D. To suggest an effective way to challenge physical limits.
34. According to Paragraph 3, how can we improve relationships
A. By sharing anxieties. B. By expressing needs. C. By helping each other. D. By keeping in touch.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Devoting more energy to work will pay off.
B. Taking medicine can do the trick permanently.
C. Increasing resources available can handle pressure.
D. Mastering advanced mathematical skills is necessary.

On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new deskmate. Sara’s distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.”
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at Sara’s hair has deeply hurt her.”
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31.

Water security under threat
Every minute, over 1 million water bottles are sold worldwide, and the industry keeps growing, according to a report published in 2023. Global sales of bottled water are expected to nearly double by 2030. ____36____, according to a report by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, which looks into the worldwide effects of the industry.
The industry’s emphasis on marketing bottled water as a “luxury” item can draw focus away from the real problem of public water systems that poor regions face, which can further worsen global inequalities when it comes to water access.
For example, public officials often present bottled water as a stopgap (权宜之计) when tap water is contaminated or pipes are damaged. Yet in practice, bottled water often ends up replacing unreliable tap water for a long time. ____37____.
According to the report, the bottled water industry produced around 600 billion plastic bottles in 2021, resulting in an estimated 25 million tons of plastic waste. ____38____.
Each bottle can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, leaking dangerous and harmful chemicals during the process. ____39____. This contributes to a significant build-up of plastic waste that presents a severe danger to marine life. ____40____. It is declining rapidly in certain regions of the world due to factors such as excessive extraction (开采) and droughts worsened by climate change. However, the amount of water used by the bottled water industry can further strain an already decreasing water supply.
“Bottled water will satisfy the thirst, but it will not provide a sustainable solution.” Vladimir Smakhtin, coauthor of the report, told CNN.
A. Additionally, they find their way into the ocean
B. The main source of bottled water is groundwater
C. And the increasing trend of sales is going to continue
D. This leads to neglecting rebuilding public water systems
E. But this global success comes at a big social and environmental cost
F. Most of the plastic waste isn’t recycled and ultimately ends up in landfills
G. Many people worry the effects of groundwater extraction may worsen in a warmer future

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m delighted to share a labor experience themed “Labour is the Most Honorable”, which aimed to foster a love for labor and raise our awareness of environmental protection.
On arriving at the worksite we were split into groups and engaged in a variety of activities. Some planted trees, while some sowed flowers, and the rest did cleaning around the campus. All of us sweated blood to do our job. With our efforts, the campus took on a new look and became more vibrant. Thinking of the shade of the trees and the beauty of the flowers in the future, we felt a great sense of achievement.
I found the experience extremely rewarding, as it deepened my understanding of the value of labor and the significance of a green environment. Looking forward to your sharing of your experience.
Yours,
Li Hua

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】On Monday morning, Mike unwillingly approached the classroom. Feeling nervous and embarrassed, his heart was heavy with worry that his classmates would tease him. His hair had been cut so short that the skin under the hair was nearly visible. As he stepped through the door, the room erupted in giggles, nicknaming him “Baldy.” A few curious boys came up and attempted to touch his newly shaved head. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, Mike shouted out, “You are mean!” Tears welled up in his eyes as Mike stood up and ran towards the door.
At that moment, Mr. Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. With a gentle pat on Mike’s shoulder, he guided him back to his seat. As Mr. Stone made his way to the platform, the room fell silent. Holding up the crumpled ball of paper, he began to smooth out its wrinkles. “Each fold represented a scar of hurtful words. Even when we try to apologize,” Mr. Stone explained softly, “the wounds remain. Let us always speak with kindness and warmth.” From that day on, Mike learned a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and empathy.
