第 2单元:UNIT2 Bridging Culture
教 材 地 位 及 作 用 The theme of this unit is cultural exchange,especially through students studying in another culture. Students will read about a Chinese girl who is studying business in England, and they will listen to a radio interview with a Chinese teacher from a Confucius Institute in Pakistan. This knowledge will then be activated by having students talk and write about the experience of students studying abroad.In particular, they will learn how to write an argumentative essay about the pros and cons of studying abroad. Students will then learn how to present their school to foreign students by making a booklet about their school. It is hoped that students can use the information in this unit to consider whether overseas study is right for them, and understand the role of students studying abroad in showcasing China to the rest of the world.
教学目标 1. Enable students to master the usage of some important words and expressions such as qualify, involve, expose and so on. 2. Enable students to master the basic grammar rules about the use of the noun clause. 3. Guide students to learn from Xie Lei’s experience in England and talk about the spread of cross-culture and cross-communication. 4. Let students learn author’s opinion and the structure of an argumentative essay. 5. Instruct students to think of the function of Confucius Institution and spread culture.

Step 1. Watching and discussing (5 minutes) Show a short video clip about interrelationship between culture and language. Ask students a few questions to start the discussion: Q1:What do you see in the video Q2:What comes to your mind when you think of interrelationship between culture and language Step 2: Introduction to the Front Page (10 minutes) Activity 1:Brainstorming Display the front page of Unit 2 on the screen and ask students to observe the subject, the picture, the captions and the quote. Q1:How do you understand this unit’s title “Bridging Culture ” Q2:How do you understand the quote Each culture has its own peculiarities and throws special influence on the language system. Eg: 狗----dog 走狗----running dog In China in most of the cases, “狗” has negative meanings. Activity 2:Sharing Encourage students to share their ideas on cross culture.And can you use some related vocabularies in your expression It can be obviously see that the meaning attributed to language is cultural-specific. A great deal of cross-cultural misunderstanding occurs when the “meanings” of words in two languages are assumed to be the same, but actually reflect different cultural patterns. Step 3: Vocabulary Presentation (15 minutes) Activity 1: How to beckon somebody to come over (1) in the U.S.A. A particular color term may be associated with different things and emotions. Students observe the opening page and try to answer some questions about it. Students work in groups of four to discuss the questions. Students try to use some relevant vocabulary to share their opinions on cross culture. Students try to further grasp the different meanings by understanding different culture .
