Disabled scientists often face difficulties while carrying out their work. So some scientists with disabilities are trying to bring the issue into the public eye and come up with workable solutions. Anita Marshall is a geologist from the University of Florida. As a doctoral student, Marshall went on field trips with other students. But she often had to wait in the car because the organizers had not thought about her disabilities.
However, Marshall says while she faces some limitations, it does not mean she cannot do her job. She recently led an outing of disabled scientists to a natural l lake in Southern California’s San Bernardino National Forest. The group included scientists and students with disabilities related to sight, hearing, and mobility. They visited Lost Lake, which sits along the area’s San Andreas Fault. The trip was organized by Marshall’s group, called the International Association for Geoscience Diversity. It aims to reveal t the difficulties 0challenges that disabled scientists often face. One problem is that many scientists seem to value a single, traditional way of doing their work. This makes it more difficult to get changes for disabled scientists.
On the trip to Lost Lake, everyone got to see the lake even if they could not get there physically. Some attendees saw the surroundings on video taken by a drone (无人机).An important part of the process was for scientists to think about what might help other scientists they worked with.
The National Science Foundation says that disabled people make up about three percent of the science, technology, engineering, and math workforce. The low percentage is partly because labs, classrooms, and field areas are not designed for disabled individuals. Some disabled students and faculty are still told that they cannot work in a lab or do research safely. Scientists with disabilities are priceless because of their life experiences. They have to come up with creative ways to get past challenges in their lives—a problem-solving skill that is needed in a lab.
24. What does the underlined word “issue” in the first paragraph refer to
A. The trip organizers’ incapability.
B. A lack of research funds of field trips.
C. A variety of scientific workable solutions.
D. The disabled scientists’ difficulties at work.
25. What is Marshall’s main purpose in organizing the trip
A. To show the disabled scientists’ teamwork.
B. To show the barriers disabled scientists meet.
C. To show the students’ courage to overcome difficulties.
D. To show the interaction between scientists and students.
26. What is the author’s attitude to disabled scientists
A. Supportive. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Disabled Scientists: Organizing Field Trips Actively
B. Disabled Scientists: Enhancing Problem-solving Skills
C. Disabled Scientists: Trying to Get to the Lake Physically
D. Disabled Scientists: Seeking Changes to Improve Their Work
C
We have all heard that reducing meat and dairy consumption is an important behavioral change that can help with our planet’s climate. However, what is a successful strategy to get people to consume more plant-based food
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) has an answer. It pioneered a vegetarian or vegan option to reduce climate change. It is one of 60 hospitals, universities, major corporations, and cities that have signed an international pledge (承诺) to reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030.
One of the main ways BWFH is using is not mentioning the word “vegetarian”(or “vegan”. Vegetarian food does not contain any meat or fish, and vegan food does not contain meat or any animal products such as milk, butter, or cheese. The hospital adopted some strategies like focusing on the benefits of the ingredients in the dish and not mentioning “vegetarian” or “vegan” in the name of any dishes on the hospital cafeteria menu. Another strategy that has been experimented with is the order of foods. For example, putting vegetarian and vegan foods before their meat counterparts urges the patients to take plant-based foods first. Through research, the hospital has found that vegetarian and vegan labeled foods tend to categorize foods and attract only a certain group of the hospital’s patients. Vegetarian and vegan foods have been left out of the diets of people who don’t have any dietary restrictions.
Although food is only a small percentage of hospital carbon emissions, reducing meat in cafeteria food will reduce the carbon emissions significantly. Additionally, vegetarian and vegan diets will help diversify people’s diets, increasing their intake of healthful fiber, vitamins, and other micronutrients. Adding fish to their menus in the future is another good option since it can be sustainably fished. Since starting the pledge, BWFH has seen a surprising 2. 2% decrease in total emissions per calorie. This result of these measures matches a similar study from MIT and can change how we think of plant-based foods.
28. Why does the author ask a question in the first paragraph
A. To summarize the text. B. To present a controversial issue.
C. To introduce the topic of discussion. D. To raise doubts about the following data.
29. What do we know about BWFH
A. It favours meat products. B. It pledges to reduce consumption.
C. It takes advantage of greenhouse gas. D. It shows concern for the environment.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly say about BWFH
A. Its plans to increase food orders.
B. The richness of its cafeteria menu.
C. Its strategies to promote plant-based meals.
D. The disadvantages of its dietary restrictions.
31. Which word best describes the effect of BWFH’s measures
A. Remarkable. B. Temporary. C. Limited. D. One-sided.
D
Scientists say newly examined data from a Chinese explorer on Mars adds to existing evidence that the planet once had a large ocean.
The exploring vehicle, or rover, is called Zhurong. It disembarked on the Martian surface in 2021. The rover has been operating in an area known as Utopia Planitia, which is a large plain on Mars’ northern hemisphere.
The researchers combined data from Zhurong’s instruments with observations from satellites and spacecraft orbiting Mars. The team said the examinations appeared to show that Utopia Planitia had geological elements suggesting an ocean coastline. The scientists said multiple elements, or features, pointed to evidence that a large ocean existed on Mars billions of years ago. The discovered surface features included troughs (槽) and channels that may have been formed by flowing water on Mars.
Earlier research that examined data of similar surface features suggested they might have been created by mud volcanoes, which likely formed in areas where there had been water or ice. The researchers said the evidence showed the area likely contained deep ocean environments as well as shallow ones. Bo Wu was the lead author of the study. Wu is a planetary scientist in Hong Kong. He said, “We estimate the flooding of the Utopia Planitia on Mars was about 3.6881billion n years ago. The ocean surface was likely frozen in a geologically short period.”
The search for water on Mars is closely linked to the search for signs of possible life. Evidence of a past ocean raises the possibility that the planet may have once supported life. There have been past studies suggesting Mars once had a large northern ocean. One such study was released in 2022. That research was based on satellite images of the Martian surface. The images were combined to produce detailed maps of the planet’s northern hemisphere. Examination of the maps led to evidence of coastlines that once sat at the edge of a large ocean.
Another study, released in August, presented evidence suggesting Mars may contain a large ocean deep beneath its surface. That evidence was based on NASA’s InSight Lander.
32. What does the underlined word “disembarked” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Landed. B. Depended. C. Broke. D. Disappeared.
33. What did the researchers find from the data from Zhurong
A. The structure of Mars. B. The birth time of Mars.
C. A large block of ice on Mars. D. Signs of an ancient ocean on Mars.
34. What did the earlier research discover from volcanoes on Mars
A. Its mild environment. B. The existence of water.
C. Its similarity to the Earth. D. The disappearance of life.
35. How did the 2022 study investigate Mars
A. By using data from the Zhurong rover.
B. By analyzing satellite images to create maps.
C. By examining the planet’s southern hemisphere.
D. By getting information from NASA’s InSight Lander.

In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly complicated, making it hard to tell AI-generated images from real ones created by humans. 36 .
Examine pixel (像素) patterns
AI-generated images may exhibit distinct pixel patterns that differ from those found in photographs or hand-drawn images. 37 , showing g excessive detail and precision. Analyzing the pixel patterns can help identify the digital artifacts or repetitive patterns that are commonly associated with AI-generated visuals.
Check abnormal features
AI-generated images often exhibit abnormalities in hands, such as extra fingers. Since hands are less central in images than faces, accurate description poses a challenge for AI. Other things like stretchy wrists in images mean they are probably AI-created. 38 , while others generated by newer AI models are harder to distinguish.
Notice overly perfect textures
Some AI image generators produce textures that are excessively smooth or plastic-looking skin. 39 . Rather than looking like a material that has some wrinkles in it, the images generated by AI models might come out a little too good. So if you want to buy clothes in an online clothes shop, check the given pictures through this detail.
40
Now AI-based image recognition systems are capable of identifying everything in images.AI may struggle to generate realistic backgrounds or context that accurately reflects the real world. With closer inspection of the background or more specific analysis of the accompanying text, which doesn’t fit with the visual content, you may detect these AI-generated pieces.
A. Detect the real world
B. Assess background and context
C. This means that a jacket may appear too nice
D. AI-generated images tend to show imperfect images
E. Some of these errors are easily noticeable to humans
F. They often have an unmistakably artificial appearance
G. But with careful observation, you can spot the differences

Mike is the kind of guy I always admire. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say.
When someone asked him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!” He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Mike would be there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this lifestyle really made me curious, so one day, I went up to Mike and asked him, “I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it ” Mike replied, “Each morning, I wake up and say to myself, ‘You have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.”
“Yeah, right, it’s not that easy,” I protested.
“Yes, it is,” Mike said. “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations and how people affect your mood. The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live your life.”
I reflected on what Mike said. Soon after, I left the company to start my own business. Along the way, my career went through many ups and downs. Gradually, we lost touch with each other, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Later, I suddenly heard that Mike was involved in a serious accident, falling from a tower. Unluckily, he hurt his back. It was after 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care that he was out of danger.

M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.

(Text 10)
M: I’m Nigel. Welcome to Cape Town, South Africa—I can’t wait to show you around. It might be your first time in Africa, so let me clear up some common questions. First, of course, not everyone who lives in Africa has dark skin. This land was explored and populated by groups from Europe centuries ago. After that, it was ever controlled by the Dutch and British. Finally, the British gave South Africa its independence in 1961. I happen to be a mix of all these different racial groups, including Asian and native African. Our history has had tension between different groups, so now we celebrate all groups’ equal treatment by honoring Nelson Mandela. He’s the former national leader who brought us together. We’ll learn more about him in the Nelson Mandela Museum, which is the most significant site in the city. We’ll also explore natural landscapes by hiking Table Mountain, seeing penguins in Simon’s Town, and watching waves crash at the Cape of Good Hope. But first, let’s drop your bags at the booked hotel.

The festival kicked off with an inspiring speech delivered by our headteacher. Eventually, the headteacher presented prizes to the winners.
The activity ensured students a wonderful time, broadening their horizons and helping them gain deeper insights into the meaning of diligence! Many students expressed their expectation for such celebrations of labor next year.

参考范文:
When I visited Mike in the recovery center, I thought he’d be sad. But he was joking with the nurses and smiling big. “Check out my new ‘backpack’,” he said, pointing to his back which was bandaged several layers. With physical therapy causing him pain, he frowned but never complained. Wiping sweat from his brow with a tissue now and then, he glanced at the progress chart on the wall and nodded, “Every time I fall, I’m one step closer to standing up again,” he told me. His strong spirit showed me that choosing to stay positive really mattered
When Mike left hospital, I invited him to have coffee and share my difficulties. He walked in the cafe, slowly but surely. His steps getting firmer with each step. Sunlight streamed through the window, lighting up his bright eyes as he sat down, taking a moment to catch his breath. When I told him about the tough times I had, he listened carefully. “Remember, life is all about choices,” he said, stirring his coffee. “You can let problems beat you or use them to become stronger.” His words made me feel better, and I knew that our choices really shaped our lives.
